📚 GCSE Music 9-1 Subject Conditions and Requirements: Complete Rules Guide | GCSE
GCSE Music 9-1 is a single-tier, three-component qualification that combines practical music-making with listening and analysis. Its rules are unusually detailed: the Department for Education and Ofqual prescribe the exact balance of performing, composing and appraising, and each awarding body then publishes a specification that turns those rules into assessable tasks. This guide explains the conditions, entry expectations, timing rules, recording requirements and grading structure that govern the qualification, so that students, parents and teachers know precisely what is demanded and what is optional.
1. What GCSE Music 9-1 Actually Is | GCSE
GCSE Music 9-1 is the current version of the English GCSE in Music, introduced for first teaching from September 2016 and first awarded in summer 2018. It replaced the earlier A*–G graded GCSE Music. The qualification is single-tier: there is no foundation or higher paper, so every candidate sits the same listening examination and is assessed against the same standards.
It is regulated by Ofqual in England, and is awarded by several boards, principally AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas, with CCEA offering a Northern Ireland specification. Although GCSE Music is not part of the EBacc subject group, it counts as an open-bucket subject in Progress 8, which means it contributes to school accountability measures and is therefore widely available.
2. The Regulatory Framework Behind the Rules |
The conditions that apply to GCSE Music are not invented by the awarding bodies. They come from two sources: the Department for Education's statutory subject content for GCSE music, published in 2015, and Ofqual's GCSE qualification level conditions. Every accredited specification must comply with both. This is why the weightings and minimum timings look almost identical across AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas.
The mandated structure is as follows:
- Non-exam assessment (NEA) must total 60% of the qualification — 30% performing and 30% composing.
- The examined component must total 40% — appraising, taken as a listening and written paper.
- Performance must total at least 4 minutes, including at least one solo and at least one ensemble performance.
- Composition must total at least 3 minutes across two compositions, at least one written in response to a brief set by the board.
- Appraising must cover at least four areas of study, with set works drawn from them.
Performing 30% + Composing 30% + Appraising 40% = 100%
3. Choosing an Awarding Body |
Students rarely choose the board; the school does, and in practice the choice is fixed once teaching begins. What matters for a candidate is knowing which specification they are following, because the set works, the composition briefs and the recording rules differ. The table below summarises the main English specifications.
| Board | Code | Performing | Composing | Appraising | Exam length |
| AQA | 8271 | 30% | 30% | 40% | 1 h 30 min |
| Pearson Edexcel | 1MU0 | 30% | 30% | 40% | 1 h 45 min |
| OCR | J536 | 30% | 30% | 40% | 1 h 30 min |
| Eduqas | C510 | 30% | 30% | 40% | 1 h 30 min |
OCR differs structurally: its performing and composing assessments are grouped into an Integrated Portfolio and a Practical Component, but the overall 30/30/40 balance is preserved. Always confirm current codes and titles on the board's website, since specifications are periodically revised.
4. Entry Requirements and Prior Learning |
There is no statutory entry requirement for GCSE Music. Neither Ofqual nor the awarding bodies set a minimum grade, audition or theory qualification. In practice, however, schools set their own conditions, and these are the real "entry rules" a student must satisfy.
Typical centre-level expectations include:
- Practical standard: roughly equivalent to ABRSM, Trinity or RockSchool Grade 4–5 by the end of Year 11, or the ability to learn two contrasting pieces to that level.
- Notation or aural skill: ability to read staff notation, tab or chord charts, or to learn reliably by ear.
- Composition willingness: openness to writing original music, usually using notation software or a DAW.
- Analytical literacy: the reading and writing level needed for the 40% written paper.
- Access to an instrument and regular practice time.
Because the qualification is untiered, students of very different practical levels sit the same paper. A candidate who enters with only Grade 2 standard is not barred, but will find the performing and appraising components demanding unless they make rapid progress.
5. The Three Components at a Glance |
Every GCSE Music specification contains three components. Component 1 is Performing, assessed entirely by teachers and moderated by the board. Component 2 is Composing, also teacher-assessed and moderated. Component 3 is Appraising, assessed by a written examination with recorded musical extracts.
A useful way to think about the balance is that 60% of the marks come from work students create and perform over two years, and 40% comes from a single terminal examination. That ratio makes consistent coursework discipline more important than last-minute revision.
NEA (Performing 30% + Composing 30%) > Exam (Appraising 40%)
6. Performing: Rules and Conditions |
Performing is the component with the most explicit numerical rules. The total duration must be at least four minutes, and the programme must include at least one solo performance and at least one ensemble performance, with the ensemble element lasting at least one minute. Some specifications additionally require a minimum of one minute of solo playing.
Solo ≥ 1 min + Ensemble ≥ 1 min → Total ≥ 4 min
Other key conditions include:
- Choice of repertoire: pieces are selected by the student and teacher and may come from any genre or tradition, including non-notated traditions.
