📚 How Are UK Boarding Schools and Residential Special Schools Inspected? |

A boarding school in the United Kingdom is never only a school. It is an educational institution and a residential care setting at the same time, and the law insists that it is inspected as both. That double identity is the single most important idea to grasp: two different regulatory traditions, two different inspectorates and two different sets of standards can all arrive at the same building, sometimes in the same week. This article maps out who inspects what, against which standards, how often, what inspectors actually do on the day, and how the four nations of the UK differ.

1. Why Boarding Inspection Is Different |

Day schools are judged mainly on learning, teaching and outcomes. Boarding schools are judged on those things and also on the twenty-four hour lived experience of children: sleep, food, laundry, homesickness, medical care, friendships, mobile phone use, exeat weekends, bullying at 11pm, and the quality of the adults who live alongside them. Inspectors therefore look at the whole child, not only the lesson.

Two further features make the sector distinctive. First, many boarders are international students, some as young as eight, whose parents live overseas and whose legal status in the UK depends on the school holding a Student route sponsor licence. Second, boarders live on site, which means safeguarding failures cannot be escaped by going home at 4pm; the setting is the child's home.

2. The Regulators: Who Inspects What | 监管机构：谁检查什么

England has the most complex map. Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, and it holds two hats here: an education hat and a social care hat. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is approved by the Department for Education (DfE) to inspect independent schools that belong to associations within the Independent Schools Council (ISC).

The DfE sits above the English system as the registration authority for independent schools and the body that can ultimately act against a school that fails to meet the Independent School Standards. UK Visas and Immigration adds a further layer for schools sponsoring international pupils.
