📚 How to Count the IELTS One Skill Retake 60-Day Window: From the Test Date on Your Original TRF |
The IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you resit a single skill - Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking - instead of the whole test. The rule that catches most candidates out is the deadline: the retake must fall inside a 60-day window that starts from the test date printed on your original Test Report Form (TRF), not from the day results were released, and not from the day you decide to book. This guide shows exactly how to count that window, with calendar examples, eligibility checks, booking traps and a day-by-day action plan you can apply immediately.
1. What the 60-Day Window Really Means | 60
In plain English, the rule is one sentence: your One Skill Retake test date must be no more than 60 days after the test date of your original, complete IELTS test. The window opens on the original test date itself and closes 60 days later. Everything else - when you saw your results online, when the paper TRF arrived by post, when you booked the retake - is irrelevant to the calculation.
Three common misunderstandings are worth separating out before you start counting:
It is not counted from the results date. Computer-delivered IELTS results usually arrive in 1-3 days and paper-based results in about 13 days, so a results-based window would give you more time than you actually have. Starting from the test date takes that slack away.
It is not counted from the booking date. Booking early does not extend the window; only the actual retake test date matters.
It is a rolling 60 days, not two calendar months. Because months have 28 to 31 days, "two months later" and "60 days later" can differ by up to three days. Always count days, never months.
2. Counting Day 0, Day 1 and Day 60 Correctly |
The cleanest method is to treat the original test date as Day 0. The very next calendar day is Day 1, the day after that is Day 2, and so on until Day 60, which is the last date on which your One Skill Retake may be taken. In formula form:
Last eligible retake date = Original test date + 60 days
Note the subtlety: the window covers 61 calendar dates in total (Day 0 through Day 60 inclusive), but the permitted interval between the two test dates is 60 days. If a member of staff or an agent tells you "you have got 61 days", they are describing the number of dates spanned, not the interval you are allowed.
A second, equally reliable method is to write the original test date down, add 60 to the day number, and then adjust backwards if the month is shorter. For example, 10 March + 60 days: March has 21 days left after the 10th, leaving 39 days; April contributes 30 days, leaving 9; therefore the last eligible date is 9 May. Both methods should give the same answer, so use one to check the other.
3. Worked Calendar Examples |
Abstract rules become obvious once you run real dates through them. The table below shows four original test dates, the corresponding Day 60, and the number of days you realistically have for booking and sitting the retake.
Last eligible retake date (Day 60) 最后可重考日(第60天) |
Notes
|---|---|---|
| 10 March 2025 2025
9 May 2025 2025年5月9日 |
Crosses one 30-day and one 31-day month
19 November 2025 2025
Two 31-day months, so the date shifts forward
| 5 January 2026 2026
6 March 2026 2026
February has 28 days in 2026, so the window is shorter 2026
20 April 2024 2024
Leap year: February has 29 days
Read the third row again. A candidate who tested on 5 January 2026 and thought "I have until early April because that is two months" would be exactly 27 days late. That is the single most expensive arithmetic error in the whole OSR process.
4. Which Date on Your TRF Actually Counts |
The date you must use is the test date shown on your Test Report Form, in the field normally labelled "Test Date". For computer-delivered IELTS, all four skills are normally completed on the same calendar day, so there is only one date to worry about. For paper-based tests, the written components and the speaking interview may fall on different dates; in that case you should rely on the officially recorded test date on your TRF and, if the two differ, confirm with your test centre which one the booking system uses.
Two look-alike dates cause most of the confusion:
Test date: the day you sat the exam. This is the one that starts the 60-day clock.
Results or issue date: printed near the top of the TRF and sometimes also on the reverse. This is administrative only and has no bearing on your OSR eligibility.
Also watch the date format. IELTS documents commonly use DD/MM/YYYY, so 05/03/2025 means 5 March 2025, not 3 May. If you are converting a date into your own calendar or a spreadsheet, write the month name in full to avoid a silent, unspotted mistake.
5. Eligibility: Who Can Book an One Skill Retake |
The 60-day window is only relevant if you are eligible in the first place. Eligibility is assessed on the original test, so check it before you start counting days.
You must have completed a full four-skill IELTS test; a partial or cancelled test does not qualify.
Only one skill may be retaken, and only once per original test.
The retake must be the same test type and the same module as the original, for example IELTS Academic on computer.
The service must be available at your chosen test centre and in your region; availability varies and is updated over time.
Some test types, including certain UK visa-related routes and IELTS Life Skills, are outside the OSR scheme.
If any of these fail, the 60-day arithmetic becomes irrelevant. Fix eligibility first, then plan the calendar.
6. Booking Deadline vs Test Date Deadline |
Here is the trap that catches organised candidates. The 60-day rule constrains your retake test date, not your booking date. You may book on Day 5 or on Day 55; what matters is that the test itself is sat on or before Day 60. Booking early gives you nothing extra in terms of the rule, but it gives you everything in terms of seat availability.
Two practical consequences follow:
Your usable booking period is shorter than 60 days. If computer-delivered results take about 3 days and you need a day or two to decide, you are really working with roughly 55 usable days.
Late-window seats are the scarcest. Test dates in the final two weeks of your window are the ones everyone else is chasing too, so they fill first.
A useful safety rule: aim to sit the retake by Day 45, not Day 60. That leaves a 15-day buffer for illness, technical problems, or a date being withdrawn, without pushing you outside the legal window.
7. Paper-Based, Computer-Delivered and Regional Differences |
The 60-day arithmetic is identical everywhere, but the surrounding rules are not. Test format, region and centre policy all shape what you can actually book.
| Factor
What to check
|---|---|
| Test format
OSR is most widely offered for computer-delivered tests; paper-based availability is narrower
| Region
Rollout dates and participating centres differ by country and city
| Centre
Not every centre offers every session type or speaking slot for retakes
| Purpose
Some universities and immigration authorities do not accept retake results
Because these variables move, the authoritative answer for your case comes from the official booking system plus your test centre. Treat any dated table or forum post, including this article's examples, as a counting method rather than a guarantee of availability.
8. What You Receive After the Retake |
After the retake you receive a new Test Report Form. It shows the new score for the skill you retook, together with the scores you already had for the other three skills. In effect, the retake upgrades one column of your result rather than producing a completely separate test.
