Map skills are one of the few parts of geography that pupils meet in primary school and then keep using to the end of key stage 3; the requirements sit in the DfE geography programme of study. Many pupils treat map work as a hunt for named places, when each question is really testing three moves: locate, convert and interpret. This article takes the six threads that carry the marks, grid references, scale, contours, bearings, keys and fieldwork records, and gives each one an example you can repeat with any Ordnance Survey sheet.
The DfE geography programme of study, published on 11 September 2013 and taught in maintained schools from September 2014, sets out map skills in two stages; key stage 2 covers eight compass points, four and six figure grid references, symbols and keys, while key stage 3 asks pupils to interpret Ordnance Survey maps in the classroom and in the field, using grid references, scale, topographical and thematic mapping, aerial and satellite photographs. The same document expects pupils to view, analyse and interpret places and data with geographical information systems, and to collect and analyse fieldwork data in contrasting locations. In practice the jump between the two stages is about calculation and judgement rather than recognition, so a pupil who can name every symbol may still lose marks on a distance or gradient question. That is why examiners reward a stated method even when the final number is slightly out.
Scale is the ratio between a length on the map and the same length on the ground, and Ordnance Survey publishes its two main series at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000; one centimetre stands for 250 metres on the Explorer sheet and 500 metres on the Landranger sheet. The routine never changes: measure the line, multiply by the denominator, then convert centimetres into metres or kilometres. A path of 4.5 cm on a 1:50,000 sheet is therefore 225,000 cm, or 2.25 km, on the ground; working the other way, a 3 km walk should appear as 12 cm. Many pupils convert once instead of twice, which shifts the answer by a factor of a hundred.
Ordnance Survey maps are built on the National Grid, which divides the country into one kilometre squares grouped into 100 km blocks labelled with two letters. Read eastings first and northings second; take the two digit number from the left edge of the square and the two digit number from the bottom edge, then join them, so a square whose easting is 34 and northing is 56 becomes 3456. Thin blue lines mark every kilometre and thicker lines mark every ten kilometres, and a four figure reference describes a whole square kilometre rather than a point; a question asking for a feature in square 3456 still leaves a kilometre of ground to search. Examiners see the two numbers reversed regularly, and that answer earns nothing however neat the handwriting.
A six figure reference pins a feature down to 100 metres by splitting each kilometre square into tenths; read the two digit easting and the two digit northing as before, then estimate how far across and how far up the feature sits. A church seven tenths of the way across square 34 and three tenths up square 56 is written 347563. Estimating by eye is accurate enough as long as your tenths are consistent, and the six digits must run together with no spaces or commas. The usual slip is reading only the printed edge numbers and guessing nothing about the inside of the square, which moves the answer by hundreds of metres.
Contour lines join points of equal height, and the first thing to check is the interval printed in the legend, which is normally ten metres on a 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey sheet and tighter on a 1:25,000 sheet. Closely spaced lines mean a steep slope and widely spaced lines mean gentle ground; every fifth line is drawn thicker and labelled with its height so you can count up quickly. Where contours form a V, the point of the V aims uphill along a valley, because water runs the other way. Rings that close on themselves mark a hill, unless a small tick inside shows a hollow.
A cross section slices the landscape along a straight line and shows it from the side; mark where that line meets each contour, lift the heights onto a horizontal base, and join the points with a smooth curve. Gradient is rise over run, and both numbers can be measured from the same sheet, so a rise of 60 metres over 400 metres of ground gives 0.15, or 15 per cent. Set the top of the vertical axis a little above the highest point so the profile does not run off the paper. Pupils often draw the vertical scale to match the horizontal one by accident, which flattens the profile and costs marks whenever the question asks for the vertical exaggeration.
Bearings are measured clockwise from north and written as three digits, so east is 090, south is 180 and west is 270; line the zero mark of the protractor up with the vertical grid lines that show north. The eight points of the compass learned at key stage 2 still matter, each 45 degrees apart, and they are the quickest way to describe a general direction before measuring the precise angle. Giving a bearing together with a distance makes a route description verifiable, which is exactly what a route question wants. Writing 90 instead of 090 is a small mistake that turns a correct angle into a wrong answer.
Symbols stand in for real features and the legend is the only authority for what they mean, which is why Ordnance Survey sheets print one on every edition; roads, bridges, woodland, marsh, churches, post offices and campsites all have fixed signs. Land the square with a grid reference first, then compare the shape inside that square with the legend instead of guessing from memory. Detail changes with scale, since a 1:25,000 sheet shows field boundaries, walls and footpaths that a 1:50,000 sheet drops. Calling every patch of blue a lake is a common error when the symbol may mark a reservoir, a pond or a bathing pool, and the question usually wants the exact name rather than the general category.
Straight line distances are measured with a ruler and converted with the scale, while a curved road or river is followed with a piece of thread or a strip of paper that is then straightened against the ruler; the result is longer than the straight line and much closer to reality. Two anchors make the conversion quick: 2 cm on a 1:50,000 sheet is one kilometre, and 4 cm on a 1:25,000 sheet is also one kilometre. The diagonal of a kilometre square is about 1.41 km, not 1 km, so measuring a diagonal with the side value understates the distance. Show the working as well as the answer, because method marks are awarded separately from the final figure.
The programme of study expects key stage 3 pupils to use geographical information systems to view, analyse and interpret places and data, which joins paper maps to screens; a digital map keeps the same National Grid and the same symbols, but the scale changes as you zoom, so any distance you measure has to be converted with the scale shown on screen. Digimap for Schools adds historical maps, aerial photography and census layers so that one place can be compared across decades. Layering is the heart of the system: separate rivers, roads and population, switch one off, and the relationship between the others becomes visible. Satellite and aerial images add information a map never carries, such as current land use and vegetation.
Fieldwork at key stage 3 means collecting data in contrasting locations, analysing it and drawing conclusions, and the map is the tool that makes each site findable again; note the six figure reference of every sampling point before you start measuring. Write the method down with the reading, so a river width measured with a tape and a velocity measured with a float over ten metres can be repeated by someone else. A sketch needs a north arrow and a scale, even a rough one such as one pace of about 0.75 m, or it cannot be turned into data. Pupils often record the numbers and forget the location, which leaves a table of readings that cannot be plotted.
GCSE geography specifications carry map skills in the assessment requirements, and the cartographic and fieldwork strands appear in AQA 8035, OCR J383, Edexcel 1GA0 and CAIE 0460, so the conversions practised at key stage 3 keep their value. Work in a fixed order: read the scale and the contour interval, check the legend, then locate the feature with a grid reference. Distances and heights need units, and a gradient answer without the per cent sign loses the accuracy mark. When two slopes are compared, count the contours on both sides before deciding which is steeper. Markers see the same omission every year, a location described without a grid reference, which leaves nothing to check.
