Place value is often treated as an easy topic in KS2 maths, yet it carries a large share of the marks in arithmetic and problem solving. The 2014 national curriculum sets it out early. Pupils should read and write numbers up to at least 1,000,000, state what each digit is worth, and partition a number such as 3,456 into 3000 plus 400 plus 50 plus 6. Most lost marks come from three places. A zero inside a number disappears when the number is written in words. A trailing zero after a decimal point is read as if it carried extra value. Rounding is applied to the wrong column. The notes below take each idea in turn.
A digit and its value are two different things. The place is the column it sits in: thousands, hundreds, tens or ones. Its value is what the digit is worth there. The 7 in 4,731 is worth 700, while a 7 on its own is just 7. Read the number from the right, count the column, then multiply. In 2,508 the 5 belongs to the hundreds column, so it stands for 500 and not 5. Pupils who answer too quickly tend to name the digit rather than price it.
Partitioning means writing a number as the sum of its column values. So 47,306 becomes 40,000 plus 7,000 plus 300 plus 6. The empty columns are not written down, but they still hold their seats. The reverse question gives the sum and asks for the number: 50,000 plus 800 plus 20 is 50,820. Errors come from packing the digits too tightly together. Writing 5,082 instead of 50,820 turns a zero column into nothing at all. Line the parts up from the right before combining them.
After the decimal point the columns run tenths, hundredths, thousandths. In 0.4 the 4 sits in the tenths column and is worth four tenths. In 0.04 the same digit sits one column further right, so it is worth four hundredths. The two numbers differ by a factor of ten even though each shows a single digit. Count how many digits follow the point, and you know which column you are looking at. This one habit removes a large number of comparison errors later on.
Multiplying by ten moves every digit one column to the left, and the decimal point appears to move one step right: 3.75 becomes 37.5. Dividing by ten reverses the move, so 37.5 returns to 3.75. Multiplication by 100 shifts two columns, and by 1000 three columns. Adding zeros to a whole number is the same move seen from a distance: 45 times 100 is 4,500, with the 4 travelling from the tens column to the thousands column. When there are not enough digits, write the extra zeros first. Six tenths divided by 100 is 0.006, not 0.06.
Column addition starts by lining the digits up on the right. Take 3,478 plus 2,565. The ones column gives 8 plus 5, which is 13, so write 3 and carry 1. The tens column gives 7 plus 6 plus 1, which is 14, so write 4 and carry 1. The hundreds column gives 4 plus 5 plus 1, which is 10, so write 0 and carry 1. The thousands column gives 3 plus 2 plus 1, which is 6, and the answer is 6,043. Subtraction borrows in the same spirit. In 5,002 minus 1,468 the ones column cannot take 8 from 2, and because the tens digit is 0 the borrow has to travel from the thousands column. The slip to watch for is forgetting to reduce the column you borrowed from.
When adding 12.5 and 3.75, line the decimal points up one above the other and fill the missing place with a zero, so the sum becomes 12.50 plus 3.75. Work through it like a whole-number column sum, and the answer is 16.25. Lining the numbers up on the right instead mixes tenths with hundredths and gives a wrong total. The decimal point in the answer drops straight down into the same column. A quick estimate catches the rest: 12 plus 3 is about 15, so 16.25 is sensible, while an answer of 1.625 means the point has moved.
Compare the whole number part first, then work along the columns from left to right. 0.7 is larger than 0.65 because the tenths digit 7 beats 6, and the number of decimal places plays no part in the decision. Appending a zero to make 0.70 changes how the number looks, not what it is worth. Whole numbers follow the same logic. More digits usually means a larger number, but with equal length you start at the highest column. That is why 5,099 is smaller than 5,190, even though both begin with a 5.
The symbols for greater than and less than always open towards the larger number and point at the smaller one. So 5 greater than 3 uses the wide end on the left, and 3 less than 5 puts the point on the left instead. Pupils mix the two up constantly. One fix is to treat the symbol as a mouth that opens towards the bigger helping. Negative numbers need care: minus 7 is less than minus 2, because minus 7 sits further left, even though 7 itself is larger than 2. Read the sentence back when you finish. If it sounds wrong, the symbol is the wrong way round.
Rounding starts with a decision about which column you keep. Only the digit immediately to the right of that column matters: below 5 it disappears, 5 or above it pushes the kept column up by one. Take 6,482. To the nearest hundred the tens digit 8 forces 6,500. To the nearest ten the ones digit 2 leaves 6,480. Decimals behave the same way, so 3.146 to two decimal places looks at the 6 and becomes 3.15. The usual slip is checking two columns instead of one, or adding the carry to the digit that was dropped.
Negative numbers appear late in KS2, mostly as reading and positioning tasks on a number line. Minus 3 means three steps to the left of zero. It is smaller than minus 1 because it sits further left. On a number line whatever is further right is always greater, and that single rule settles most comparison questions. Temperature makes the idea concrete: minus 3 degrees is colder than minus 1 degree. The common slip is to compare 3 with 1 and then carry the answer across with the minus sign still attached.
Number line questions usually show a stretch of scale and ask you to read off an arrow. Count how many equal gaps sit between two labelled points, then divide the difference by the number of gaps. If 0 to 1 is split into ten gaps, each gap is 0.1, and an arrow on the seventh mark reads 0.7. When the scale looks uneven, do not guess: take the two labelled ends, subtract, and divide. Counting marks instead of gaps is the usual error, since ten gaps involve eleven marks and the answer shifts by 0.1.
Roman numerals use five symbols in this range: I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100. Read left to right. A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, so IX is 9, while the same pair reversed adds up: XI is 11. No symbol repeats more than three times, which is why 4 is written IV and not IIII. Two misreadings account for most lost marks here: taking IV as 6, and reading XL as 60 when it means 40.
A zero holds a column open. It adds nothing to the value itself, but without it every column to its left lands in the wrong place. Turning 50,820 into 5,082 is the same fault as writing 4,05 for four thousand and five. A zero at the end of a decimal is often treated as extra value instead, so 2.50 is judged bigger than 2.5 when the two are equal. Rounding through a chain of nines is subtler: 9,960 to the nearest hundred is 10,000, not 9,900. Write the answer with the columns lined up, then read it back from the right.
Place value is not only a topic of its own. It is the tool behind mental arithmetic. To add 398 and 405, treat 398 as 400 minus 2 and the answer is 803. To multiply 25 by 16, split it into 25 times 10 plus 25 times 6, which gives 250 plus 150, so 400. Estimation leans on the same idea. For 4,912 plus 3,087 the sensible estimate is 5,000 plus 3,000, and 8,000 is close enough when the question only asks for an approximate answer. Working through the columns keeps the numbers small and the errors visible.
