AQA GCSE Economics
Paper 1 How markets work 与 Paper 2 How the economy works
AQA's GCSE Economics is specification 8136, and it is linear, so both papers are sat at the end of the course in the same series. How markets work and How the economy works are deliberately symmetrical: each runs for 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 80 marks and counts for 50 per cent of the qualification, with content 1 to 6 feeding Paper 1 and content 7 to 11 feeding Paper 2. The detail that matters sits in the wording of the assessment grid, because either paper may draw on the whole course: a Paper 1 case study can test inflation and a Paper 2 calculation can test elasticity. Revision that keeps the two halves in sealed boxes tends to stall on those synoptic questions.
10 multiple choice questions followed by a range of calculation, short and extended response questions。
Ten multiple-choice items worth one mark each open the paper, and the specification pairs them with calculation, short and extended response questions in the same section. Two of the four options can usually be dismissed on general knowledge, leaving a real choice between the two that differ by one technical word, such as a shift of the demand curve rather than a movement along it. Little writing is needed and eight minutes is already a generous ceiling for the block, yet the negative stem still catches candidates who misread which factor is not a determinant of demand; a blank answer earns nothing, whereas a considered guess carries a one-in-four chance.
Section B
Section B 是五道大题,官方写法是 five questions involving a mix of calculations, short and extended responses。
Section B hands candidates five questions that mix calculations with short and extended responses, usually anchored to a case study printed with the paper. The tariff climbs from two-mark definitions through four-mark explanations to nine-mark evaluations, and a workable shape is judgement first, then support from the data or a diagram, then one qualification of that judgement. Examiners see far more marks lost to thin evaluation than to shaky theory, since a nine-mark question answered in three lines cannot reach the top band; numbers in the case study are there to be quoted, and ignoring a stated 12 per cent rise wastes the material.
Equilibrium price is where the two curves cross, and the examinable skill is predicting how that crossing point moves. A rise in demand shifts the curve right, lifting price and quantity together, while a rise in supply shifts the other curve right, so price falls as quantity rises. The distinction that decides the marks is between a movement along a curve, caused by a change in the good's own price, and a shift, caused by anything else: income, tastes, substitute prices and expectations sit on the demand side, costs, technology, taxes and subsidies on the supply side. Candidates blur demand rising with quantity demanded rising and lose half the marks, and unlabelled sketches rarely earn credit either, which is why axes and a marked equilibrium point belong on every diagram.
Price elasticity of demand is one of the few places in Paper 1 where a formula has to be recalled and then interpreted. Divide the percentage change in quantity demanded by the percentage change in price, take the absolute value, and anything above one is elastic while anything below one is inelastic. Three steps usually carry the marks: the calculation, the label and the revenue consequence, because a price cut raises total revenue only when demand is elastic; case studies dress this up as a firm wondering whether to discount. Working matters too, since method marks and answer marks are awarded separately, and unit elasticity makes a neat counter-example where revenue stays flat as price moves.
The foundations chapter looks like common sense and still costs marks. Land, labour, capital and enterprise are the four factors of production, rewarded by rent, wages, interest and profit respectively, and opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone rather than the sum of everything given up. The three decisions at the heart of the subject are what to produce, how to produce it and who gets the output. Capital means plant, machinery and equipment in this specification rather than money, and treating turnover as profit is another recurring slip that loses definition marks.
Costs, revenue and profit questions are mostly arithmetic wearing a business context. Total cost is fixed plus variable cost, average cost divides that total by output, and profit subtracts total cost from total revenue; a typical item supplies a small table, asks for two missing cells and then for an explanation of falling average cost. Push output past capacity and average cost turns upward as coordination gets harder and machinery is overstretched, and that reversal is what separates a solid evaluation from a list. Units deserve a glance before moving on, because a table in thousands of pounds answered in pounds can void the whole question.
Market failure means the price mechanism failing to allocate resources efficiently, and the specification puts most weight on externalities. An externality is the gap between social and private cost or benefit, so a negative externality means social cost exceeds private cost, with factory pollution as the standard illustration; policy instruments include taxes, subsidies, regulation and property rights, and a strong answer names the curve each one moves. Saying the government should do something earns little, because marks attach to the mechanism rather than the sentiment, and a closing qualification helps too, since a tax set too high can push production, and the emissions, offshore.
Paper 2 opens with the objectives a government pursues. The specification names full employment, price stability, economic growth and a balanced balance of payments, then adds reducing inequality and managing environmental change as further aims, and for each one three things are examinable: how it is measured, what causes it, and who bears the consequences. Conflicts carry a lot of marks, since policies that push growth can lift inflation while tightening to cool prices can raise unemployment. Unemployment needs its four types separated, structural, seasonal, frictional and cyclical, because a vague reference to hard times rarely scores beyond the first band, and inflation needs cost-push distinguished from demand-pull, with the CPI as the measure the specification names.
The toolkit splits into three parts: fiscal policy works through government spending and taxation, monetary policy through interest rates, and supply-side policy through productivity and market efficiency. Fiscal expansion raises aggregate demand directly, while the tax needed to fund it can crowd out some private spending, and in the UK framework the Bank of England sets the policy rate, which feeds into saving, borrowing and investment decisions. Supply-side measures are slow acting but they are the route that can ease inflation while raising output, so naming the instrument, the target and the transmission chain earns more than five policy labels.
Section 6 of the specification deals with quantitative skills on its own, and it states that at least 10 per cent of the total marks reward quantitative work at or above Key Stage 3 standard. The list is modest: percentages and percentage changes, average cost, totals for revenue and profit, gross and net pay, drawing supply and demand curves from data, and reading charts to justify a decision, with simple work on CPI figures and GDP per capita alongside the difference between nominal and real GDP. Candidates often treat these marks as free, then trip over the base of a percentage change, because a move from 80 to 100 is a 25 per cent rise rather than 20, and one revision session on bases is worth ten more practice questions of the same type.
A word on habits, because 1 hour 45 minutes for 80 marks works out at roughly 1.3 minutes per mark and the tariff is far from even. Ten multiple-choice items plus short answers may account for only a quarter of the paper, while a single evaluation question can be worth nine marks, so timing should follow the marks rather than the page order: budget about a minute per mark and protect a full 15 minutes for the final extended answer. Round sensibly, attach units, percentages and currency symbols, and keep five minutes at the end for checking calculations, especially the base of a percentage change.
