Thirty days sits in an awkward middle: long enough that panic alone will not carry you through, short enough that re-teaching a whole year is out of reach. What separates two students with the same number of hours is rarely effort; it is whether the month follows a fixed rhythm and whether each practice paper leaves behind a record you can act on. The sequence below follows what exam boards publish in their specifications and what JCQ requires in the exam room. Use it as a template, then adjust the numbers to your own papers.
The first move is not opening a textbook, it is sitting one full past paper under official timing before any revision happens. Many students save papers until they feel ready, which sounds disciplined but leaves the order of revision to guesswork. Mark it question by question and sort every lost mark into three buckets: content not understood, content understood but lost to slips or incomplete working, and questions never reached because the clock ran out. Each bucket needs a different repair, and blending them is how a month quietly disappears.
Set daily volume from marks rather than from how you feel. On a ninety minute paper worth eighty marks, one mark is worth a little over a minute, so a forty five minute practice block covers roughly forty marks of material. Splitting the month this way is far more reliable than working through chapters in order, because the exam only rewards what you produce inside the time allowed. A common mistake is doing ten short questions a day while never once sitting a full section under timed conditions.
A practical split is seven days of diagnosis, sixteen days of targeted repair, and seven days of full papers. The diagnostic week exists to find the three or four most expensive topics, judged by marks lost rather than by which chapter felt hardest. During the repair block, each topic gets twenty minutes of concept review and forty minutes of same-type questions, marked immediately with the error annotated while the reasoning is still fresh. In the final week nothing new is learned: full papers under real conditions, marking, then redoing the questions that failed.
When you revisit material matters more than how often. A short self-test the same day, a second look two days later, one mixed question a week on, and a place inside a full paper a fortnight on will hold a topic far longer than nightly rereading. Rereading notes mostly produces familiarity, which is not the same as being able to reproduce the argument on a blank page. Put these reviews in a calendar, because retrieval is the part of a revision plan that quietly collapses first.
Keep only three things per entry: the key conditions of the question, the category of the error, and a date to redo it. Copying out whole questions is the most common waste of time in a revision month, since the transcription costs as much as solving a similar item. Errors should be written as concrete actions rather than as carelessness: a missing unit conversion, reading increase as decrease, a sign dropped on the second line. By the end of the month the log is short enough to read in the last hour before an exam.
Halfway through the month, go back to the board's official specification and check your notes against the numbered statements. Edexcel, AQA, OCR and CAIE all publish content as numbered points, and mark schemes award marks along those same lines, so a missing statement in your notes usually becomes a missing mark on the paper. Read the explanatory sentences under each heading, not just the heading itself, because that is where the difference between describe and explain is spelled out. Two hours spent here removes two weeks of unfocused practice.
Numerical and essay questions cannot be reviewed the same way. With calculations, audit the chain from formula choice through substitution and units to the final significant figure, because method marks are both easier to earn and easier to lose than the answer itself. With essay answers, audit structure instead: whether each paragraph states a judgement, supports it with evidence, and returns to the wording of the question. Reading the mark scheme bands and rewriting one paragraph into the next band up is worth more than adding length.
Exam room rules are reissued by JCQ each year, and the Instructions for conducting examinations for 2026-2027 contain two clauses students forget. A candidate arriving more than one hour after the published start time cannot be admitted and is handled after the session, with no extra time granted; arriving within that hour means entry but the same finishing time. The prohibited items list covers smart watches and programmable calculators as well as phones, and a phone left switched off on the desk still counts as malpractice. Access arrangements such as extra time must be applied for by the centre well in advance, never on the day.
Stop learning new content in the last three days. Fresh material is unlikely to stick within seventy two hours and tends to displace work that was already secure. Two actions are enough: work through the error log with each entry covered and redone, and sit one paper under real timing to keep the rhythm, marking it without chasing new question types. Keep your usual sleep schedule, because the attention lost the next morning costs more than an extra paper set ever returns.
