📚 Which Subjects Count Towards UK Qualifications |
Every year thousands of students in England and Wales discover, too late, that one of their chosen subjects does not count towards the qualification framework, the school performance measure, or the university course they were targeting. The rules differ at GCSE, at A-Level, and at the point of university admission, and they differ again between the English Baccalaureate, Attainment 8, and individual university policy.
This article sets out, step by step, which subjects are counted, which are excluded, and which are merely "less preferred". It ends with a practical eligibility checklist you can work through before you commit to any combination.
1. Why Subject Eligibility Matters |
Subject eligibility is not a single rule but three separate rule sets operating at the same time: the statutory framework for school accountability, the qualification framework recognised by Ofqual and UCAS, and the admissions policy of each individual university department.
A subject can be a valid, Ofqual-regulated qualification and still be excluded from the EBacc measure or refused as one of your three A-Levels by a selective university. Validity, recognition and preference are three different things.
Getting this wrong is costly. A student who takes three "non-preferred" A-Levels may find that competitive courses in medicine, economics or engineering are effectively closed, even with excellent grades.
2. The UK Qualification Landscape at a Glance |
Before checking lists, you need to know which layer you are operating in. GCSEs and A-Levels are general qualifications regulated by Ofqual. BTECs, Cambridge Technicals and T Levels are applied or technical qualifications. The IB Diploma and Scottish Highers are separate frameworks with their own subject rules.
| Layer / 层级 | Who sets the rule / 规则制定方 | What it controls / 控制对象 |
| School accountability | Department for Education (DfE) | EBacc, Attainment 8, Progress 8 |
| Qualification validity | Ofqual | Whether a qualification exists at all |
| University admission | Each university / department | Required and preferred subjects |
The key insight is that a subject can be fully "counted" at one layer and completely ignored at another. Always ask: counted by whom, and for what purpose?
3. The English Baccalaureate: Five Subject Pillars | 英国文凭 EBacc:五大科目支柱
The English Baccalaureate is not a certificate and not a qualification. It is a performance measure introduced in 2010 that records the percentage of pupils in a school who achieve grade 9-4 (formerly A*-C) in a specific set of subjects at GCSE.
| 1 | English Language and English Literature | Both can be counted, one towards the core requirement |
| 2 | Mathematics | Single slot; Further Maths GCSE does not replace it |
| 3 | Sciences or Computer Science | Core + Additional, Triple Science, or Computer Science |
| 4 | History or Geography | One of the two is required |
| 5 | Modern or Classical Language | French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Latin, Greek, community languages |
To be recorded as achieving the EBacc, a pupil must reach grade 4 or above in all five pillars. Pupils who miss any single pillar are not counted in the school's EBacc percentage, regardless of how strong their other grades are.
4. Subjects That Do Not Count Towards the EBacc | 不计入 EBacc 的科目
Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Business Studies, Design and Technology and Media Studies are all valid GCSEs, but none of them fills a pillar of the EBacc.
Applied GCSEs and short-course GCSEs are also excluded. Functional Skills qualifications in English and Mathematics may satisfy a funding condition for post-16 study but never count towards the EBacc.
This is one of the most common misreadings: a student may hold nine or ten good GCSEs and still be recorded as not having achieved the EBacc, because none of them was a language or a humanity.
5. EBacc Inside Attainment 8 and Progress 8 | EBacc 在 Attainment 8 与 Progress 8 中的位置
Attainment 8 uses eight subject slots, but English and Mathematics are double-weighted, producing ten scored entries in total. Three of the slots are reserved for EBacc subjects and three are "open" slots.
Attainment 8 = (English × 2) + (Maths × 2) + (3 EBacc subjects) + (3 open subjects)
The three open slots can be filled by almost any Ofqual-regulated qualification, including Art, Music, PE or a vocational award. This is where subjects that do not count towards the EBacc still have value for the school's data.
Progress 8 then compares each pupil's Attainment 8 score with the score of pupils nationally who had the same prior attainment at the end of primary school. The EBacc is therefore embedded inside a wider calculation, not a standalone requirement.
6. A-Level "Facilitating Subjects": What the List Really Meant | A-Level "促进性科目":这份清单的真实含义
From 2011 to 2019 the Russell Group published a list of "facilitating subjects" - A-Levels that were said to keep the most university degree options open. The list had roughly nine entries and was widely, and often wrongly, treated as a legal requirement.
- Mathematics and Further Mathematics /
- English Literature /
- Physics, Chemistry, Biology /
- Geography / 地理
- History / 历史
- Modern Languages (French, German, Spanish and others) /
- Classical Languages (Latin, Classical Greek) /
The Russell Group retired the term in 2019 and replaced it with the Informed Choices website, which lists subject requirements by degree subject rather than publishing a single list. Many schools, however, still use the old list when advising students.
The practical takeaway: treat the facilitating subjects as a useful default, not as a rule. Economics, Psychology, Computer Science and Politics are all perfectly strong A-Levels, but they are not on the historical list.
Some A-Levels are regularly listed as "not accepted" or "not preferred" as one of the three main subjects. The most frequently named are General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills, Citizenship Studies and Global Perspectives.
Others are not excluded but carry lower priority at some institutions. The London School of Economics, for example, publishes a "non-preferred" list that includes Business Studies, Accounting, Law, Media Studies, Art and Design, Drama, Film Studies, Physical Education and Religious Studies when taken as one of three A-Levels.
Other selective universities publish "preferred" subject lists of 30 or more A-Levels. Subjects not on the list are not automatically rejected, but a candidate may be considered at a disadvantage when places are competitive.
Why does this matter for eligibility? Because the number of acceptable A-Levels is usually fixed at three. If one of your three sits on a non-preferred list, you effectively have only two.
8. Overlapping Subjects and Combination Rules |
Some combinations are treated as overlapping and may be counted as fewer than the number of qualifications submitted. Mathematics and Further Mathematics are the classic case; Biology and Human Biology is another.
The good news for most applicants is that the majority of universities do accept Mathematics and Further Mathematics as two distinct A-Levels, including for mathematics, engineering and economics degrees.
Required 3 subjects + Overlapping pair treated as 1 → Effective 2 subjects
Other rules to check: whether an A-Level in your native language is counted (some universities exclude it), and whether a subject taken at AS Level counts towards the three (usually it does not after the linear reform).
Two students with identical grades can therefore end up with different eligibility simply because of the combination on their certificate, not the quality of their results.
9. Vocational and Applied Qualifications: BTEC, CTEC and T Levels | 职业与应用型资格:BTEC、CTEC 与 T Level
BTEC National Extended Diplomas, Cambridge Technicals and T Levels are recognised qualifications and carry UCAS Tariff points. They are counted for funding and for many university courses, but they do not count towards a school's EBacc measure.
T Levels, introduced from 2020, are two-year technical programmes equivalent in size to three A-Levels and include a compulsory industry placement of at least 315 hours.
Some highly selective universities accept a full BTEC Extended Diploma with Distinction grades for certain courses, while others require a mixed programme of one or two A-Levels alongside. Always check the specific entry profile, not the general statement.
Mixed programmes create a further eligibility question: which of the two qualifications fills which requirement? A BTEC in Applied Science may satisfy a science requirement for one course and not for another.
10. Course-Specific Requirements: Medicine, Engineering, Economics and Law |
For competitive degrees, the eligibility list is decided by the department, not the university. The table below shows the pattern most commonly seen across UK institutions in 2024-2026 entry cycles.
| Medicine | Chemistry, plus one of Biology, Physics, Maths | Biology (for many schools a second science is compulsory) |
| Engineering | Mathematics and Physics | Further Mathematics |
| Economics | Mathematics | Further Mathematics, Economics |
| Law | No fixed subject, but a strong academic combination | History, English Literature, a language |
Note that Economics A-Level is rarely required for an Economics degree, while Mathematics almost always is. This surprises many students who assume the matching name is the matching requirement.
For Law, the absence of a required subject means the combination itself is the assessment. A mix of three "non-preferred" subjects will usually struggle at the most selective departments.
11. GCSE Threshold Rules That Follow You Post-16 | 16 岁后仍将跟随你的 GCSE 门槛规则
In England, students who have not achieved grade 4 in GCSE English or Mathematics must continue to study those subjects post-16 and must keep retaking the examinations until they reach grade 4, or age 18.
Students who achieved grade 3 must continue to study towards grade 4; those who achieved grade 2 or below must study towards grade 3 and then grade 4. These hours are added on top of the three or four A-Levels or BTECs.
Separately, university courses sometimes impose GCSE conditions that are not advertised prominently. Medical schools commonly require grade 6 or above in Mathematics and English, and some require a science GCSE at the same level.
These thresholds are a qualification issue, not a subject issue: the subject counts, but your grade in it may still block the route.
12. A Pre-Selection Eligibility Checklist |
Work through the following list before you sign your option form. Each question corresponds to a layer of rules described above, and each has a different official source of truth.
- Do I have at least one language and one humanity for the EBacc?
- Are all my GCSE options Ofqual-regulated GCSEs rather than applied or short-course versions?
- Do my three A-Levels avoid the General Studies and Critical Thinking trap?
- Do any of my three A-Levels appear on a university's non-preferred list?
- Is my combination free of overlapping pairs that may be counted as one? /
- Does the specific course page list the required subjects, not just the university's general policy? /
- If I am mixing A-Levels with BTEC or T Level, does each subject satisfy its intended requirement?
- Am I on track for grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Mathematics?
- Have I checked whether my native language A-Level is excluded by any target university? A-Level?
- Have I re-checked all of the above within the current admissions cycle? /
