📚 The UK Turing Scheme: How to Apply for Overseas Study and Work Placement Funding |
Every year thousands of students at UK schools, sixth forms, colleges and universities spend part of their course studying or working abroad with money from the Turing Scheme, the government's post-Brexit alternative to Erasmus+. Yet many A-Level students never receive a penny of it, because they assume it is only for undergraduates - or because they do not realise that individuals cannot apply to the scheme directly. This guide explains how the funding is structured, who is eligible, what it actually pays for, and exactly what a school, college or student must do to secure a funded placement.
1. What the Turing Scheme Actually Is | 图灵计划究竟是什么
The Turing Scheme is the UK government's national international mobility programme for education and training. It is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and delivered through an appointed delivery partner, having launched in 2021 after the UK chose not to continue participating in Erasmus+ as a programme country.
Its purpose is simple: to give UK-based learners the chance to study, train or work abroad, and to bring those skills, language abilities and international contacts back home. It is deliberately global rather than European, with placements funded in well over 100 countries and territories, from Canada and Japan to Ghana, Vietnam and Brazil.
Crucially, it is an outbound-only scheme. Unlike Erasmus+, it does not fund students coming into the UK - it funds UK-based learners going out. It also spans all levels of education, not just universities: schools, further education colleges and vocational training providers can all hold Turing funding.
Finally, note that Turing is not a scholarship scheme. It does not pay tuition fees at a host university and it does not fund an entire year abroad. It is a mobility grant that subsidises the costs of going, and most participants are expected to top it up from savings, part-time work or other bursaries.
2. Eligibility: Who Can Be Funded |
Eligibility is based on enrolment, not nationality. You do not need a British passport to receive Turing funding - you need to be enrolled as a learner at a UK education provider that participates in a funded Turing project, and your placement must normally take place outside the UK.
The single most important rule is that funding flows to organisations, never to individuals. The DfE awards money to a lead organisation - a university, college, school, local authority, charity or consortium - and that organisation then selects participants and pays them. There is no personal application form on the Turing Scheme website.
Different education sectors have different eligibility rules, as the table below summarises.
| Route | 路径 | Who is eligible | 谁符合资格 | Typical minimum duration | 典型最短时长 |
|---|---|---|
| Higher education | 高等教育 | Registered students at UK universities; in recent rounds, recent graduates within about 12 months of graduating for work placements | 英国大学的注册学生;近几轮中,毕业约 12 个月内的应届毕业生可参加实习类项目 | 3 months (study) / 4 weeks (work) | 3 个月(学习)/ 4 周(实习) |
| Further education and vocational training | 继续教育与职业培训 | Learners enrolled at FE colleges and training providers, including Level 2 and Level 3 programmes | 在继续教育学院与培训机构注册的学习者,包括 Level 2 与 Level 3 课程 | Around 2 weeks | 约 2 周 |
| Schools | 中小学 | Pupils at participating schools, usually on group visits with staff | 参与项目学校的学生,通常随教师团队出行 | A few days upward | 数天起 |
Note also that a placement cannot generally take place in the country where you permanently reside, and the activity must be a genuine part of your learning programme rather than a holiday with a certificate attached.
3. Placement Types and Minimum Durations |
Turing funding supports two broad kinds of activity: study at a partner institution, and work placements with an employer or organisation. Many projects blend the two, for example a language course followed by an internship.
Study placements involve enrolment at a host university, college or school abroad, with a mobility agreement setting out the modules or activities to be completed. Work placements involve a real, supervised role with a host employer, and they are often the more
