📚 Exam Day Checklist: What to Prepare and Confirm Before You Enter the Hall |
Every year, thousands of candidates lose marks, time or even their whole grade not because they did not know the chemistry or the calculus, but because they forgot a candidate number, brought a forbidden watch, or arrived after the doors had closed. This checklist gathers the practical, frequently examined and frequently forgotten details for Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA, IB and AP candidates, and organises them into a sequence you can actually work through.
1. Read the Official Rules First | 先读官方考试规则
Before you buy anything or pack anything, read the current regulations published by your awarding body and by your own exam centre. Rules on calculators, watches, dictionaries and leaving the room change from session to session, and the version on a forum post from three years ago may be wrong.
Three documents matter most: the awarding body's "Notice to Candidates" or "Information for Candidates" booklet, the centre's own exam-day letter, and your statement of entry. If the three disagree, ask your exams officer in writing and keep the reply.
最重要的有三份文件:考试局的 "Notice to Candidates"(考生须知)或 "Information for Candidates" 手册、考点自己发的考试日通知,以及你的报考确认单(statement of entry)。
Do this at least two weeks before your first paper, not the night before. Anything that needs centre approval, such as a bilingual dictionary or a modified paper, cannot be arranged overnight.
2. Confirm Your Entry and Candidate Details |
Check your statement of entry line by line: your full name as it will appear on the certificate, your date of birth, the subject, the syllabus or specification code, the paper numbers, the tier (Foundation or Higher for some IGCSE subjects), and the exam dates and sessions.
Memorise, or write down, four numbers: centre number, candidate number, desk number and the paper code. These appear on every answer booklet you fill in, and writing them wrongly can delay or jeopardise your result.
Also confirm the practical details that are easy to miss:
- Which room or hall you are in, and whether your centre uses different buildings for different papers.
- Whether you have a morning and an afternoon paper on the same day, and how the supervised break works.
- Whether you have an exam clash with another subject, which the centre must resolve for you.
3. Documents, ID and What to Carry |
Most centres require a photo ID and your statement of entry or admission card. International candidates often need a passport or a national ID card; some centres accept a school ID with a photograph. Confirm which one your centre accepts, because turning up with the wrong document can mean being seated as an "unidentified candidate" while the problem is investigated.
Pack the night before and place everything in one bag next to the door:
- Photo ID (passport, national ID or accepted school ID).
- Statement of entry or admission card.
- Centre letter with room number, seat number and start times.
- A printed timetable of all your papers for the whole session.
4. Stationery and Equipment |
Bring more than you think you need, because you cannot borrow from a neighbour once the paper has started. Pens run out, pencils snap, and rulers get knocked off desks. A spare of everything costs almost nothing.
| Item | 物品 | Why it matters | 重要性 |
| Two or three black ballpoint pens (plus one blue if your centre permits) | 两三支黑色圆珠笔(若考点允许,再备一支蓝色) | Black ink scans clearly for online marking; blue is often allowed but check. |
| Two HB or 2B pencils and a soft eraser | 两支 HB 或 2B 铅笔和一块软橡皮 | Required for multiple-choice answer sheets and graphs. |
| Ruler, protractor, compasses, sharpener | 直尺、量角器、圆规、卷笔刀 | Mathematics and sciences only; check whether they are permitted on the paper. |
| Clear pencil case or transparent bag | 透明笔袋或透明袋 | Opaque cases are frequently banned at the desk. |
| Clear bottle of water with the label removed | 去掉标签的透明水瓶 | Labels may contain notes; bottles usually go on the floor. |
Leave the phone at home if you can, or hand it in at the start of every paper. This one rule catches more candidates than any other.
5. Calculator Rules |
Calculator rules differ by board and by paper, so treat this section as a prompt to check, not as a substitute for the regulations. The general principle across Cambridge International, Edexcel and Oxford AQA is that calculators must not be capable of symbolic algebra manipulation, symbolic differentiation or symbolic integration, and must not have a QWERTY keyboard or a graphic display able to connect to the internet.
Commonly banned features |
- CAS (computer algebra system) modes and symbolic solvers.
- Graphing calculators with programmable storage or wireless connectivity, unless the paper specifically permits them.
- Calculator cases, instruction cards and covers on the desk.
- Data stored in calculator memory, including notes and formulas.
- CAS(计算机代数系统)模式和符号求解功能。
Before the exam, reset the memory or clear stored data, replace the batteries, and practise with the exact calculator you will use. A calculator you have never used under time pressure is worse than no calculator.
6. Banned Items and Malpractice Risks |
Malpractice rules are strict and applied without sympathy. Possession of a mobile phone, smartwatch or any other electronic device during an examination is treated as malpractice even if the device is switched off and inside your bag. Many centres also ban all wristwatches because of smartwatch confusion, so check whether a plain analogue watch is still allowed.
Also keep these off your person and out of your desk:
- Notes, revision cards, textbooks or any printed material.
- Bilingual dictionaries, unless the centre has approved one in advance and the subject permits it.
- Earphones, earbuds, smart glasses and fitness trackers.
- Food, unless you have documented medical approval.
Never communicate with another candidate once you are inside the hall, not even to ask for a pen. Raise your hand and wait for an invigilator.
7. The Night Before and Morning Logistics |
The night before is not the time for a new topic. It is the time for logistics, a light review of summary notes, and sleep. Sleep is the single highest-return revision activity available to you in the final twenty-four hours.
A workable evening plan |
- Check the start time and the recommended arrival time, then work backwards to your alarm.
- Check the route and the transport timetable, including any planned engineering works or road closures.
- Pack the bag completely and put it by the door with your ID on top.
- Review summary sheets or formula lists for 30 to 45 minutes only, then stop.
- Set two alarms and charge your phone, or better, ask someone to wake you.
Aim to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early. Traffic, broken-down trains and forgotten folders are common; leaving home with no buffer turns a small delay into a missed paper.
8. Access Arrangements and Special Consideration |
If you have approved access arrangements, such as 25 percent extra time, a separate room, a reader, a scribe, a word processor or rest breaks, confirm in advance where you will sit and who will supervise you. These arrangements are approved in advance and cannot be created on the day.
Useful formulas to remember |
Extra time = paper duration × 0.25 (for a 25% arrangement)
Total time = 90 min × 1.25 = 112.5 min ≈ 1 h 52 min
If you are ill, injured, bereaved or affected by something serious in the days before or during the exams, tell your exams officer immediately. Centres can apply for special consideration, but only if they know, and only if the evidence is collected at the time.
If you feel unwell during a paper, raise your hand before you continue. Stopping early and reporting is usually better than struggling silently and reporting afterwards.
9. In the Exam Room: The First Fifteen Minutes |
The first fifteen minutes decide how calm the next two hours will be. Use them procedurally, not academically. Do the mechanical tasks first so that your working memory is free for the questions.
A fixed routine |
- Sit at the correct desk and check the desk number against your card.
- Put your ID on the desk where the invigilator can see it.
- Switch off your phone, hand it in if required, and take off any watch.
- Fill in the front of every answer booklet: centre number, candidate number, name, subject and paper code.
- Wait for the instruction to begin, then read the rubric and the number of questions to answer.
One quiet technical point: if the paper allows it, spend two minutes scanning the whole paper before writing. Knowing where the easy marks sit changes the order in which you should attempt the questions.
10. Time Management and Answering Strategy |
Time pressure is a design feature of these papers, not an accident. The standard planning rule of thumb is one mark per minute, plus a few minutes at the end for checking. A 75-mark paper therefore deserves roughly 75 minutes of writing time inside a 90-minute slot.
Writing time ≈ total marks × 1 min per mark
Check time = total paper time − writing time
Practical habits that protect marks |
- Write the question number clearly in the margin before each answer.
- Show working in calculation questions; method marks survive an arithmetic slip.
- Give units and correct significant figures, and round only at the end.
- Answer the question actually asked, using the command word: state, describe, explain, calculate, deduce, suggest, evaluate.
- If you run out of space, ask for an extra booklet and reference it clearly.
- Never leave a multiple-choice question blank, and never leave a structured question entirely empty.
11. Handling Panic and Difficult Questions |
A blank mind in the first minute of a hard question is normal physiology, not a sign that you will fail. Adrenaline narrows attention; the trick is to use a physical routine to bring the blood back to your reasoning brain.
A four-step recovery routine |
- Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. Repeat three times.
- Write down anything you do know: the relevant formula, the definition, the given data.
- Mark the question, move on, and bank the easier marks first.
- Return with five minutes left and attempt the first step only. Partial credit is real credit.
Watch the clock at fixed checkpoints rather than continuously. Checking every thirty seconds costs more time than it saves.
12. After the Paper and Final Checklist |
When the invigilator says stop, stop writing immediately. Put your pen down, close your booklet, and wait to be dismissed. Continuing to write after the instruction is malpractice and can cost you the paper.
Once outside, resist the urge to compare answers in detail or post about the paper online. Discussions of live exam content can be investigated as malpractice, and comparing answers only damages your mood before the next paper.
Final checklist |
| Statement of entry and photo ID packed |
| Centre number, candidate number, desk number written down | 考点号、考生号、座位号已写下 | ☐ |
| Timetable and room confirmed for today |
| At least three pens, two pencils, eraser, ruler |
| Calculator cleared, batteries replaced, permitted model |
| Phone switched off and handed in, watch removed |
| Access arrangements location confirmed, if applicable |
| Arrival time with 30 to 45 minutes of buffer |
Preparation is boring, and that is exactly why it works. The candidates who walk in calm are rarely the cleverest ones; they are the ones who checked the list twice and slept properly.
