📚 How to Avoid Losing Marks or Even Being Disqualified in Exams |
Every exam series produces two very different kinds of tragedy. The first is the candidate who knew the content but threw marks away through poor technique: unwritten working, a missing unit, an answer written outside the margin. The second is far worse - the candidate who is reported for malpractice and loses an entire qualification, not because they cheated, but because a phone was still in their pocket or because they said something to a friend at the wrong moment. This guide walks through both risks, from the regulations you are required to know, through the mechanics of answer booklets and method marks, to the practical checklist you should run the night before and the morning of every paper.
1. Read the Regulations Before You Read the Questions |
Every major board publishes a mandatory set of candidate regulations: JCQ's "Notice to Candidates" and "Warning to Candidates" for UK boards such as AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel and WJEC, and their equivalents from Cambridge International, Oxford AQA and the IB. Centres are required to display these notices, and you are required to read them and to sign a declaration confirming that you have done so. The single most important sentence in that document is that a breach of the regulations may result in disqualification from the whole qualification, not merely from one paper.
Ignorance of the rules is never accepted as a defence. Read the notice twice: once at the start of your course, when it feels abstract, and once in the week before your first paper, when it feels real. Print it, highlight the sections on phones, prohibited items and communication, and keep it with your revision notes.
2. Malpractice and Maladministration: Know the Difference |
Malpractice is a candidate's or a centre's failure to follow the rules, and it is dealt with as a formal allegation. Maladministration is an administrative error by the centre - the wrong paper, the wrong duration, a missing extra-time arrangement, a seating error. The distinction matters enormously, because maladministration usually leads to special consideration and a fair outcome, while malpractice can lead to penalties.
Malpractice(违规行为)是考生或考点未遵守规则,会作为正式指控处理;maladministration(考务失误)则是考点的管理错误——发错试卷、时间出错、额外时间安排遗漏、座位安排错误。
The most common candidate offences are: bringing unauthorised material into the exam room, whether or not you used it; copying from another candidate; collusion, which means working together on an assessment that should be your own; impersonation; disruptive behaviour; communicating with anyone other than an invigilator; and removing exam material from the room. Penalties range from a loss of marks for the paper, to a loss of the grade for the subject, to disqualification from every subject in that series.
3. Phones, Smart Watches and Prohibited Items |
The phone is the single biggest cause of disqualification worldwide, and the cruel detail is that the rule applies whether the device is switched on, switched off, or never touched. If a phone or any other unauthorised electronic device is found on you, or in your bag where it should not be, it is treated as a breach. The safe rule is simple: hand it in, or leave it at home.
| Mobile phone | 手机 | Prohibited unless formally collected | 除非由考点统一收取,否则禁止 | Leave at home; do not rely on "switched off" | 留在家里;不要指望"已关机"能免责 |
| Notes, revision cards | 笔记、复习卡 | Prohibited | 禁止 | Give them to a friend outside | 交给考场外的同学 |
| Water bottle with a label | 带标签的水瓶 | Label must be removed | 必须撕掉标签 | Peel it off the night before | 前一晚撕掉 |
Notice how quickly the list stops looking like cheating and starts looking like ordinary life. That is the point. Malpractice decisions are made on what is present and what happened, not on what you intended.
4. Time, Lateness and Absence: The Clock Is a Rule Too | 时间、迟到与缺考:时钟也是规则
Arrive at least twenty to thirty minutes before the scheduled start. If you arrive after the exam has begun but within the first hour, you may be admitted and may still receive the full duration, depending on your board's regulations. Arrive later than that and the centre may allow you to sit the paper without extra time, and must report the lateness. Once any candidate has left the room, a late arrival can no longer be admitted at all.
Absence and illness follow a separate route called special consideration, which is an application made by the centre, not by you directly. It requires evidence: medical certificates, hospital letters, statements from a doctor or a school counsellor. Deadlines are strict - JCQ requires applications within seven days of the last exam in that subject. Keep every appointment card and every prescription label; you cannot reconstruct evidence two months later.
5. Filling In the Answer Booklet Correctly |
A shocking number of marks and script-tracking problems come from the front cover. Write your candidate name, candidate number and centre number exactly as they appear on your statement of entry, sign the declaration, and write nothing else there. Doodles, jokes, complaints about the paper or messages to the examiner can all be read as an attempt to communicate, which is itself a reportable matter.
Use black ink for all answers, because scripts are scanned and pencil or light blue ink can fade or fail to register. Write your answers in the spaces provided, and if you make a mistake, put a single clean line through it rather than scribbling it out. Do not use correction fluid unless your board explicitly permits it, and never write in the margin, because margin content is typically excluded from scanning.
6. Extra Paper, Crossings Out and the "I Ran Out of Space" Problem |
If you need more space, raise your hand and ask an invigilator for a supplementary answer sheet. Three things must then be true: the sheet carries your candidate details, it clearly states which question it continues, and it is securely attached to your script before you leave. An unattached continuation sheet is one of the most common causes of an answer simply never being marked.
When you cross something out, cross it out once, legibly. Examiners can sometimes award method marks for crossed-out work if it is still readable, and they cannot if it is a black rectangle. Never erase, never tear out a page, and never write "see question paper" unless the paper explicitly instructs you to answer there.
7. Command Words, Units and Question Decoding |
Most "unfair" lost marks are actually fair. The command word tells you what kind of answer earns credit, and the mark allocation tells you how much detail is expected. A three-mark "explain" question requires three linked points; a one-mark "state" question requires one word. Writing four paragraphs for a two-mark question wastes time and adds no marks.
| Command word | 指令词 | What earns marks | 得分要点 |
| State / Give / Name | 写出 / 给出 | A single precise term, no explanation | 一个准确术语,无需解释 |
| Describe | 描述 | What happens, in sequence, no reasons | 说明现象与过程,不讲原因 |
| Explain | 解释 | Cause and effect, using "because" links | 因果链条,用"因为"连接 |
| Suggest | 提出 | A plausible idea applied to unfamiliar context | 在陌生情境中给出合理想法 |
| Evaluate / Discuss | 评价 / 讨论 | Both sides plus a justified conclusion | 正反两面加有依据的结论 |
Units are the cheapest marks in the whole paper and the easiest to lose. In physics and chemistry, an answer of 4.2 without a unit may lose the accuracy mark. In biology, writing "15" instead of "15 cm" is the same error. Train yourself to write the unit as part of the answer, not as an afterthought.
8. Show Your Working and Protect Your Method Marks |
Mark schemes are built from different mark types: M marks for a correct method, A marks for an accurate result, B marks for an independent correct statement. If you write only a final answer and it is wrong, there is nothing for the examiner to reward. If you write a clear method and make an arithmetic slip, you usually keep the method marks and benefit from error carried forward.
Total mark = Σ (M marks) + Σ (A marks) + Σ (B marks)
Guard the details that quietly cost A marks: premature rounding, giving a calculator display of 3.14159265 when the question asks for two significant figures, dropping a negative sign, and forgetting to convert units before substituting into a formula. If a question says "show that", you must show every intermediate step, because the answer is already printed and only the method can be marked.
9. Calculators, Formula Booklets and Equipment Rules |
Use a calculator you know and that complies with the regulations: no symbolic algebra, no stored text or programs, no wireless capability. Remove the case and place it on the floor, clear any stored memory before the exam if you have used the machine for practice, and bring a spare battery or a second approved calculator. Calculators may not be shared, and you may not borrow equipment once the exam has started.
Formula booklets and data sheets must be free of annotation. Underlining a formula in a printed booklet is usually treated as adding information and can be reported. Check the night before that you have everything on the permitted list: black pens, pencils, a ruler, an eraser, a sharpener, a protractor and compasses if required, and any approved access arrangement such as a word processor or a reader. If you have extra time or a separate room, confirm it with the exams officer a week in advance - access arrangements that are not set up cannot be created on the day.
10. Coursework, NEA and the AI Question | 课程作业、非考试评估与 AI 问题
Non-exam assessment carries the same malpractice rules as written papers. Plagiarism, collusion and impersonation all apply, and the growth of generative AI has added a fourth risk. Using an AI tool to generate text, solve problems or rewrite your analysis, and then submitting it as your own, is treated as malpractice in most boards' current policies, even if you edit the output afterwards.
Safe practice is documentation. Keep every draft with dates, keep your planning notes, keep your source list with page numbers, and if your school permits AI as a research aid, declare exactly how you used it in the required form. Never share your essay file, your data or your presentation slides with classmates, because a shared file can look identical to collusion from the outside. Submit before the internal deadline, not on it, so that a technical problem does not become an absence.
11. Invigilator Instructions and Emergency Situations |
Inside the room, the invigilator's word is final. Do not talk, do not turn around, do not pass anything to anyone, and do not look at another candidate's paper even accidentally. If you need to leave the room, raise your hand and wait; in most centres you will be escorted, you will not receive extra time, and you may be subject to a check on your return.
