📚 GCSE French, German and Spanish: Subject Conditions and Requirements | GCSE

GCSE French, German and Spanish come with one of the most tightly regulated sets of conditions of any optional subject: four equally weighted skills, tiered entry, a government-defined vocabulary list, and a speaking test that is conducted and recorded inside your own school. Understanding those conditions before you choose the subject - or before you sit the exams - is worth more marks than an extra hour of vocabulary drilling.

This guide covers what the qualification is, which exam boards offer it, how the four papers are weighted, what the tiers mean, what vocabulary and grammar you must know, how the speaking test works, what grades and tiers a school will ask for, how to choose between the three languages, and how the subject connects to A-Level and university.

1. What the Qualification Actually Is | 该资格证书究竟是什么

GCSE French, German and Spanish are optional qualifications taken at the end of Key Stage 4, normally in Year 11, though some schools enter candidates earlier. In England a modern foreign language is compulsory in Key Stages 2 and 3, but it becomes an optional subject at Key Stage 4 - which is why the conditions for taking it are set partly by national subject content and partly by individual school policy.
