📚 Safety First: A Parent's Guide to After-School Classes and Tutoring |
Most parents begin the search for an after-school class or a tutoring programme by comparing teachers, price, class size and timetable. Those things matter, but they are all secondary. A brilliant lesson in an unsafe building, with unvetted adults and no emergency plan, is not a good deal - it is an avoidable risk. This guide sets out a practical safety framework you can apply in one visit, one phone call and one short written agreement, so that learning always happens inside a safe environment.
1. Put Safety Before the Timetable |
A useful order of decision-making is: safety, then teaching quality, then convenience, then price. Safety is a gate, not a score. If a provider cannot answer basic questions about exits, supervision and first aid, no amount of exam results should persuade you to enrol your child. Convenience and price can be negotiated; an absent emergency plan cannot be fixed by a discount.
Set a personal rule before you start looking: no enrolment without a site visit and a written safety contact. This single rule removes most of the risk from the selection process, because providers who are careless about safety usually reveal it within the first ten minutes of a visit.
2. Verify Registration and Teaching Credentials |
Every legitimate provider can produce documents on request, without stalling. Ask to see the original documents rather than a photocopy, and check that the name on the licence matches the name on your receipt and contract. A mismatch is a serious warning sign, because it means the person collecting your money may not be the entity legally responsible for your child while they are on the premises.
| Document | 证件 | What to Check | 核查要点 | How to Verify | 验证方式 |
|---|---|---|
| Business or school licence | 营业执照 / 办学许可证 | Valid dates, registered address, permitted scope | 有效期、注册地址、许可范围 | Cross-check with the official public registry | 与官方公示系统比对 |
| Teacher qualification | 教师资格证 | Subject and stage match the class being taught | 学科与学段是否匹配所授课程 | Ask the teacher directly, not only the sales desk | 直接问授课老师,而非只问销售 |
| Fire safety inspection | 消防验收 / 检查记录 | Date within the required cycle, covers this floor | 在检查周期内、覆盖本楼层 | Look for the posted notice and the physical exits | 看墙上公示,同时看实体出口 |
Credentials are not paperwork. Each one maps to a specific protection: a licence means a regulator can be called, a qualification means the person teaching understands the curriculum, a fire notice means the building has been inspected, and insurance means an accident has a financial route rather than a dispute.
3. Inspect the Premises With Your Own Eyes |
Walk the route your child would walk in an emergency. Count the exits, check whether they open easily from the inside, and confirm that no exit is blocked by stacked chairs, boxes or a locked gate. In many real incidents, the failure is not the absence of an exit but the presence of a locked or obstructed one. If you cannot open an exit yourself, assume your child cannot either.
- Are stairwells clear, lit and free of storage? |
- Are corridors wide enough for two people to pass while running? |
- Are glass doors and low windows marked with visible film or strips? |
- Are heating pipes, radiators and electrical sockets protected or covered? |
- Is there a separate, lockable area for bags and coats so they do not block walkways? |
Take photographs of anything that worries you, with permission, and send them to the provider in writing afterwards. A provider that fixes the issue within days is a provider worth keeping. One that becomes defensive is telling you how it will behave after a real accident.
4. Drop-Off and Pick-Up: The Highest-Risk Ten Minutes |
More harm comes to children during transitions than during lessons. A child who leaves a classroom and cannot find the responsible adult is unsupervised in a public space, often near traffic. A written handover rule removes the ambiguity: the adult who receives the child must be named on a list, and no child leaves with an unlisted adult, however convincing that adult sounds.
- Is there a sign-in and sign-out record with time and signature? |
- Is there a photograph-based authorised pick-up list? |
- Is there a password or code phrase for last-minute changes? |
- Does a staff member physically stand at the door, or is the door simply left open? |
- For walking-home children, is there a confirmed route and a check-in message? |
Agree in advance what happens if you are late. A clear late-pickup policy - who stays, where the child waits, how you are contacted - protects your child from being left alone with the lights being switched off.
5. Staff Vetting and Safeguarding Policy |
Ask how staff are recruited, not just how they are trained. A responsible provider can explain its background checks, reference requirements and probation supervision. It should also have a named safeguarding lead whose role is to receive concerns about any adult's behaviour towards a child, and a written procedure for what happens next.
A simple test: ask the front desk, "If my child tells me a teacher behaved inappropriately, who do I contact and what happens in the next 48 hours?" If the answer is vague, the policy does not exist in practice. Policies that live only in a binder never protect anyone.
- Two-adult rule for any one-to-one contact |
- Open-door or glass-panel policy for tutorial rooms |
- Written code of conduct signed by every adult |
- No private messaging between staff and students |
- Clear procedure for reporting and recording concerns |
6. Supervision Ratios and Class Size |
Class size and supervision ratio are different numbers, and the ratio is the one that matters for safety. A class of 20 with one teacher is a teaching ratio of 20 to 1; if a second adult is present only during breaks, your child's real supervision ratio changes throughout the session. Always ask for the adult count present at every stage of the lesson.
24 students ÷ 2 adults = 12 : 1
For younger children and for any activity involving equipment, heat, chemicals or physical movement, a lower ratio is required. For ages roughly 6 to 9, many providers aim for about 8 to 1 or better during practical work; for ages 10 to 13, about 10 to 1; for teenagers in a classroom setting, about 15 to 1. Treat these as starting points for a conversation, not as universal law, and always ask what happens when a teacher is ill or absent.
7. Health, Hygiene, Allergies and First Aid |
Safety planning must include medical reality. Ask whether at least one adult on site holds a current first aid certificate, where the kit is stored, and whether it is checked and restocked on a schedule. Find out if staff are trained to use an adrenaline auto-injector, and whether your child's allergy information is displayed where it is needed - in the room, not in a filing cabinet.
- Emergency contacts recorded and reachable within minutes |
- Written consent for emergency medical treatment |
- Allergy and medication list visible to all supervising staff |
- Clean drinking water and hand-washing facilities |
- Toilets supervised appropriately for the age group |
Also agree how illness is handled. Children should not be sent to a class with a fever, and a provider should have a room and an adult available to isolate and comfort a child who becomes unwell while waiting for a parent.
8. Online Tutoring: Screens, Recording and Platform Rules |
Online lessons move the risk from corridors to cameras. Insist that lessons take place on a platform the provider controls, with a waiting room, a stable join link and an adult able to enter the session at any time. Ask directly whether sessions are recorded, who can view the recording, how long it is stored and when it is deleted. Recording can protect your child; unmanaged recording can endanger them.
- Camera on for the teacher, and a clear policy on the student's camera |
- No one-to-one private chat channels outside the platform |
- Parent able to observe or join without prior warning |
- Lesson links unique per session, not reused for weeks |
- Written rule on screenshots and screen sharing |
Set your own household rules as well: the device stays in a shared room, the door stays open, and your child knows they can end a call and come to you at any time without being told off.
9. Data Privacy and Your Child's Personal Information |
Enrolment forms collect a surprising amount: full name, date of birth, school, address, photographs, medical notes and sometimes identity documents. Ask why each field is needed, who inside the organisation can see it, whether it is shared with third parties, and how it is destroyed when your child leaves. Consent given at enrolment is not consent forever.
- Refuse unnecessary ID documents and keep copies to a minimum |
- Ask for photo and video consent to be separate and revocable |
- Confirm no marketing use of your child's image without fresh consent |
- Keep your own copy of everything you sign |
10. Equipment, Labs and Practical Subjects |
Science, art, music, cooking and sports classes carry physical hazards that a maths tutorial does not. Ask whether experiments are demonstrated before students attempt them, whether personal protective equipment is provided and enforced, and whether a teacher has been trained for that specific practical work rather than simply being a subject graduate.
2 H₂ + O₂ → 2 H₂O ΔH < 0 (exothermic 放热)
NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l) ΔH = −57.3 kJ mol⁻¹
Even a demonstration like the one above involves a flame, glassware and a sudden temperature change. A safe provider will have a heatproof mat, safety goggles for every observer, a fire blanket within reach and a clear rule that students stand at a marked distance during demonstrations.
- Goggles and gloves sized for children, not adults |
- Chemicals stored locked, labelled and out of student reach |
- Sports equipment inspected for cracks, loose bolts and worn grips |
- Electrical equipment tested and cables not crossing walkways |
11. Your Question Checklist and Warning Signs |
Bring the same short list to every provider and compare the answers side by side. Consistency of answers matters as much as content: a provider that gives different accounts to two parents is a provider with an unclear internal system. Write the answers down during the visit, because memory softens objections within a day.
|---|---|
| Refusal to allow a site visit before payment | 付款前拒绝实地参观 | You cannot assess what you cannot see | 看不到就无法评估 |
| Locked or blocked emergency exits | 紧急出口上锁或被堵 | The single most common fatal failure | 最常见也最致命的隐患 |
| No named person for safety questions | 没有明确的安全负责人 | No owner means no accountability | 无人负责等于无人负责 |
| Anyone can collect the child | 任何人都能接走孩子 | Removes the last line of defence | 等于撤掉最后一道防线 |
| Private messaging with students | 与学生私下单线联系 | Removes all oversight from contact | 使接触完全脱离监督 |
| No written accident or complaint procedure | 无书面事故与投诉流程 | Problems are hidden rather than solved | 问题会被掩盖而非解决 |
If something goes wrong, escalate in writing and keep a dated record: the person you spoke to, what was said, and what was promised. Start with the provider's safeguarding lead, then the centre manager, then the relevant regulator or local education authority. Written records turn a disagreement into a documented process, which is what protects the next child as well as yours.
12. Put It in Writing and Review It Every Term |
A safety agreement does not need to be long. One page covering the pick-up list, emergency contacts, medical information, recording consent and the named safety contact is enough. Both sides sign it, both sides keep a copy, and it is reviewed at the start of every term or whenever anything changes.
- Re-check exits and evacuation routes each term |
- Update medical and allergy information at every enrolment |
- Confirm the current staff list and who is trained in first aid |
- Re-ask about data storage and delete old consents |
Finally, talk to your child. Teach them three sentences: where the exit is, who the safe adult is, and that they may always say no and come to you. Children who know these three things are safer in every classroom they will ever enter, and the conversation costs nothing.
