The English national curriculum spreads materials content across Year 2, Year 4 and Year 5 instead of teaching it as a single block. In Year 5 the Department for Education lists six properties to compare and group: hardness, solubility, transparency, electrical and thermal conductivity, and response to magnets. The usual question in class is not which material is best in general, but why a particular material suits a particular job, and that answer has to come from the child's own test results.
An object and the material it is made from are not the same thing, since a ruler is an object while wood, steel and plastic are materials. Hardness and transparency can be compared roughly by eye, but solubility, conductivity and magnetic response only become trustworthy when two or more samples are tested side by side under the same conditions. Colour, smell and price are not on the list of six and earn no marks in a classification answer.
A common exercise gives a six-column table and asks pupils to tick each property for plastic, glass, wood, iron, foil and cotton. Before ticking, it helps to write the test for that column in one sentence, because a property with no test attached is usually a property the pupil cannot yet explain.
Scratch tests give a fair comparison only when the same coin, the same pressure and the same surface are used on every sample, and the results are ranked by how deep the groove goes. Transparency is recorded in three levels, with translucent greaseproof paper showing light but no readable detail, and opaque card blocking light completely. A three-column table is far more accurate than a two-column transparent or not-transparent table.
Ranking glass, a coin, a wooden ruler and a plastic ruler with the same steel nail usually puts glass at the hard end and wood at the soft one. Recording the exact pressure and the number of strokes matters more than the word hard, because another class has to be able to repeat the test.
When sugar disappears into warm water it has been split into particles too small to see, yet the total mass of cup, water and sugar stays the same, and evaporating the water brings the sugar back as crystals. Melting is a change of state driven by heat, while dissolving is one substance spreading through another, and warm water both dissolves sugar faster and holds more of it before the liquid becomes saturated.
Salt, sugar and bicarbonate of soda dissolve, while sand, chalk dust and cooking oil do not. Oil shaken into water forms droplets that float back to the top, which is the signature of a mixture that never became a solution, and the two checks are whether the liquid stays uniform and whether anything settles out on standing.
Leaving salt water in a shallow dish for several days lets the water evaporate and leaves small cubic crystals behind, which is the standard way to recover a dissolved solid. Filter paper fails at this job because paper traps undissolved grains such as sand while dissolved salt passes straight through with the liquid. Gentle warming speeds the process up, but the dish should never be heated until dry, since a scorched crystal is no longer the same substance.
The choice of separation method follows from whichever property differs between the parts of the mixture: particle size points to sieving, an undissolved solid in a liquid points to filtering, a dissolved solid points to evaporating, and magnetic material can be lifted out with a magnet. Sand and salt need two stages, dissolving the salt first so that the sand can be filtered off, then evaporating the filtrate to recover the salt.
A three-step example: a mixture of sand, salt and iron filings is separated by lifting the iron out with a magnet, dissolving the salt in water, filtering off the sand, and finally evaporating the filtrate to leave salt crystals. Each step uses one difference in properties, and writing them in that order shows the examiner exactly which property drove which method.
A fair conductivity test uses two spoons with a dab of butter fixed at the same height, both lowered into hot water at the same moment, and the butter that slides off first marks the better conductor. Metal feels cold on a warm hand because heat leaves the skin quickly, which is also why a pan handle is plastic or wood while the pan itself is metal.
In class, butter on a metal spoon usually melts within thirty seconds while wooden and plastic spoons take over a minute, a gap wide enough to see without a thermometer. Taking a reading every minute turns the same observation into numbers that can be quoted in a conclusion.
A tester made from a battery, a bulb and two free wires is enough at this stage: clip the sample into the circuit and note whether the bulb lights, with no resistance calculation needed. Copper and aluminium conduct, plastic and dry wood do not, and the plastic sleeve on a cable exists precisely because the metal inside it does conduct. A dimly lit bulb still counts as conduction, just weaker than copper.
A two-column table of conductors and insulators filled in with pencil lead, rubber, foil, a paper clip, a coin, dry wood and wet wood covers most of the topic in one lesson. Pencil lead makes the bulb glow faintly because graphite conducts, and wet wood works better than dry wood because water helps charged particles move.
Only a small group of metals responds to a magnet, namely iron, steel, nickel and cobalt, while aluminium foil, copper wire and brass screws are ignored by it. Sweeping a magnet over a tray of samples makes a quick first sort, and a second property can then be used to split each pile again. The same handful of metals keeps a compass needle pointing north.
Iron nails, paper clips and steel spoons stick, while foil, copper wire, plastic rulers, glass slides and wood do not. Stainless steel is the awkward case, since some grades barely respond, and noting it in its own column is more honest than forcing it into either pile.
Dissolving, mixing and changes of state can all be undone, because the original substances are still present and physical methods such as evaporating, cooling or lifting with a magnet will bring them back. The test is whether the starting material still exists, not whether the mixture looks different, and a record should name the method used rather than simply stating that the change is reversible.
Burning, rusting and the reaction between bicarbonate of soda and vinegar produce new materials, so no amount of filtering or cooling will restore the wood that has already become ash and smoke. These changes often come with colour shifts, heat, bubbles or a new smell, yet bubbles alone prove nothing, since the fizz in lemonade is just carbon dioxide escaping.
Rusting needs both water and oxygen, so three test tubes of nails kept dry, in water and in salt water show heavy rusting in brine and almost none in the dry tube after a week. The rusty nail also weighs slightly more than it did, since oxygen atoms have joined the iron.
A write-up should state what was changed, what was kept the same and what was measured, because a comparison only means something when one variable moves at a time. Conclusions carry weight when they quote the readings, for example a drop of four degrees in ten minutes, rather than declaring one material the warmest.
A template settles the variables quickly: the factor changed is the type of material, the factors kept constant are the cup, the volume and starting temperature of the water, and the measurement is the temperature every ten minutes. If one of those controls is missing, the result cannot be attributed to the material at all.
Building a table of the six properties and testing ten household objects does more for recall than copying notes. After each test, ask for one sentence explaining a real choice of material, and keep a record of the method used, since the method transfers to the next set of samples.
