📚 T Level Industry Placements: How They Are Arranged and What Employers Do | T Level
A T Level is not simply a classroom qualification. Every student on a T Level programme in England must complete a substantial industry placement with a real employer, and that placement has to be planned, supervised and evidenced from the first day to the last. Understanding how placements are arranged, who is responsible for what, and how employers fit into the picture is essential for students, parents, teachers and businesses alike.
1. What T Levels Are and Why Placements Are Compulsory | T Level
T Levels are two-year, level 3 technical qualifications for 16 to 19 year olds in England, introduced from September 2020 as the technical counterpart to A Levels. Each T Level combines a core component (the underpinning knowledge and concepts of the occupational area) with an occupational specialism, plus English, maths and digital skills where required. On top of that sits a compulsory industry placement.
The placement is compulsory because a T Level is designed to prove occupational competence, not just theoretical understanding. A student who can explain a wiring regulation but has never worked alongside a qualified electrician has not demonstrated the same level of readiness as one who has. The placement is therefore a completion requirement: without it, the T Level cannot be awarded, regardless of exam performance.
It is worth stressing what the placement is not. It is not a one-week work experience block, and it is not an informal visit. It is a structured, timetabled and assessed-in-context period of work that is written into the study programme and into the student's timetable from the outset.
2. The 45-Day Minimum: Hours, Timing and Delivery Models | 45
The legal and regulatory minimum for a T Level industry placement is 45 days, which the Department for Education translates into a minimum of 315 hours. Crucially, this is a floor and not a target. Many providers and employers run longer placements because the occupational specialism genuinely needs more time, especially in construction, engineering and health routes.
45 days × 7 hours per day = 315 hours minimum | 45
Schools and colleges choose a delivery model that fits the employer's operation and the student's timetable. The three recognised shapes are day release, block placement, and a mixed model that combines both. The choice affects how the employer plans supervision, how the student records evidence, and how quickly the placement fits into the normal rhythm of the business.
| Model 模式 | Typical shape 典型形式 | Best suited to 最适合 |
| Day release 每周一天 | 1 or 2 days per week across both years 两年中每周1至2天 | Local employers with steady workflow 业务流程稳定的本地雇主 |
| Block 集中式 | 6 to 9 weeks full time 连续6至9周全职 | Project-based work and sectors needing daily presence 项目型工作与需要每日在场的行业 |
| Extended 延长式 | Spread across the whole two years 分散于整个两年 | Small employers with seasonal peaks 存在季节高峰的小型雇主 |
Providers are expected to record hours accurately, because funding and completion depend on evidence that the 315-hour threshold has genuinely been met. Employers should therefore expect to confirm attendance and hours, usually through a signed log or an online placement platform.
3. How Schools and Colleges Recruit Host Employers |
Arranging a placement is the provider's responsibility, not the student's. Colleges and schools employ industry placement officers, employer engagement officers or placement coordinators whose job is to find, vet and support host employers. They build up a bank of suitable businesses and match students to them based on occupational specialism, travel distance and the student's career goals.
Recruitment routes commonly include existing apprenticeship and work experience networks, local chambers of commerce, employer boards and T Level ambassador networks, parents and alumni, and direct approaches to large regional employers. In sectors with acute skills shortages, providers may work with a single employer to host several students at once, which spreads the supervision burden.
Employers who are new to T Levels are usually offered a short briefing, a template placement plan and a named contact at the provider. This matters because the most common reason placements fail is not the student's performance but unclear expectations on the employer side.
4. The Employer's Role: Commitment, Planning and Delivery |
The employer is not a passive host. In practice the employer takes on four core duties: to agree a placement plan with real learning objectives, to provide a safe and properly supervised environment, to give the student genuine work with growing responsibility, and to provide feedback and confirm hours at the end. Everything else flows from these four.
A named supervisor or mentor is essential. This should be an experienced member of staff who has volunteered for the role, has time allocated for it, and understands that the student is there to learn rather than simply to fill a staffing gap. Good supervisors plan the week ahead, explain the reasoning behind tasks, and give feedback while the task is still fresh.
| Finding and vetting the host
| Placement plan and objectives 实习计划与目标 | Drafts and quality-assures 起草与质量把关 | Agrees realistic tasks 确认任务的可行性 |
| Day-to-day supervision 日常督导 | Supports and monitors 支持与监督 | Named supervisor on site 现场指定督导 |
| Safeguarding and health and safety 安全保障与健康安全 | Checks and advises 检查与指导 | Complies and risk-assesses 合规并做风险评估 |
| Confirming hours and outcome 确认时数与结果 | Records and reports 记录与上报 | Signs off attendance 签字确认出勤 |
5. Designing the Placement Plan and Learning Objectives |
Every placement should begin with a written placement plan. This document sets out the dates and hours, the supervisor's name, the health and safety arrangements, the tasks the student will undertake, and the specific knowledge and skills the placement is intended to develop. It is normally drafted by the provider, negotiated with the employer, and shared with the student and, where appropriate, the parents or carers.
Strong objectives are observable rather than vague. "Understand customer service" is weak; "handle at least twenty customer enquiries under supervision and record how each was resolved" is strong, because it can be evidenced and discussed at a review. Objectives should also map onto the occupational specialism so that the placement reinforces what is taught in college.
Progression matters. A well-designed plan moves the student from observation, to supported tasks, to independent work with a supervisor available. A placement that keeps a capable student photocopying for nine weeks wastes the employer's investment and fails the student.
6. Supervision, Mentoring and Day-to-Day Management |
Supervision is the single strongest predictor of a successful placement. The supervisor does not need to be with the student every minute, but the student must always know who to go to, how to ask for help, and what is expected that day. A short morning briefing and a five-minute end-of-day debrief transform the quality of the experience.
Mentoring goes beyond task instruction. A good mentor explains why the organisation does things a certain way, introduces the student to colleagues across departments, and helps them interpret workplace norms such as punctuality, dress, confidentiality and how to raise a concern. Many providers issue a short mentor handbook covering these points.
Employers should also know the escalation route. If a student repeatedly arrives late, appears unwell, or discloses something concerning, the supervisor contacts the provider's named link immediately rather than handling it alone. This protects both the student and the employer.
7. Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Compliance |
Because T Level students are normally 16 to 18 years old, they are treated as young people in the workplace and attract additional legal protection. The employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment that specifically considers the student's age, inexperience and any additional needs, and must share the findings with the provider before the placement starts.
Other compliance points include: adequate employer's liability insurance that covers placement students; a health and safety induction covering fire, first aid, accident reporting and site-specific hazards; and a safeguarding policy that the student has been shown. Where the role involves regulated activity, an enhanced DBS check may be required, and the provider normally arranges this.
Students must also know how to raise a concern. They should be given both the provider's contact and the employer's own whistleblowing or safeguarding route, and they should be told clearly that raising a concern will not damage their placement. Confidentiality works in both directions: the student must not share commercial information, and the employer must not share the student's personal information inappropriately.
8. Funding, Costs and Employer Incentives |
Employers are not required to pay T Level students a wage, although some choose to pay a travel allowance, lunch costs or an hourly rate. Where a student is paid, the payment does not usually create an employment relationship, but employers should confirm the position with their payroll and insurance advisers before making payments.
Providers receive funding intended to cover the cost of arranging and monitoring placements. At various points the government has also offered a £1,000 incentive payment to employers hosting eligible industry placements in priority routes, subject to eligibility rules and time limits. Because such schemes change, the provider is the reliable source of current information.
The real cost to an employer is time: supervision hours, induction, planning and reviews. Most employers report that the benefits outweigh this, because placements build a recruitment pipeline, bring fresh perspective, and let the business shape the skills it will need. Small employers should be realistic about capacity before committing.
9. Evidence, Progress Reviews and Assessment Links |
The industry placement itself is not graded, but it must be completed and evidenced. Students typically keep a placement log or journal recording dates, hours, tasks and reflections, alongside evidence such as photographs of work (where permitted), annotated documents, witness statements from the supervisor, and the outputs of any work-based project.
Standard practice is three formal reviews: a start review to confirm the plan and expectations, a midpoint review to check progress and adjust tasks if needed, and an end review to confirm hours and gather feedback. The midpoint review is the most important, because problems caught at week three are cheap to fix, while problems noticed at week nine usually cannot be.
Where the occupational specialism involves an employer-set project, employers may be consulted on the scenario or provide industry-standard context, which strengthens the link between the workplace and the qualification. Employers should not, however, be asked to mark or grade student work.
10. Flexible, Remote and Hybrid Placement Models |
Not every T Level route fits a traditional nine-to-five site placement. Digital, legal, finance and business routes often combine on-site days with remote work, and health and education routes may combine a single employer with short rotations across several settings.
Remote elements are permitted where they are genuinely part of the role and where supervision remains effective. Employers should ensure remote students have the right equipment, a clear daily check-in, and a named person available during working hours. A remote student with no scheduled contact is effectively unsupervised, which is a safeguarding risk.
Rotation models, where a student spends time with two or three employers, can widen experience but increase administration. They work best when one provider coordinator owns the overall plan, so the student is not left to negotiate between hosts.
11. Common Challenges and Practical Solutions |
The most frequent problems are predictable, which means they are preventable. Short-notice cancellations happen when a participating employer changes staffing or workload. The standard remedy is to keep a reserve employer and to build a small buffer into the timetable so a lost week can be recovered.
Students sometimes struggle with the transition from college to workplace, particularly around punctuality and communication. Supervisors who set expectations explicitly in week one, in writing, resolve most of this without conflict. Conversely, employers who assume students will "pick it up" usually end up frustrated.
Timekeeping and travel are practical barriers in rural areas, where a thirty-mile journey with two bus changes can make a placement impossible. Providers can sometimes help with travel costs or identify a nearer employer with a slightly different specialism. Employers in rural areas can also consider compressed days or longer blocks to reduce travel frequency.
