Spelling at key stage 2 is not a memory test. Once children can identify a syllable type, recognise a suffix and hear where the stress falls, most unfamiliar words become predictable; the rules in the English programmes of study are arranged year by year for exactly that reason, and the key stage 2 spelling paper tests them through dictation rather than through recognition. What follows takes each rule in turn, adds the word forms children most often get wrong, and ends with a practice routine that fits into a normal school evening.
A closed syllable keeps its vowel short, as in hop, plan and kit, while adding a silent e opens the syllable and lets the vowel say its own name in hope, plane and kite; the same contrast appears in bit and bite, not and note, cut and cute. Because the pattern is about sound, children who read the word aloud before writing it usually choose the right ending, dropping the e in hoping and doubling the consonant in hopping. Dictation errors here are rarely random: a child who writes hopping for hoping has heard the vowel correctly but applied the doubling rule too widely, and one who writes hopeing has not yet linked the silent e to the long vowel. Paired practice, reading both words of a pair side by side, fixes the confusion faster than a list of single words.
All three endings sound identical, so the spelling has to be decided from the base word rather than from the sound. Verbs ending in -ct and -ss almost always take -tion, which covers action, invention and possession, while bases ending in -de, -se or -mit shift to -sion, giving decision, division, admission, tension, conclusion and expansion; words for people and trades keep the c of the base and take -cian, as in musician, magician and electrician. A quick test that works in class is to write the verb first and then attach the ending, since children who start from the noun often pick the ending that looks familiar instead of the one the base requires.
Doubling follows the stress, not the length of the word. A one-syllable word ending in consonant-vowel-consonant doubles before a vowel suffix, so hop becomes hopped and big becomes bigger, and a longer word doubles only when its final syllable carries the stress, which is why admitted, beginning and preferred take two consonants while visited, opened and entered take one. Words ending in w, x or y never double, giving snowed, fixed and played. Marking the stress on the base word before adding the ending is the habit that removes the guesswork, and it also settles the focused and focussed question, where British usage now prefers the single consonant; adjectives ending in -ic add -ally, which is why basically and specifically keep both the c and the extra a.
动词里另有三组高频特例:have 变 has,do 变 does,go 变 goes。学生常把 potato 写成 potatos,这一组只能按词记,规则帮不上忙。
Plurals and third-person verbs share one pattern: add -s by default, add -es after s, x, z, ch and sh, and turn a consonant plus y into ies while leaving a vowel plus y untouched, so carry becomes carries but play becomes plays. The exceptions are concentrated in two groups, with f and fe words splitting between leaves and knives on one side and roofs and chiefs on the other, and o words splitting between potatoes and heroes on one side and photos and pianos on the other. The three high-frequency verbs have, do and go take has, does and goes, which are worth learning as whole words. Those groups are worth a short list of their own, because the rule genuinely does not decide them and children who expect it to will keep writing potatos.
五、否定前缀 in- 按首字母变形
否定前缀 in- 会跟着后面词的首字母变形。p、b、m 前写 im-:impossible、imbalance、immature、immortal。l 前写 il-:illegal、illogical、illustrate。r 前写 ir-:irregular、irrelevant、irresponsible。其余情况保留 in-:inactive、incorrect、invisible、insecure。加 -ly 变副词时也照着来:possibly、legally、regularly。同一条逻辑也解释了为什么 un- 从不变形:unhappy、unfair、unusual、unable,前面接什么字母都是 un-。常见的错误是写成 inpossible 或 unregular,因为 /ɪm/ 和 /ɪn/ 在连读时几乎听不出区别。判断时看词根的第一个字母,不要靠听,看得见的字母比听不清的音可靠。
The negative prefix in- reshapes itself to match the letter that follows: im- before p, b and m, il- before l, ir- before r, and plain in- everywhere else, giving impossible, illegal, irregular and inactive from the same starting point. The change is purely about pronunciation, since the prefix carries the same negative meaning in every form, and the same adjustment shows up in the adverbs possibly, legally and regularly. By contrast, un- never changes shape, so unhappy, unfair and unusual all keep it intact whatever letter comes next. The reliable method is to look at the first letter of the base word rather than to listen, because the final consonant of the prefix is almost inaudible in speech and children who trust their ear will write inpossible with complete confidence.
六、同音词与不发音字母的词族
同音词要看语法位置,不能靠读音区分。their 后面接名词,表示所属;there 表示地点,或用在 there is 结构里;they're 是 they are 的缩写。your 与 you're、its 与 it's 同理。考试里常见的另有 hear 与 here、weather 与 whether、piece 与 peace,判断方法一样,看它在句子里充当什么成分。英式拼写里 practice 是名词,practise 是动词,advice 是名词,advise 是动词。不发音字母集中在固定的词族:kn- 开头的 know、knee、knock、knife;wr- 开头的 write、wrong、wrist;词尾 -mb 的 climb、thumb、comb、lamb;-stle 结尾的 castle、whistle、listen。很多学生以为这些是不规则的例外,其实同一个词族内部高度一致,按词族记比按单个词记快得多。
Homophones are settled by grammar, not by sound: their marks possession, there marks place or introduces a clause, and they're shortens they are, with the same test separating your from you're and its from it's. Hear and here, weather and whether, piece and peace follow the same logic, since each pair differs only in the job the word does in the sentence. British spelling adds a further pair, since practice is the noun and practise the verb, exactly as advice and advise divide. Silent letters are far less irregular than they look, clustering into families such as kn- in know and knee, wr- in write and wrist, a final b in climb and thumb, and -stle in castle and whistle, so learning five families covers dozens of words and stops the letter-by-letter memorising that fails under exam pressure.
The English programmes of study published by the Department for Education in 2014 list spelling rules and statutory word lists year by year, with separate lists for years 3 and 4 and for years 5 and 6, and the expectation at the end of key stage 2 is accurate spelling of those words together with confident use of the rules on unfamiliar vocabulary. The key stage 2 grammar, punctuation and spelling test has two papers, the second being a twenty-word dictation drawn from that material, and because a mark is given only for a fully correct spelling, a single wrong letter loses the whole word.
八、英式拼写与美式拼写的分叉
英式与美式拼写的差异在 KS2 到 KS3 之间会反复出现。英式拼写保留 -our:colour、favour、behaviour;美式写 -or。英式用 -re 结尾:centre、metre、theatre;美式写 -er。动词后缀英式多用 -ise:organise、realise、recognise,美式多用 -ize,牛津拼法在英式里也接受 -ize,跟着学校课本走最稳。过去式与过去分词英式双写 l:travelled、cancelled、modelled,美式不双写。英国卷子按英式拼写评分,同一个词不要两种写法混用。拼写检查工具默认可能是美式,改完要自己再看一遍,机器标绿不等于考官给分。
British and American spellings diverge in a few predictable places: British keeps the u in colour, favour and behaviour, prefers -re in centre, metre and theatre, and doubles the l in travelled, cancelled and modelled, while American English drops the u, uses -er and writes traveled. Verbs ending in -ise or -ize are a further split, with organise and realise standard in British usage and organize and realize standard in American, although Oxford spelling accepts the z form in British English as well. British exam papers mark British spellings, so a word processor set to American English will flag correct answers; switching the dictionary or checking by eye before submission avoids losing marks for a spelling the examiner would accept.
Short dictation cycles beat copying a word twenty times, and six to eight words a day is enough when the child names the rule before writing. Wrong words go back into the next day's list, grouped by rule rather than by lesson, so that a week of -sion mistakes shows whether the pattern is missing or a single word is stubborn. Any unfamiliar word met during reading can be marked with the rule it belongs to instead of being memorised on the spot, and a weekly review will then show which rules keep coming back. Asking for an explanation of the rule afterwards, instead of supplying the correct spelling, keeps the check inside the child's own head and turns a correction into something they can reuse on the next unfamiliar word.
