📚 How GCSE Reform Affects A-Level Maths and English Literature Preparation | GCSE改革如何影响学生A-Level数学与英语文学准备
The reform of GCSEs in England between 2015 and 2020 replaced A*-G grades with a 9-1 scale, removed modular examinations and controlled assessment from most subjects, and increased both the volume and the difficulty of the content. For students who continue to A-Level Maths or A-Level English Literature, these changes have reshaped what they already know on arrival in the sixth form, and what they still have to learn.
1. What the 9-1 GCSE Reform Actually Changed | 9-1 GCSE
The first reformed GCSEs were taught from September 2015 in English Language, English Literature and Maths, with first awards in 2017. Other subjects followed in waves, so a student beginning A-Level Maths today may have taken GCSEs from more than one generation of specifications depending on their option subjects.
All reformed GCSEs are linear: assessment takes place at the end of the two-year course through terminal examinations only. Modular routes were withdrawn, and the controlled assessment element that once existed in English Literature, where students drafted and redrafted extended work under teacher supervision, disappeared from the specification entirely.
