Every summer, some international students lose a hard-won university place for a reason that has nothing to do with grades: they applied for their Student visa too late, or too early, or with financial evidence that had already expired. The gap between holding an offer and holding permission to enter the UK is a paperwork window with firm legal edges, and the rules are strict about when that window opens and closes.

1. The Five Stages from Offer to Visa | 从录取到签证的五个环节
The route from a university offer to a Student visa has five fixed stages, and each stage gates the next. You cannot book a visa application without a CAS, and you cannot receive a CAS until your offer has become unconditional and your deposit, where required, has cleared. Treating these as one long process rather than five separate tasks is the single most useful change of mindset you can make.

Two dates dominate all the planning: your course start date, which is printed on your CAS, and your university's latest enrolment or arrival date, which is not. The second one is usually the real deadline, and it is almost always earlier than students assume.

2. Offer vs CAS: Two Documents, Two Different Purposes | 录取通知与 CAS：两份文件，两种用途
An offer is an academic judgement. It says the university is willing to teach you, usually on condition that you achieve certain grades or an English language score. A CAS is an immigration document. It is a unique reference number that the university, acting as a licensed sponsor, generates in the Home Office's sponsorship system to confirm that it wishes to sponsor your Student visa.

The practical consequences of that difference are significant. A CAS can normally be used only once, for one application, so if your application is refused and you reapply you will usually need a new CAS. Most universities also state that a CAS must be used within a limited period, commonly six months of issue, and that it cannot be issued more than a set number of months before the course begins. Always read your own university's CAS policy, because the details vary between institutions.

There is also a sequencing rule that catches people out: a CAS is only issued once your place is unconditional. If you are holding a conditional offer, no amount of chasing will produce a CAS, because the sponsor cannot confirm your course details, start date and fee status until the conditions are satisfied.

3. When Does Your CAS Actually Arrive? | CAS 究竟什么时候到手
CAS release dates vary widely between universities and between applicants at the same university. Four factors drive the timing: whether your offer is conditional or unconditional, whether a deposit is required and has cleared, how quickly the university completes its own compliance checks on your previous study and immigration history, and how deep into the peak season your file sits.

Students who already hold achieved grades, such as those applying after a gap year or with final A-Level results in hand, are often able to request a CAS from February or March onwards. Students waiting on summer examinations typically receive their CAS from mid-August, once results are confirmed. Clearing applicants can receive a CAS within days in late August, but they are also the group with the least time left before term begins.

If you are applying from outside the UK, the earliest date you may submit a Student visa application is six months before the start date of your course. This is a hard ceiling: an application submitted earlier than that is invalid, and the fee is not refunded.

The six-month rule is therefore a ceiling, not a target: it tells you what is forbidden, not what is wise. The date you should aim for is determined by the deadline at the other end of the process.
