📚 How GCSE and A-Level Grades Are Decided: Grade Boundaries and the Marking Process Explained | GCSE与A-Level评分怎么定:分数线与阅卷流程说明
Every August, hundreds of thousands of students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland open an envelope and see one grade per subject. That grade looks simple, but it is the end product of a long and tightly regulated chain: papers are written and trialled, scripts are marked by trained examiners, raw marks are aggregated, and grade boundaries are fixed at awarding meetings. This guide explains how GCSE and A-Level grades are actually decided, what grade boundaries really are, and how the marking process protects fairness.
1. The Big Picture: From Answer Script to Final Grade |
Your final grade is not simply a percentage of the paper. It is a judgement about the standard of your work, expressed through a boundary system that is set after all the marking is complete. Two things are decided separately: your raw mark (how many marks the examiner awarded) and the boundary (how many marks were needed for each grade this year).
Grade boundaries are never published before results day, and they are never fixed in advance. They depend on how difficult the paper turned out to be, how the cohort performed, and how the outcomes compare with previous years. This is why a mark of 68% might be an A* in one year and a grade A in another.
Several groups of people sit behind your grade: your teachers (who deliver the course), assistant examiners (who mark), team leaders (who supervise markers), senior examiners (who set boundaries), the exam boards (who administer everything) and the regulators (who oversee standards).
2. Who Sets the Rules: Exam Boards, JCQ and Ofqual | 谁制定规则:考试局、JCQ与Ofqual
In England, GCSEs and A-Levels are offered by several independent exam boards: AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC Eduqas (which also serves Wales) and CCEA in Northern Ireland. Each board writes its own papers and sets its own boundaries, but all must follow the same national rules.
The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) publishes the common regulations that all boards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland adopt: instructions for conducting exams, access arrangements, special consideration, malpractice procedures and post-results services. This is why deadlines and appeal routes look identical across boards.
Ofqual regulates qualifications in England and must approve the rules for grading, including the 9-1 GCSE scale and the A* rule at A-Level. Qualifications Wales and CCEA Regulation carry out similar roles in Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland uses a different system entirely, run by the SQA, with National 5 and Highers graded A to D rather than 9 to 1.
3. The Marking Journey: Collecting, Scanning and Allocating Scripts |
After each exam, scripts are collected by the school or college, sorted by paper and candidate number, and either dispatched to the board or scanned on site depending on the board's system. Every script carries a barcode that links it to your entry, so the examiner never sees your name.
Answer booklets are then split into individual questions or groups of questions. This is called item-level marking or question-level marking. Instead of one examiner marking a whole script, hundreds of examiners each mark the same question across thousands of scripts, which makes marking far more consistent.
Some subjects are still marked on paper, particularly where diagrams, maps, music notation or artwork must be assessed by eye. Practical and coursework elements, such as science practical endorsements, art portfolios and non-exam assessment, are marked by teachers and then moderated by the board.
4. Standardisation, Seeding and Quality Assurance |
Before marking begins, every examiner must pass a standardisation exercise. They mark a set of practice scripts that senior examiners have already marked, and their marks must fall within an allowed tolerance. Only then are they allowed to mark live scripts.
Once marking is live, examiners receive seeding scripts, which are real candidate answers with known marks, mixed in without warning. If an examiner drifts outside tolerance, the system flags it, their marking may be stopped, they receive feedback, and all scripts already marked by that person may be re-marked.
Team leaders sample each examiner's work throughout the marking period, checking a proportion of every batch. At the end, senior examiners review scripts that fall just above and just below the expected grade boundaries, so that borderline decisions are made by the most experienced people.
This layered system explains why a review of marking rarely changes a grade dramatically. Marking is not perfect, but the combination of standardisation, seeding, sampling and senior review is designed to keep variation small.
5. Raw Marks, Weighting and Aggregation |
A raw mark is simply the number of marks an examiner awards on a paper. If Paper 1 is out of 80 and you score 62, your raw mark is 62. Raw marks are never comparable across papers, because each paper has a different maximum and a different level of difficulty.
Each component carries a weighting that reflects how much of the qualification it represents. For example, a GCSE might be 30% Paper 1, 40% Paper 2 and 30% non-exam assessment. The board converts each component mark into its weighted contribution before adding everything together.
Total Mark = Σ (Component Mark ÷ Component Maximum × Component Weighting)
The final total mark is then compared with the grade boundaries for that specification. Your certificate shows only the grade, not the mark, although your school or college can usually tell you the component marks if you ask.
6. Raw Marks vs UMS: What the Numbers Mean | 原始分与UMS:数字的含义
UMS stands for Uniform Mark Scale. It was introduced for modular qualifications so that marks from different exam sessions could be added together fairly, even when the papers were of slightly different difficulty. Each unit is given a fixed UMS total, usually 100.
