AQA's specification threads market structure through section 3.1.5, and the essay questions almost never ask for a definition on its own; they hand you an industry and expect a judgement about where it sits, what that does to price and output, and whether intervention can be justified. Candidates who can only label a market usually stall around the middle bands, because labelling is recall while comparison is analysis. The passages below work through the spectrum in the order the specification uses.
Where a market sits on the spectrum is settled by three dimensions: the number of firms, the degree of product differentiation, and the ease of entry and exit. A high street with a dozen barbers and a grocery sector dominated by four chains both contain several sellers, yet only one of them behaves competitively; what separates them is substitutability and the height of entry barriers. Answers that run through all three before naming a structure read as analysis rather than recall, and they give the examiner something to credit even when the final label is debatable.
The model rests on many sellers too small to move the price, a homogeneous product, perfect information, free entry and exit, and mobile factors of production. Under those assumptions the individual firm faces a horizontal demand curve, since any increase sends customers elsewhere and any cut is pointless; that horizontal line is simultaneously average revenue and marginal revenue, so AR = MR = price. AQA describes the model as a yardstick for judging how far real markets fall short of efficiency, not as a description of any market you can point to. Saying so explicitly protects you from the common accusation of describing a world that does not exist.
In the short run a competitive firm can earn supernormal profit whenever the market price sits above average total cost, and it produces where MC = MR, with the rectangle between price and average cost measuring that profit. The long run tells a different story, because absent barriers the profit attracts entrants, industry supply shifts right, the market price falls, and the firm's horizontal revenue line slides down with it. Adjustment stops where supernormal profit has been competed away, at a price equal to minimum average total cost and nothing more than normal profit. Being able to mark the profit, normal-profit and loss cases on the same diagram, and to explain why a loss-making firm keeps producing while price covers average variable cost, is what separates a full-mark diagram from a sketch.
Allocative efficiency is the condition that price equals marginal cost, because price measures what the last unit is worth to consumers and marginal cost measures what it costs society to make it. Productive efficiency requires output at minimum average cost, so that no scale economies are being wasted. Dynamic efficiency is judged over time, through innovation and product improvement, and it depends on whether profit is available to fund research. Long-run perfect competition satisfies the first two and fails the third, since normal profit leaves nothing for research and perfect information lets rivals copy any improvement immediately. Those three tests recur in every structure that follows, and keeping them distinct prevents the muddle that costs marks in comparison questions.
Monopolistic competition keeps many firms and low entry barriers, but differentiated products give each seller a sliver of pricing power, so the demand curve slopes down and marginal revenue sits beneath average revenue. Short-run supernormal profit is possible; in the long run entry pushes each existing firm's demand curve leftwards until only normal profit remains. The long-run position is still inefficient in the standard model, since price exceeds marginal cost and output falls short of the level that would minimise average cost, a gap known as excess capacity. The half-empty coffee shop on the corner is exactly what the model predicts, and it makes the point that differentiation is not free: consumers pay for the difference.
What defines an oligopoly is not simply a small number of firms but interdependence: any move by one firm invites a response, so each must guess its rivals' reactions before acting. The kinked demand curve turns that guessing into an explanation of price rigidity, since a price rise is not matched while a cut is, leaving a kink at the ruling price and a vertical gap in marginal revenue; costs can move within that gap without changing price or output. The model is criticised for describing rigidity without explaining how the price was reached in the first place, and saying so earns more than a tidy diagram on its own. Collusion offers the other route, and a cartel can lift joint profit, though each member gains by undercutting it.
A pure monopoly means a single seller, though exam questions usually care more about monopoly power, which is the ability to influence price, output and the terms of competition. Economies of scale and a large minimum efficient scale put an incumbent's costs beyond an entrant's reach, while patents, licences, control of a key resource or distribution network, brand loyalty, limit pricing and heavy sunk costs all raise the wall further. In the UK the Competition and Markets Authority treats a 25 per cent share of supply as one test of whether a relevant merger situation exists, a threshold set by section 23 of the Enterprise Act 2002; cite it carefully rather than as a legal definition of monopoly. A natural monopoly is the special case where the market supports only one producer and splitting it would raise costs, which is why water and rail networks are regulated rather than broken up.
Reading a monopoly diagram follows a fixed order, and getting it backwards ruins the answer: find output where MC = MR, then read up to the demand curve for price, never across to marginal revenue. A numerical run makes the point concrete. With demand P = 200 - 4Q and constant marginal cost of 40, total revenue is 200Q - 4Q squared and marginal revenue is 200 - 8Q, so MC = MR gives Q = 20 and a price of 120 read from demand. Competitive pricing would set 200 - 4Q = 40, giving Q = 40 at a price of 40, so the monopolist sells half the quantity at three times the price. Deadweight loss is the triangle between them, half of 80 times 20, which comes to 800; if average total cost at that output is 90, supernormal profit is 30 per unit and 600 in total.
Price discrimination needs three conditions at once: the firm must hold market power, it must be able to separate markets and prevent resale, and the price elasticity of demand must differ between them. Remove any one and arbitrage flattens the price difference. Third-degree discrimination is the version you meet most often, in student tickets, advance booking and peak versus off-peak fares. The welfare verdict has to be split in two, since output may rise and previously unserved markets may be supplied, while consumer surplus is transferred to the producer; answers that stop at the firm earning more miss both halves of the judgement.
The number of firms is not the only measure of how competitive a market really is. Contestability theory points out that where entry and exit are cheap and sunk costs are low, the threat of entry alone constrains an incumbent, even when it is the only seller in the market. Hit-and-run entry is the mechanism, since a price above cost invites a newcomer to take the profit and leave without writing off unrecoverable investment. A market with dozens of firms and very high sunk costs can therefore be harder to enter than one with a single firm and free movement, which is a useful way to challenge the instinct that few sellers must mean poor performance.
Section 3.1.5.8 frames competition as a dynamic process rather than a static outcome, and creative destruction is its shorthand: firms compete on quality, cost and service as well as price, and a new method wipes out the incumbent generation along with its profits. That also supplies the other side of the monopoly argument, because where supernormal profit comes from innovation the high profit is itself an invitation to entrants, provided the barrier is not legal or administrative. The case for monopoly rests on scale economies and the funding of research, and patents are the deliberate trade of temporary exclusivity for disclosure and continued investment. The counter-case is just as strong, since protected profit can be spent fortifying the barrier instead of funding anything new.
The 25-mark essay is marked across knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation, and the structure the mark scheme rewards moves from analysis to a supported judgement. What examiners see too often is a description of the industry with no link back to the model, followed by an evaluation paragraph that simply repeats the analysis. A workable pattern attaches a diagram or a number to each argument and then states the condition on which the verdict turns, whether that is the height of entry barriers, the scale of sunk costs or the vigour of regulation. One conditional judgement at the end scores better than a one-sided conclusion, and it needs only a sentence or two if the condition is stated precisely.
