The nineteenth-century novel is Section B of AQA Paper 1, and it is the part of the exam where marks swing most widely between candidates. You get a short extract and two bullet points: one asks for close reading of the printed passage, the other asks you to reach beyond it into the whole text. Strong students often do the first well and then fall back on retelling the plot. Everything below follows the structure set out in the AQA specification 8702, together with the historical material that examiners reward under AO3.

Paper 1

AQA specification 8702 sets Paper 1 at one hour and forty-five minutes, 64 marks and 40 per cent of the qualification. Shakespeare fills Section A and the nineteenth-century novel fills Section B, where one question carries 30 marks with a further four for accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. Those four marks have no task of their own: they ride on how controlled the whole response is, which is why candidates who keep two minutes to proofread so often pick them up.

The question prints an extract, usually somewhere between 25 and 40 lines, and then sets two tasks. The first stays inside the extract and asks how a character or a theme is presented there; the second pushes out into the novel as a whole and asks how the same idea develops across the text. Marking uses one band for both tasks rather than splitting the 30 marks, so a response that reads as two disconnected mini-essays tends to sit in the middle. A single sentence at the end of the extract work that points forward gives the second half somewhere to stand.

The 30 marks split into AO1 at twelve, AO2 at twelve and AO3 at six under the AQA mark scheme. AO1 rewards a line of argument that is genuinely yours and that is carried by evidence from the text, while AO2 rewards analysis of language, form and structure rather than a labelled list of techniques. Naming a simile earns nothing by itself: the mark comes from what the comparison does to a reader at that point in the novel. AO3's six marks are reserved for context attached to particular words rather than parked in a paragraph of its own.

Context is where weaker answers drift. The mark scheme asks for context that illuminates the text, not a paragraph of general nineteenth-century history, so a reference to Dickens speaking in Manchester in 1843 only scores when it is tied to the way Scrooge talks about the poor. A note on the position of the governess lands when it explains the unease Jane feels inside Thornfield, and fails when it sits alone. One test works well: remove the contextual sentence and see whether the analysis of the quotation becomes thinner.

Point of view does a lot of quiet work in these novels and it is one of the fastest routes into AO2. Jane Eyre is narrated by an older Jane looking back, so the voice already knows how things end, and Great Expectations puts Pip in the same retrospective position with a strong streak of self-mockery. Pride and Prejudice stays in the third person but sits close to Elizabeth's mind, which lets the reader misjudge Darcy alongside her. Jekyll and Hyde hands the story to three narrators in turn, and every handover changes how much is allowed to be known.

Gothic writing runs on a recognisable set of signals, and spotting them is more useful than memorising labels. Weather and light track the psychology of the characters, so storms tend to break just before a decision, and enclosed spaces keep pressing people against walls, corridors and locked doors. The body becomes a second battleground, with pallor, breathing and trembling standing in for feeling. Frankenstein nests its narratives inside Walton's Arctic letters, so the creature's account sits at the centre and carries the most authority.

A Christmas Carol came out in 1843 in five staves, and the musical word is deliberate, since Dickens borrowed the shape of a score to organise time. Marley's ghost delivers the warning, then three spirits take Scrooge through past, present and future in that order. The sequence matters because the past explains how he became this man while the future shows him where it ends, so causation arrives before fear. An answer that says which stave carries the cause and which carries the pressure reads very differently from one that calls the three visits a list.

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act pushed relief into the workhouse and made conditions deliberately worse than the poorest job outside, a principle known as less eligibility. Industrial cities were expanding at the same time, and factory legislation from 1833 onwards gradually cut the hours children could work, with the Ten Hours Act of 1847 limiting women and young people to ten hours a day. Novels rarely name these statutes, but the situations of their characters track them closely. Magwitch in Great Expectations is transported to Australia, a punishment Britain only abandoned in 1868.

Before 1870 a married woman's property belonged to her husband in law, a doctrine called coverture, and the Married Women's Property Acts of 1870 and 1882 slowly changed what a wife could keep of her own earnings and inheritance. In Jane Eyre the legal weight of marriage is visible in Bertha, because Rochester cannot simply remarry when the law refuses to recognise his first marriage as finished. Pride and Prejudice turns on an entail that keeps the Bennet estate away from five daughters, so the future of the family hangs on a legal technicality rather than on anyone's character.

Darwin's On the Origin of Species appeared in 1859 and blurred the line between human beings and animals, which took away ground from religious explanations that had felt secure. Geology had already stretched the age of the earth far beyond human history, and Lyell's work made deep time ordinary reading. Frankenstein reaches back to 1818 and to contemporary experiments with electricity and life, the world of Galvani and Aldini. Jekyll and Hyde arrives in 1886 alongside degeneration theory, when Lombroso was arguing that criminality could be read off the body.

The exam is closed book, which means quotations have to come out of memory. A workable method is eight to ten short quotations per text, each about five words long, because short fragments slot into a sentence and survive the pressure of the hall. Attach the chapter or stave and the speaker to each one, so the quotation can be placed rather than merely quoted. Long passages are the usual trap: candidates half-remember the opening, lose the rest, and the analysis collapses with it.

Three losses recur in scripts, and none of them is about knowing less content. The first is retelling, where the extract gets summarised and nothing is analysed. The second is context that never meets a quotation, where historical material is accurate but floats free of the words on the page. The third is a missing judgement, an answer that describes the text for a page without ever saying what it thinks. AQA frames AO1 as a response with a critical style, so an answer that never evaluates tends to stall in the middle bands.
