📚 Overall Star Ratings and Five-Point Category Scores |
Rating systems are everywhere: hotel star grades, restaurant guides, app-store scores, airline reviews and even internal quality audits. Almost all of them share one structure - a headline symbol, usually a star rating out of five, supported by a set of category scores on a five-point scale that explain how that headline was reached. Understanding how the two levels relate is a core skill in Business Studies, Travel and Tourism, Geography fieldwork and Research Methods.
1. Why Rating Systems Matter |
A rating system is a structured method for converting qualitative judgements about a service, product or organisation into a comparable score or symbol. Its purpose is to compress complex, multi-dimensional quality into a signal that a non-expert can understand at a glance. Without such systems, consumers would have to rely on marketing claims, personal recommendations or expensive trial and error.
Star ratings are used by tourism boards, hotel groups, restaurant guides, app stores, e-commerce platforms and internal quality teams. They work because they combine standardised criteria with human or algorithmic judgement, and because the resulting symbol is easy to publish, compare and rank across many providers.
For examination purposes the topic links three ideas: measurement (turning quality into numbers), aggregation (combining those numbers into one grade) and evaluation (judging how reliable and valid that grade really is). Examiners frequently ask candidates to justify a scale, calculate a weighted total, or criticise a grading scheme.
2. Overall Star Rating and Five-Point Category Scores |
An overall star rating is a single summary grade, normally expressed as 1 to 5 stars, sometimes with half-stars for finer distinctions. It is designed for quick comparison and is widely used in marketing, because a symbol travels faster than a report. It states how good the establishment is judged to be overall, but not why.
Five-point category scores break that judgement down into dimensions such as cleanliness, staff service, facilities, food quality, value for money and sustainability. Each dimension receives a score from 1 to 5. The category scores therefore provide the explanation behind the headline star and reveal strengths and weaknesses that the star alone conceals.
The two levels serve different audiences. The overall star is consumer-facing and intended for comparison; the category scores are an operational and diagnostic tool for managers, inspectors and auditors. A hotel scoring 5 overall but only 2 for sustainability needs a very different improvement plan from one scoring 5 overall but only 2 for cleanliness.
3. Designing the Five-Point Scale |
A five-point scale is an ordinal rating scale: the numbers show order (5 is better than 4), but the gap between 1 and 2 is not necessarily the same as the gap between 4 and 5. This is why exam answers that treat a 1-to-5 score as a precise interval measurement can be challenged, even though means are routinely calculated in practice.
The scale only becomes usable when each point carries a written descriptor, often called an anchor or a rubric. Anchors reduce subjective interpretation, improve inter-rater reliability and make feedback actionable, because a score of 3 can be traced to observable evidence.
| Score | Label | Typical descriptor for a hotel bedroom |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Excellent | Spotless throughout, premium materials, no defects, extra touches evident |
| 4 | Good | Clean and well maintained, minor wear only, all advertised features working |
| 3 | Acceptable | Functional and basically clean, visible wear, one feature not working |
| 2 | Poor | Cleaning lapses, damaged fittings, several features faulty |
| 1 | Unacceptable | Hygiene risk, safety concern or unusable facilities |
Scale length is a design choice. A five-point scale is short enough to be used consistently but long enough to show meaningful differences. An even number of points forces assessors to choose a side and removes the neutral midpoint; an odd number allows a genuine 'average' response. Seven or ten points give finer discrimination but increase disagreement between assessors.
4. From Category Scores to an Overall Star |
The simplest aggregation is the unweighted mean: add the category scores and divide by the number of categories. This treats every dimension as equally important, which is easy to explain and defend, but it can produce an overall grade that no consumer would accept - for example, high scores for facilities and entertainment masking a serious hygiene failure.
A weighted mean assigns each category a weight that reflects its importance to the scheme's stated purpose. The weighted total is then converted into a star band using published thresholds.
Weighted Score = Σ (wᵢ × sᵢ) ÷ Σ wᵢ
In this expression sᵢ is the score awarded to category i and wᵢ is its weight. A high weight amplifies both good and bad performance, so the choice of weights is itself a value judgement that should be justified and published.
| Weighted score | Star band | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 4.50 – 5.00 | ★★★★★ 5 stars | Exceptional, international standard |
| 3.75 – 4.49 | ★★★★ 4 stars | High quality, consistently strong |
| 3.00 – 3.74 | ★★★ 3 stars | Solid, meets expectations |
| 2.25 – 2.99 | ★★ 2 stars | Basic, noticeable weaknesses |
| Below 2.25 | ★ 1 star | Below acceptable minimum |
5. Weighting, Rounding and Boundary Rules |
Weights must be transparent and defensible. A scheme aimed at business travellers might weight cleanliness and service heavily; a family-oriented scheme might weight safety and facilities. If weights are hidden, providers cannot tell what to improve and the rating loses credibility.
Rounding rules create boundary problems. A weighted score of 3.749 and one of 3.750 fall into different star bands if the threshold is 3.75, even though the difference is trivial. Good schemes therefore publish the exact rule - for example, round to two decimal places, then apply thresholds using 'greater than or equal to'.
Other common rules include a minimum-score condition (no category may fall below 2, regardless of the average), an automatic fail for health and safety breaches, and a validity period of two to three years before reassessment. These rules show that a rating scheme is a policy instrument, not merely a calculation.
6. Worked Example: One Hotel, Two Schemes |
Consider a city hotel assessed on six categories. Scheme A is a business-traveller scheme that weights cleanliness and service at 4 each, while facilities, food, value and sustainability carry a weight of 1. Scheme B is a simple unweighted mean of the same six scores.
| Category | Score / 5 | Weight (Scheme A) | Weighted contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanliness | 5 | 4 | 20 |
| Staff service | 5 | 4 | 20 |
| Facilities | 3 | 1 | 3 |
| Food quality | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| Value for money | 3 | 1 | 3 |
