📚 States of Matter | 物质状态
Everything around us is made up of matter, and on Earth almost all of it exists as a solid, liquid or gas. These three states behave very differently, but they are linked by the same particle theory: all substances consist of tiny particles in constant motion, and the amount of energy those particles have determines the state. Understanding how particles are arranged and move is the key to explaining melting, boiling, condensing, freezing and even unusual changes like sublimation. In the OCR GCSE Science specification, you need to be able to describe the properties of solids, liquids and gases using the particle model, interpret heating and cooling curves, and use ideas about kinetic energy and forces between particles to explain changes of state.
1. The Three States of Matter | 三种物质状态
Matter on Earth commonly exists as a solid, a liquid or a gas. The state depends on how strongly the particles are held together and how much movement energy they possess. In a solid, the particles are tightly packed, often in a regular pattern, and they only vibrate in fixed positions. In a liquid, the particles are still close together but can slide past each other, allowing the liquid to flow and take the shape of its container. In a gas, the particles are far apart, moving rapidly in all directions, and they completely fill any container. These simple differences explain why a solid has a fixed shape and volume, a liquid has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container, and a gas has no fixed shape or volume.
2. The Particle Model | 粒子模型
The particle model is a simple but powerful way of thinking about matter. It assumes that all substances consist of small, constantly moving particles. In solids, strong forces hold the particles close together in a fixed arrangement. In liquids, the forces are weaker, giving the particles freedom to move around each other. In gases, the forces between particles are very weak and the particles move at high speed in straight lines until they collide with each other or the walls of the container. Although real atoms and molecules are more complex, this model successfully explains most of the physical properties you will meet at GCSE level, including density, compressibility and expansion on heating.
3. Properties of Solids | 固体的性质
Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume. The particles in a solid are arranged in a regular pattern and held together by strong forces. They cannot leave their positions; they can only vibrate about fixed points. As a result, solids cannot flow and are very difficult to compress because the particles are already as close together as possible. When a solid is heated, the particles vibrate more vigorously and take up slightly more space, which is why solids expand a little when their temperature rises. The regular, repeating structure in many solids is called a crystalline lattice, which explains why crystals have flat faces and sharp edges.
4. Properties of Liquids | 液体的性质
Liquids have a definite volume but no fixed shape – they take the shape of the bottom of their container. The particles in a liquid are still close together but the forces between them are weaker than in a solid, so the particles can move around randomly and slide past one another. This allows liquids to flow and be poured. Like solids, liquids are very difficult to compress because there is very little space between the particles. When heated, liquid particles gain kinetic energy and move faster, which causes the liquid to expand slightly. The surface of a liquid behaves like a stretched skin due to surface tension, which is caused by uneven forces on particles at the surface.
5. Properties of Gases | 气体的性质
Gases have no fixed shape and no fixed volume – they spread out to fill the whole of their container. The particles in a gas are far apart and move rapidly in all directions, colliding with each other and the container walls. The forces between gas particles are extremely weak, so they can move freely. Because there is a lot of empty space between the particles, gases can be compressed easily. When a gas is heated, its particles gain even more kinetic energy, so they move faster and hit the container walls harder and more often. This increases the pressure if the gas is held in a fixed volume, or causes the gas to expand if the container allows it.
6. Changes of State | 状态变化
Matter changes state when it is heated or cooled enough. The main changes are melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), boiling or evaporating (liquid to gas), condensing (gas to liquid), and sublimation (solid directly to gas). During a change of state, energy is transferred to or from the particles, but the temperature stays constant. This energy is called latent heat: it breaks or forms bonds between particles rather than raising the temperature. The reverse change involves the same amount of energy transfer. For example, melting ice at 0 °C needs the same amount of energy that would be released when water freezes at 0 °C.
7. Melting and Boiling | 熔化与沸腾
Melting is the change from solid to liquid. It happens at a specific temperature called the melting point. At this temperature, the particles gain enough kinetic energy to overcome some of the forces holding them in fixed positions. Boiling is the change from liquid to gas that occurs throughout the liquid at a specific temperature – the boiling point. Unlike evaporation, which can happen at any temperature only at the surface, boiling is a bulk effect. For a pure substance, melting and boiling points are sharp and can be used to identify the substance or check its purity. Impurities tend to lower the melting point and raise the boiling point.
8. Condensation and Freezing | 冷凝与凝固
Condensation is the change from gas to liquid. It occurs when a gas is cooled enough that its particles lose kinetic energy. As they slow down, the weak forces of attraction between them become significant enough to pull the particles closer together, forming a liquid. Freezing is the change from liquid to solid. At the freezing point, the liquid particles lose so much energy that they can no longer move past each other; instead they become locked into a fixed arrangement. Both condensation and freezing release energy to the surroundings, because previously supplied latent heat is given out as bonds form between the particles.
9. Sublimation and Deposition | 升华与凝华
Some substances can change directly from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid first. This process is called sublimation. Iodine, solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) and naphthalene are common examples. When solid carbon dioxide is heated, it does not melt but turns straight into a gas, which is why it creates a dramatic fog effect. The opposite change, from gas directly to solid, is called deposition. Frost forming on a cold surface from water vapour on a freezing morning is an example of deposition. These processes can be explained by the particle model: the particles in the solid gain enough energy to escape the surface entirely, or gas particles lose so much energy that they settle directly into a solid structure.
10. Heating and Cooling Curves | 加热与冷却曲线
A heating curve is a graph of temperature against time as a substance is heated steadily. For a pure solid, the temperature rises until the melting point is reached. Then the line levels off: the temperature stays constant while the solid melts, because all the energy supplied is used to overcome the forces between particles. Once the solid has completely melted, the temperature of the liquid begins to rise again. It then levels off again at the boiling point while the liquid turns into a gas. A cooling curve looks the reverse: the temperature falls, then plateaus during condensation and again during freezing as energy is released. You should be able to identify the plateaus and explain why the temperature remains constant during changes of state.
11. Diffusion in Gases and Liquids | 气体与液体中的扩散
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, driven by the random motion of particles. It happens quickly in gases because the particles are far apart and move fast, so a gas spreads rapidly through another gas. Diffusion also occurs in liquids, but much more slowly because the particles are closer together and their movement is more restricted. The rate of diffusion depends on factors such as temperature (higher temperature gives particles more kinetic energy, so they diffuse faster) and the mass of the particles (lighter particles travel faster than heavier ones at the same temperature). You can observe diffusion by placing a coloured crystal in water or by opening a perfume bottle in one corner of a room.
12. Exam Tips for States of Matter | 物质状态考点与应试技巧
In the OCR GCSE Science exam, you may be asked to describe the arrangement and motion of particles in each state. Always use key words such as 'regular arrangement', 'close together', 'slide past each other' and 'random, fast movement'. When explaining changes of state, remember to mention that temperature remains constant and that energy is used to break or form inter-particle forces, not to change temperature. Use the term 'latent heat' for energy transferred during a change of state. For heating and cooling curves, clearly label the melting and boiling points and explain why the line is horizontal. If a question asks about diffusion, link the speed of diffusion to the kinetic energy of particles. Finally, be precise: for example, solids do not just 'have a shape', they have a fixed shape and fixed volume.
