AQA GCSE
German history between 1890 and 1945 falls into two halves, and the exam asks you to explain the hinge between them. Paper 1A/B runs for one hour, carries 40 marks and offers six questions built from two interpretations and your own knowledge. Candidates who memorise dates usually stall at the eight and twelve mark questions, because those marks reward explained consequences rather than a list of events. The specification is published on the AQA website, and every question on the paper is drawn from its three parts.
The 1871 constitution gave every man over 25 a vote, which makes the Empire look much more democratic than it actually was. Ministers answered to the Kaiser alone, the army swore loyalty to him in person, and the Reichstag could block money but never appoint a government. Prussia's veto in the Bundesrat left the smaller states with little influence, while the Social Democrats became the largest party in 1912 without ever holding office.
By the fourth year of the war the home front was failing faster than the army. The British blockade cut food and fertiliser imports, and the turnip winter of 1916 to 1917 replaced potatoes with fodder crops. Strikes multiplied from 1917, the spring offensive of 1918 ran out of men and supplies, and the naval mutiny at Kiel at the end of October spread to Berlin within days. The Kaiser abdicated on 9 November 1918 and the armistice was signed two days later by civilian ministers, a detail the right later turned into the stab in the back myth.
The Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919 without German negotiation, and Article 231 pinned war guilt on Germany. The army was cut to 100,000 men, conscription and an air force were banned, and the Rhineland was demilitarised. Reparations were fixed in 1921 at 132 billion gold marks, a figure that made every later budget a political fight. Signing was the only alternative to invasion, yet the men who signed were branded November criminals and the charge stuck for a generation.
From 1919 to 1923 both extremes tried to destroy the republic. The Spartacist rising was crushed by the Freikorps in January 1919, the Kapp Putsch collapsed only through a general strike in March 1920, and the occupation of the Ruhr in January 1923 triggered a printing press spiral. By autumn a loaf cost billions of marks and middle class savings vanished, while Hitler's Munich Putsch failed in two days yet gave him a national stage. The rentenmark ended the inflation but not the resentment it left behind.
Stresemann was chancellor for three months in 1923 and foreign minister until his death in 1929, and his method was to stabilise the currency first and buy room abroad second. The Dawes Plan of 1924 rescheduled reparations and pulled American loans into German banks, Locarno in 1925 accepted the western borders, and entry into the League of Nations followed in 1926. Recovery rested on short term loans that could be recalled at any moment, while coalition governments rarely lasted two years and Article 48 sat unused but ready.
The Wall Street crash of October 1929 pulled American loans out of Germany and industrial output collapsed through 1930. Registered unemployment reached six million by early 1932, and the Nazi vote tracked the curve almost exactly, rising from 2.6 per cent in 1928 to 37.3 per cent in July 1932. Hitler sold certainty rather than policy detail, pairing anti Versailles rhetoric with anti communism and a promise to end parliamentary squabbling, while the SA grew to roughly 400,000 and turned the streets into a campaign.
After 1930 no stable majority existed in the Reichstag, so governments were appointed by the president and ruled through emergency decrees. Bruning's austerity deepened the slump until he was dismissed in 1932, Papen's cabinet of aristocrats had almost no parliamentary support, and Schleicher lasted less than two months. On 30 January 1933 Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor in a cabinet where the Nazis held only three posts, a concession the conservative elite believed it could reverse.
The Reichstag fire on 27 February 1933 gave the government its pretext, and the decree of the following day suspended freedom of speech, assembly and the press. In the election of 5 March the Nazis took 43.9 per cent, enough only with their nationalist partners, and the Enabling Act passed on 23 March by 444 votes to 94. Trade unions were seized on 2 May and new parties banned in July, so legal form and terror worked together rather than in sequence.
By 1934 the SA had over two million members and Rohm wanted it merged into the army, a demand the generals and industrialists would not accept. Between 30 June and 2 July 1934 the SS killed Rohm, Schleicher and a range of old enemies, and the Reichstag later endorsed the killings as state defence. When Hindenburg died on 2 August 1934 Hitler merged the presidency with the chancellorship, and the army oath was rewritten to pledge loyalty to him personally.
Nazi economic success has to be read on two levels. Public works, conscription from 1935 and the Reich Labour Service absorbed young men, while the Four Year Plan of 1936 put Goering in charge of rearmament and autarky. Registered unemployment fell from six million to around 1.6 million by 1936, but women, Jews and conscripts were pushed out of the count, real wages stayed below 1929 levels and workers lost the right to change jobs freely.
Nazi social policy pushed women back towards the home through the slogan of children, kitchen and church, backed by marriage loans in 1933 and the Mother's Cross from 1938. The Hitler Youth grew from a few thousand in 1926 to around eight million by the late 1930s and became compulsory in 1939, while schools rewrote history and race studies and teachers were required to join the Nazi teachers' league. The churches were never fully controlled, since the Confessing Church of 1934 and the 1937 encyclical kept a public critique alive despite arrests.
Persecution moved in stages. The boycott of Jewish shops on 1 April 1933 was followed by the civil service law that same month, and the Nuremberg Laws of September 1935 stripped Jewish Germans of citizenship and banned intermarriage. Kristallnacht on 9 and 10 November 1938 destroyed over seven hundred shops, killed about a hundred people and sent thirty thousand men to camps, and after 1939 ghettos, mobile killing units and the Wannsee Conference of January 1942 turned persecution into an administrative process.
Goebbels ran the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda from March 1933 and brought press, radio, film and theatre under the Reich Chamber of Culture. Repression rested on the SS, the Gestapo and the camps, where Himmler's takeover of the Gestapo in 1934 removed arrests from the courts. Resistance was small but real, from the White Rose leaflets of 1942 and 1943 to the Edelweiss Pirates and the bomb planted by Stauffenberg on 20 July 1944, which wounded Hitler and cost thousands of lives in reprisal.
The paper is predictable in shape: four marks, four marks, eight marks, four marks, eight marks, twelve marks, with four of the final twelve reserved for spelling, punctuation and grammar. The two opening questions want a difference and a reason, so one sentence per point is enough and a full paragraph wastes time. The convincing question needs both interpretations plus contextual knowledge, the describe question rewards four separate points, the how did it affect question needs two or three causal chains, and the final judgement question fails without both sides argued first.
