📚 Sustainability Indicators Enter the QS World University Rankings for the First Time in the 20th Edition | 可持续性指标首次加入第20版QS世界大学排名
Every year produces a new set of league tables, but only rarely does a league table change what it actually measures. In its twentieth edition, released in June 2023 and covering the 2023/24 admissions cycle, the QS World University Rankings did exactly that: for the first time, sustainability became a scored indicator, carrying 5 per cent of a university's total result. For A-Level students choosing courses, writing personal statements, or studying sustainability in Geography and Economics, this shift is more than ranking trivia - it is a case study in how measurement shapes behaviour.
1. The 20th Edition at a Glance |
The 20th edition of the QS World University Rankings was published on 27 June 2023. It covered approximately 1,500 institutions across 104 locations, making it the largest edition in the ranking's history at that point. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took first place for the twelfth consecutive year, followed by the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.
What made this edition distinctive was not the top of the table but the structure of the table itself. Three new indicators entered the methodology, and existing weights were redistributed. The result was a ranking that attempted to price in something previously treated as reputation alone: environmental and social performance.
2. The Three New Indicators |
QS added three indicators simultaneously in the 20th edition. Together they account for 15 per cent of a university's total score, which is a substantial share in a methodology that had barely changed for years.
- Sustainability (5%) - measures environmental and social sustainability performance, drawn from QS's dedicated sustainability dataset.
- Employment Outcomes (5%) - measures how well graduates perform in the labour market, including employability, career impact and alumni achievement. |
- International Research Network (5%) - measures the proportion and diversity of internationally co-authored research publications, aligned with the idea of cross-border research partnerships.
Notice the logic: the two indicators that lost weight - academic reputation and faculty-student ratio - are both input- or prestige-based, while the new indicators lean towards outcomes and external impact. That rebalancing is the real story of the 20th edition.
3. Weightings Before and After | 权重前后对比
The table below compares the indicator weights in the 19th edition (2023) with those in the 20th edition (2024). Each weight is a percentage of the total score, and each must sum to 100.
| Citations per Faculty |
| International Faculty Ratio |
| International Students Ratio |
| Sustainability | 可持续性 | not scored | 未计分 | 5% | new | 新增 |
| Employment Outcomes | 就业成果 | not scored | 未计分 | 5% | new | 新增 |
| International Research Network | 国际研究网络 | not scored | 未计分 | 5% | new | 新增 |
The arithmetic of a composite score is simple. If wᵢ is the weight of indicator i and sᵢ is the university's normalised score on that indicator, then:
Total = Σ (wᵢ × sᵢ), where Σ wᵢ = 100%
A 10 percentage-point reduction in the academic reputation weight is therefore not cosmetic. For a university whose reputation score is far above its sustainability score, the composite total must fall; for a university with strong sustainability metrics but a modest reputation, the total rises. Rankings are zero-sum games played with weighted averages.
4. What the Sustainability Indicator Actually Measures |
QS describes the sustainability indicator in the World University Rankings as being derived from its dedicated sustainability assessment, which evaluates both environmental and social performance. In simplified, illustrative form, the logic can be written as a two-part composite:
Sustainability ≈ ½ × Environmental score + ½ × Social score
This structure matters because it prevents "sustainability" from being reduced to carbon emissions alone. A university with a carbon-neutral campus but poor staff equality metrics does not automatically score well; neither does a university with excellent equality records but no environmental strategy.
For students, the practical implication is that sustainability scores reflect institutional strategy, not individual lifestyle. They describe what an institution does at scale - what it teaches, what it researches, how it operates, and whom it serves.
5. The Environmental Pillar Explained |
The environmental dimension of the sustainability assessment is typically organised around three broad areas. Each one asks a different question about the institution.
- Sustainable institutions | 可持续的机构 - Does the university manage its own estate responsibly? This covers campus energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water management, sustainable procurement, and whether the endowment is invested in fossil fuels or in low-carbon assets.
- Sustainable education | 可持续的教育 - Does the university teach sustainability? This includes the availability of sustainability-related modules and degrees, the proportion of graduates who acquire green skills, and institutional commitments to education for sustainable development.
- Sustainable research | 可持续的研究 - Does the university produce research that addresses environmental challenges? This is measured through publication output and citation impact in sustainability-related fields, including work linked to climate science, clean energy, biodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Within a geography framework, these three areas map neatly onto the idea of scale: institution-level operations, individual-level learning, and society-level knowledge production.
6. The Social Pillar Explained |
The social dimension is often the part students overlook, yet it carries roughly half the sustainability score. It asks whether a university improves the society it sits within.
- Equality | 平等 - gender and minority representation among students and staff, access initiatives, disability support, and pay-gap transparency.
- Knowledge exchange | 知识交流 - whether research and expertise reach beyond campus, through public engagement, partnerships with local government, schools and industry.
- Employability and opportunities | 就业与机会 - graduate outcomes, career services and the extent to which the university widens access to professional employment.
- Health and wellbeing | 健康与福祉 - student mental health provision, sports and wellbeing facilities, and research contributions to public health.
- Impact of education | 教育的影响力 - the long-run social value of the university's teaching, including alumni contributions to education, health and civic life.
This structure makes the sustainability indicator unusual: it is one of the few metrics in the ranking that explicitly rewards universities for reducing inequality rather than merely producing prestige.
7. Scoring and Methodology |
Raw indicator values are not directly comparable. A university with 60,000 students will produce different absolute numbers from one with 6,000, so QS standardises each indicator before weighting it. The standard tool is the z-score:
z = (x − μ) ÷ σ
Here x is the university's raw value, μ is the mean across the ranked institutions, and σ is the standard deviation. A positive z-score means the university is above average on that indicator; a negative score means it is below. Because z-scores are dimensionless, they can be combined across indicators measured in completely different units - survey responses, citation counts, staff headcounts.
The data sources behind the sustainability indicator include institutional data submissions, bibliometric databases such as Scopus, and external datasets covering environmental and social performance. That mix creates both strength and vulnerability: bibliometric data are consistent and comparable, whereas self-submitted data depend on what institutions choose to report and how they define it.
8. Critical Limitations |
A strong essay answer, or a strong interview discussion, acknowledges the weaknesses of the metric rather than simply celebrating it. Four criticisms are particularly common.
- Reporting bias | 报告偏差 - richer universities employ sustainability officers who can compile detailed submissions. The metric may partly measure administrative capacity rather than environmental performance.
- Scale bias | 规模偏差 - large research-intensive universities generate more sustainability-related publications and citations almost by default, which favours them over smaller teaching-focused institutions.
- Metric gaming and Goodhart's Law | 指标博弈与古德哈特定律 - when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. Universities may rebrand modules as sustainability-related without changing their content.
- Only 5 per cent | 仅占5% - with sustainability at 5 per cent, a perfect sustainability score cannot compensate for a weak reputation score. The ranking is still dominated by prestige.
The honest conclusion is that the sustainability indicator is a meaningful signal about institutional direction, but it is not a measurement of a university's total environmental footprint, and it should never be read in isolation from the other indicators.
9. How QS Compares with Other Rankings | QS
QS is not the only organisation measuring sustainability in higher education, and comparing methodologies is an excellent exercise in critical thinking.
