Every year thousands of postgraduate applicants in the UK complete the academic side of their student finance application perfectly, then lose weeks of funding because of one small administrative step: proving who they are. For most applicants the identity check happens invisibly online, using a valid UK passport. The form is short, but every field matters. It normally contains two sections: one completed by you, and one completed by the person confirming your identity.

The signatory must not be a relative, a partner, someone living at the same address, or anyone with a personal or financial interest in your loan. In most cases the form also requires that the person has known you for at least two years, so a university staff member you met last week will not usually be acceptable - check the current form's wording before you ask.
