England's primary science curriculum has two strands. One is the subject content: plants, materials, forces, Earth and space. The other is a short section called Working Scientifically, which teachers are expected to weave into every science lesson rather than teach as a separate unit. The distinction matters at home, because a child who can recite that ice melts is not yet doing what the programme of study asks for; the asking, the testing and the checking are the parts being assessed.
The DfE programme of study for key stages 1 and 2 gives Working Scientifically its own statutory requirements instead of folding it into the content list; by the end of key stage 2, pupils should use different types of scientific enquiry to answer relevant questions and seek answers by collecting, analysing and presenting data. The wording avoids a fixed recipe and instead lists observable behaviours by year group, such as asking relevant questions, making systematic observations, and using results to plan the next test. The same document notes that these skills develop further at key stages 3 and 4, once pupils know enough science to discuss experimental design and the control of variables meaningfully, which is why primary work stops short of statistical tests.
KS2 的探究分成五类:观察随时间的变化(observing over time)、寻找规律(pattern seeking)、识别分类与分组(identifying, classifying and grouping)、比较与公平测试(comparative and fair testing)、查阅二手资料(researching using secondary sources)。
Primary enquiries fall into five families: observing over time, pattern seeking, identifying and classifying, comparative and fair testing, and research using secondary sources. The question chooses the family; how a seedling changes over a month calls for repeated observation, which paper towel holds most water calls for a fair test, and why polar bears are white needs a trustworthy secondary source because no classroom experiment can settle it. Plenty of primary investigations fail at this first step, before any equipment comes out, simply because the method does not match the question.
Children usually arrive with why questions, and why questions are rarely testable as they stand; why does ice melt becomes which melts completely first, the ice by the radiator or the ice on the windowsill. A usable question names the two things being compared, states what will be measured and fixes the conditions, including cube size and water temperature. The programme of study calls these relevant questions, meaning the question and the method fit together, and investigate plant growth is the classic unhelpful version because a month of records can neither support nor contradict it.
Years 5 和 6 的课程要求里有一个明确的说法:planning different types of scientific enquiries, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary。
For years 5 and 6 the wording explicitly includes recognising and controlling variables where necessary, which classrooms usually reduce to three headings: change, measure, keep the same. One condition varies, one outcome is measured and everything else is held constant, so that a comparison has only one plausible explanation; testing whether warm water dissolves sugar faster therefore needs fixed water volume, fixed sugar mass and a fixed stirring method. The conceptual part is easy for most ten year olds, while the operational part is where investigations collapse, since one pair starts the timer as the sugar goes in and another after stirring.
Upper key stage 2 asks for measurements with increasing accuracy and precision, using a range of equipment that includes thermometers and data loggers, with repeat readings where appropriate. Three habits carry most of the weight: check the range of an instrument before choosing it, read scales at eye level, and measure the same quantity at least twice. Range errors are common and quiet, since a laboratory thermometer pushed into a flame simply reports its own limit and the number looks like evidence, and repeating a reading teaches that the same quantity measured twice rarely gives an identical value.
Recording formats are listed by year group, with simple scientific language, labelled diagrams, keys, bar charts and tables in years 3 and 4, and scatter graphs and line graphs added in years 5 and 6 alongside conclusions, causal relationships and a judgement about the degree of trust in the results. Graph choice follows the data type rather than personal taste: categories compared side by side belong in a bar chart, a quantity changing continuously belongs on a line graph, and two measured variables belong on a scatter graph. A line drawn through apple, banana and orange invents a trend that does not exist, which is one of the most frequent errors in primary recording.
A workable key stage 2 conclusion has three parts: what was measured, which claim the data supports, and what remains uncertain, and the third part is the one children skip. The phrase about the degree of trust asks for a reason to believe the result, such as three repeat readings, controlled water volume, or one reading that clearly sits apart from the rest. Correlation and causation need no technical vocabulary at this age, only a clear example: ice cream sales and drowning deaths rise together because warm weather drives both.
The same document states that Working Scientifically continues into key stages 3 and 4, where the actions keep their shape but change their names: control variables replace keep it the same, reliability replaces repeat readings, and uncertainty becomes evaluating the method. GCSE specifications from AQA, Edexcel and OCR each publish required practicals, and practical skills also carry marks in the written papers through questions on experimental design, data handling and error. A pupil who can already separate what changed, what was measured and what was held constant writes a better year 7 report than one meeting that vocabulary for the first time.
None of this needs a laboratory: a fair test on paper towels works at the kitchen table, with three brands, the same sheet size, the same water temperature and volume, and the time taken to soak through recorded for each. An observation over time fits on a windowsill, with one tray by the window and one in a cupboard, measured at the same hour each day and plotted as a line graph over two weeks. Classification can be practised with groceries, sorted by two criteria the child chooses and then written up as a key that someone else has to follow.
Science is not one of the statutory key stage 2 test subjects, which are English and mathematics; science outcomes come mainly from teacher assessment, with a separate science sampling exercise involving only a sample of schools. That makes the everyday written record the evidence, and a page without units or a conclusion supports very little when a teacher sits down to judge it. When I look through a child's science book I check three things first: whether the question was rewritten into something testable, whether the results table carries units, and whether the conclusion refers back to the numbers.
Three short routines turn enquiry skills into a habit. Before any equipment comes out, write one sentence naming the question and the single condition that will change; before packing up, put the numbers into a table with units and circle the reading that does not fit. After writing the conclusion, add one line about what the data cannot settle, which is the part teachers look for and the part children leave out.
