Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound, when molten or in aqueous solution, by the passage of an electric current, and both limits in that sentence are exactly what examiners look for. In a simple cell the anode is the positive electrode, the cathode is the negative electrode, and the electrolyte is the substance being decomposed; graphite and platinum are used as inert electrodes because they pass electrons on without taking part in the reaction. A quick check on anion and cation settles the direction of travel, since negative anions move towards the positive anode while positive cations move towards the negative cathode.
A solid ionic compound cannot conduct because its ions are locked in the lattice and only vibrate about fixed positions, so nothing carries charge from one place to another. Melting the compound or dissolving it in water frees the ions, which is why electrolysis needs a molten or aqueous electrolyte, and the charge then travels in three stages. Electrons flow through the external circuit from the negative terminal to the cathode and back from the anode, electrons are gained at the cathode and lost at the anode, and inside the electrolyte the current is carried by ions moving in opposite directions rather than by free electrons.
Molten lead(II) bromide contains only lead ions and bromide ions, so the cathode collects lead and the anode collects bromine with no competition at all. An aqueous solution always brings water into the picture, adding hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions that compete with the solute for the electrons available at each electrode. The Extended statements ask for predictions about halide solutions, where a concentrated solution gives the halogen at the anode and a very dilute one usually gives oxygen; in concentrated sodium chloride solution the cathode produces hydrogen and the anode produces yellow-green chlorine, and a student who treats the solution as if it were molten loses the mark straight away.
Each named example has a fixed set of observations, and molten lead(II) bromide gives grey lead beads at the cathode with red-brown bromine vapour at the anode, which is why that experiment belongs in a fume cupboard. Electrolysis of concentrated sodium chloride solution produces hydrogen at the cathode and yellow-green chlorine at the anode, while dilute sulfuric acid gives hydrogen and oxygen in a volume ratio of about two to one, matching the composition of water. Examiners want observations rather than conclusions, so yellow-green gas scores where the words chlorine gas may not; a lighted splint, a glowing splint and damp litmus paper confirm hydrogen, oxygen and chlorine, and bubbles appear only at the electrode surfaces rather than along the wires.
The cathode is limited to metals and hydrogen, and the choice between them depends on where the metal sits in the reactivity series that the syllabus lists in 9.4. Ions of metals above hydrogen, such as sodium, stay in solution while hydrogen ions take the electrons, which is why electrolysis of sodium chloride solution gives hydrogen rather than sodium, whereas copper and silver ions are discharged as the metal itself. A molten electrolyte removes the question altogether because only one cation is present, and the same reasoning does not apply to inert graphite electrodes, which simply pass electrons on.
At the anode the syllabus fixes the rule that non-metals other than hydrogen are formed, so the products are elements such as a halogen or oxygen. A concentrated halide solution gives the halogen while a dilute solution or dilute sulfuric acid gives oxygen from hydroxide ions, and telling the two apart comes down to reading the words concentrated or dilute in the question. When the anode is a reactive metal such as copper there is no gas at all, because the electrode itself is oxidised and passes into solution as copper ions, which is the clearest difference between copper and carbon electrodes in copper(II) sulfate solution.
Copper(II) sulfate solution is the one aqueous system the Extended statements set out in detail, and inert carbon electrodes give a completely different answer from copper electrodes. With carbon or graphite, copper is deposited at the cathode while oxygen is released at the anode, the blue colour fades, and the solution turns more acidic as sulfuric acid forms. With copper electrodes the anode dissolves and the cathode gains an equal amount of copper, so the concentration hardly changes; that transfer of copper from one electrode to the other is the basis of copper refining and of electroplating, and reading the words inert or copper electrodes decides which version the question wants.
Ionic half-equations are a Supplement requirement, with reduction written at the cathode and oxidation written at the anode, and the electrons on the left and on the right respectively. Molten lead(II) bromide splits into lead ions gaining two electrons and bromide ions losing one electron each, and the two half-equations add together with the electrons cancelling out. For copper(II) sulfate the cathode equation is straightforward, while the oxygen-producing anode step needs four hydroxide ions, four electrons and two water molecules, and checking atoms and total charge on each side is what keeps an equation honest.
Electroplating exists to improve the appearance of a metal object and to make it more resistant to corrosion, and the circuit has three fixed points. The object to be plated is always the cathode, the plating metal is the anode, and the electrolyte contains ions of that plating metal. Silver plating on iron therefore uses a silver anode in a solution of silver ions; silver is deposited on the object while the anode dissolves at the same rate, so the concentration stays roughly constant, and mixing up anode and cathode ruins the finish.
The Core statement is a single sentence, because a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity with water as the only chemical product. The Extended comparison asks for both sides: fuel cells emit no carbon dioxide at the point of use, run quietly and convert chemical energy directly into electricity, while hydrogen is awkward to store, energy-hungry to produce, and dependent on expensive platinum catalysts and a filling network that barely exists. Petrol engines answer with high energy density, fast refuelling and a mature supply chain, and an answer that mentions only the environmental advantage usually falls short of full marks.
Revision works well in reverse order: memorise the products and observations for the three named systems first, then add the concentrated and dilute halide predictions together with half-equations, and finish by testing yourself on both versions of the copper(II) sulfate answer. Mixed observations and conclusions, anode and cathode swapped, and unbalanced charge in half-equations are the three mistakes that cost marks most often, and each one fades after three written attempts; if you want your half-equations checked line by line, get in touch with us.
