AQA GCSE
In the AQA GCSE Biology (8461) specification, Organisation is section 4.2 and it feeds straight into Paper 1. The chapter links cells, tissues, organs and organ systems into one story: the digestive system breaks food into small soluble molecules, the circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients, and plants run a parallel transport system in xylem and phloem. Two required practicals, food tests and the effect of pH on amylase, sit inside the same chapter. What follows tracks the order of the AQA specification, with the marks students most often drop flagged as we go.
Cells are the basic building blocks, and a tissue is a group of cells with a similar structure and function. Organs are aggregations of several tissues performing a specific job, and organ systems group organs that work together for the whole organism; the stomach wall, for instance, combines epithelium, muscle, connective tissue and glands. AQA expects size and scale to be part of this discussion, which is why a red blood cell at roughly 7 to 8 micrometres and a small intestine measured in metres are worth comparing. Villi in the small intestine enlarge the absorbing surface, an adaptation at organ level rather than cell level, so treating a system as a mere stack of organs misreads 4.2.1.
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts and are not used up by the reactions they speed up. Each enzyme has an active site whose shape is complementary to its substrate, and the lock and key model is the simplified explanation AQA expects students to use. Rate calculations divide the amount of product formed or substrate used by the time taken, so the units have to match the data given in the question. Heat beyond an optimum distorts the active site permanently, which is denaturation rather than a reversible slowdown; a frequent exam error is to say the enzyme is broken down during the reaction, a claim that costs the mark outright.
Most human enzymes work fastest near 37 degrees Celsius, close to body temperature, because collisions between substrate and active site become more frequent as molecules move faster. Past the optimum the bonds holding the active site together begin to break, so the rate falls sharply rather than levelling off; cold, by contrast, slows an enzyme without denaturing it, which is why activity can return when the temperature rises again and why conflating the two is a routine error. Each enzyme also has an optimum pH, with pepsin working in acid and intestinal enzymes in alkaline conditions, while required practical 5 samples the starch and amylase mixture every 30 seconds, adds iodine to check for the blue-black colour and keeps the temperature steady in a water bath.
Amylase is a carbohydrase that breaks starch into simpler sugars such as maltose, and it is released by the salivary glands and the pancreas. Proteases split proteins into amino acids, with pepsin active in the acid stomach and pancreatic proteases continuing the job in the small intestine. Lipases break lipids into glycerol and fatty acids, mostly from the pancreas and the small intestine wall. Bile, made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, is alkaline enough to neutralise stomach acid and emulsifies large fat droplets into smaller ones, which raises the surface area available to lipase; bile contains no digestive enzymes, a point that turns up wrongly in exam answers every year.
Iodine turns from brown to blue-black when starch is present, and that colour shift is the whole test. Benedict's solution needs a hot water bath for a few minutes and gives a brick red precipitate with reducing sugar, while a solution that stays blue means the sugar is absent. Biuret reagent shifts from blue to purple after shaking and a short wait, signalling protein. Lipids are detected by the emulsion test, where ethanol mixed with an equal volume of water produces a cloudy white layer on the surface; a common slip is to add Benedict's solution to a cold sample and record a negative, because the heating step was skipped.
The heart is a double pump: the right ventricle sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery, and oxygenated blood returns through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium. The left ventricle drives oxygenated blood around the body via the aorta, while the vena cava empties into the right atrium. Its muscular wall is much thicker than the right ventricle's because it has to push blood around the whole systemic circuit; coronary arteries branch from the base of the aorta and supply the heart muscle itself. A group of cells in the right atrium sets the resting heart rate and acts as the natural pacemaker, which artificial devices can correct when the rhythm goes wrong; AQA does not require the names of the valves.
Arteries carry blood away from the heart, with thick walls containing elastic fibres and muscle plus a narrow lumen that withstands the pressure of ventricular contraction. Veins return blood at low pressure, so their walls are thinner, the lumen is wider and valves stop backflow while surrounding muscles help push blood along. Capillaries are one cell thick with a very narrow lumen, and their slow flow is what allows exchange with tissues. The structural differences follow from pressure and distance rather than needing to be memorised as a list; swapping the wall descriptions of arteries and veins is a dependable way to lose marks, and blood flow rate is again volume divided by time.
Blood is a tissue made of plasma with red cells, white cells and platelets suspended in it. Plasma is a pale yellow liquid carrying dissolved glucose, amino acids, carbon dioxide, urea and hormones. Red blood cells are biconcave discs without a nucleus, packed with haemoglobin that binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it in tissues, and that shape raises the surface area to volume ratio. White cells keep a nucleus and defend the body, some by engulfing pathogens, while platelets are cell fragments that trigger clotting. Under the microscope the red cells are by far the most numerous and have no nucleus, which is how they are told apart from the larger, nucleated white cells.
Coronary heart disease is non-communicable: fatty material builds up inside the coronary arteries, narrows them and reduces the oxygen reaching heart muscle. Stents hold the narrowed artery open and work quickly, though clots and re-narrowing remain risks, while statins lower blood cholesterol and slow the deposition of fatty material but have to be taken long term. Faulty valves can be replaced with biological or mechanical versions, and mechanical valves last longer at the cost of lifelong anticoagulant drugs. Heart failure may need a transplant, with artificial hearts used as a bridge while a donor is found, and those devices carry infection and mechanical failure risks; examiners want benefits and risks weighed separately, so an answer listing only advantages rarely reaches full marks.
Health, in AQA's wording, is a state of physical and mental well-being rather than simply the absence of disease; communicable and non-communicable diseases both cause ill health, and diet, stress and living conditions shape physical and mental states as well. Diseases interact: immune defects raise the risk of infection, some viruses living inside cells can trigger cancers, immune reactions to pathogens can produce allergies such as rashes and asthma, and severe physical illness can lead to depression. Exam questions often supply incidence data and ask for translation between tables, bar charts and scatter diagrams, while sampling principles mean answers should say whether a sample is representative before conclusions are drawn.
A risk factor raises the chance of a disease and may come from lifestyle, from substances in the body or from the environment; smoking is linked to lung cancer and lung disease, obesity is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, alcohol affects the liver and brain, and smoking or drinking during pregnancy affects the unborn baby. Carcinogens such as ionising radiation raise cancer risk, and some cancers also have genetic risk factors. Cancer is uncontrolled cell division: benign tumours stay in one place, usually within a membrane, while malignant tumours invade neighbouring tissue and spread in the blood to form secondary tumours; benign is not the same as harmless, since a tumour pressing on a vital structure can still cause serious problems.
A leaf is a plant organ, and a transverse section shows several tissues with distinct jobs. The upper and lower epidermis protect the leaf, often with a waxy cuticle that limits water loss. Palisade mesophyll sits near the upper surface, tightly packed and rich in chloroplasts, which is where most photosynthesis happens. Spongy mesophyll below it is loosely arranged with large air spaces for gas diffusion, while xylem and phloem form the veins that carry water and minerals or dissolved sugars. Meristem tissue at the tips of shoots and roots keeps dividing, and each stoma is a gap between two guard cells that swell to open it and shrink to close it, controlling gas exchange and water loss.
Root hair cells are long and thin, pushing between soil particles to give a large surface for water uptake by osmosis, with mineral ions taken in by active transport. Xylem is made of hollow dead cells strengthened with lignin, and water plus dissolved minerals move up from root to stem and leaf in the transpiration stream. Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from stomata, and it speeds up with higher temperature, drier air, stronger air movement and brighter light. Phloem consists of elongated living cells whose end walls have pores, allowing cell sap to pass from one cell to the next as dissolved sugars travel from leaves to the rest of the plant, a process called translocation; xylem and phloem are separate routes running in different directions, not one shared pipeline.
