1. Quantitative Skills in the WJEC Specification | WJEC

WJEC A-Level Business assesses quantitative skills across all units, but calculations are rarely tested in isolation. Almost every numerical question is attached to a short case study, and the examiner expects you to select the figures given, show your working clearly and then interpret the result in the context of that business.

WJEC A-Level

Marks are normally split between method and interpretation. A typical four-mark question awards two marks for correct working and two marks for a judgement about what the figure means, for example whether an investment should proceed, whether liquidity is a concern, or whether a cost increase will erode profit.

You should always write the formula first, substitute the figures, then round appropriately. Percentages are usually given to one or two decimal places, ratios to two decimal places or as x:1, and money to the nearest pound or thousand pounds depending on the size of the figures.

Contribution and break-even | 边际贡献与盈亏平衡 Decide whether to launch a product | 判断是否推出新产品
Investment appraisal | 投资评估 Choose between two projects | 在两个项目间做选择

2. Costs, Contribution and Profit |

Contribution is the amount each unit sold leaves behind to pay fixed costs and then generate profit. It is calculated as selling price per unit minus variable cost per unit. Total contribution is contribution per unit multiplied by the number of units sold, and profit is total contribution minus total fixed costs.

Contribution per Unit = Selling Price per Unit − Variable Cost per Unit

Profit = Total Contribution − Total Fixed Costs

Worked example: a firm sells at £25 per unit with variable costs of £15 and fixed costs of £60,000. Contribution per unit is £25 − £15 = £10. Selling 8,000 units gives total contribution of £80,000, so profit is £80,000 − £60,000 = £20,000.

ue, which is useful when a business sells several products at different prices. Here it is £10 ÷ £25 = 0.4, or 40%, meaning 40 pence of every pound of revenue contributes towards fixed costs.

3. Break-Even Point and Margin of Safety |

Break-even analysis identifies the sales volume at which total revenue exactly equals total costs, so , resulting in zero profit is zero. Beyond that point every additional unit sold adds contribution directly to profit, which is why break-even output is often described as the survival threshold of the business.

Break-Even Point (units) = Total Fixed Costs ÷ Contribution per Unit

Using fixed costs of £40,000, a selling price of £15 and a variable cost of £7, contribution per unit is £8 and break-even output is £40,000 ÷ £8 = 5,000 units. Break-even revenue is simply 5,000 units × £15 = £75,000.

safety is 6,500 − 5,000 = 1,500 units, which as a percentage is 1,500 ÷ 6,500 × 100 = 23.1%. Profit at this level is 1,500 units × £8 = £12,000.

Margin of Safety (%) = (Actual Sales Units − Break-Even Units) ÷ Actual Sales Units × 100

A low margin of safety signals vulnerability: a small fall in demand, a price cut by a rival or a rise in variable costs could push the business into loss. A high margin of safety gives managers room to absorb shocks without making losses.

4. Break-Even Charts and Sensitivity to Change |

A break-even chart plots total revenue and total costs against output. The fixed cost line is horizontal, total costs rise from that line, total revenue rises from the origin, and the intersection of the revenue and total cost lines is the break-even point. The vertical gap between the two lines shows profit or loss at each output level.

Changes in any variable shift the break-even point. If the variable cost rises from £7 to £9, contribution per unit falls to £6 and break-even output becomes £40,000 ÷ £ 67 units. The total cost line becomes steeper and the break-even point moves to the right.

If instead the selling price rises to £17 while variable cost stays at £7, contribution becomes £10 and break-even falls to £40,000 ÷ £10 = 4,000 units. A rise in fixed costs to £50,000 would raise break-even to 5,000 ÷ 8 × 10 = 6,250 units at the original £8 contribution.

When interpreting a chart, always link the movement to the case study: a steeper total cost line might reflect higher raw material prices, while a shallower revenue line might reflect discounting to win market share. Evaluation marks come from weighing this against non-financial factors such as brand image and capacity.

5. Profitability Ratios: GPM, NPM and ROCE |

Profitability ratios compare profit with revenue or capital to judge how efficiently a business converts sales into profit. The gross profit margin shows trading efficiency before overheads, while the net profit margin shows the profit left after all expenses have been deducted.

Gross Profit Margin (%) = Gross Profit ÷ Revenue × 100

Net Profit Margin (%) = Net Profit ÷ Revenue × 100

ROCE (%) = Operating Profit ÷ Capital Employed × 100

Worked example: revenue £500,000, cost of sales £300,000, expenses £120,000. Gross profit is £200,000, so the gross margin is £200,000 ÷ £500,000 × 100 = 40%. Net profit is £80,000, giving a net margin of £80,000 ÷ £500,000 × 100 = 16%.
