📚 Grading and Naming Rules for UK Level 3 Alternative Academic and Technical Qualifications |
Most international students meet the UK system through A levels, and then discover that a large share of British 16-19 students take something else: BTEC Nationals, Cambridge Technicals, T Levels, Applied General Diplomas, graded music examinations and the Extended Project Qualification. These qualifications all sit at Level 3, yet they are graded and named on completely different rules. Understanding those rules is essential for reading an offer, checking a transcript or comparing two candidates.
1. What Counts as a Level 3 Alternative Qualification |
"Level 3" is a regulatory statement about difficulty, not about subject. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland it is defined by the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF); Wales additionally uses the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales (CQFW). A levels, AS levels, BTEC Nationals, Cambridge Technicals, T Levels, Access to Higher Education Diplomas and graded music examinations at Grade 6 and above all sit at Level 3.
(CQFW)。A Level、AS Level、BTEC National、Cambridge Technical、T Level、高等教育准入文凭(Access to HE)以及六级及以上的音乐等级考试,都位于三级。
Scotland does not use the term at all. It uses the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, where an Advanced Higher sits at SCQF Level 7 and a Higher at SCQF Level 6. So a Scottish applicant does not hold "Level 3" qualifications in the RQF sense, even when the level of demand is comparable.
