📚 IELTS 0 to 9: How the Overall Band Score Relates to the Four Skill Scores | 雅思 0 到 9 分九分制:总分与四个单项分的关系
Every IELTS candidate eventually stares at a Test Report Form and asks the same question: how exactly did four separate skill scores turn into that one overall band? The nine-point scale looks simple, but the arithmetic behind it, the rounding conventions, and the way a single weak skill can cap your total are all frequently misunderstood. This guide explains the official relationship between the overall band and the four individual skills in full detail, with worked examples, raw-score conversion tables, and practical planning advice.
每一位雅思考生最终都会盯着成绩单问同一个问题:四个单项分究竟是怎样变成那一个总分的?九分制看起来简单,但背后的算术规则、进位方式,以及某个短板如何拖住总分,却常被误解。本文系统讲解总分与听说读写四个单项之间的官方换算关系,包含计算实例、原始分对照表与实用的备考规划建议。
1. The Nine-Band Scale at a Glance | 九分制全景速览
IELTS reports every score, both the overall band and each of the four skills, on the same nine-point scale. The scale runs from 0 to 9 and allows half bands (for example 6.5 or 7.5) at both the individual and overall level. Band 9 describes an expert user whose English is fully operational, accurate and fluent; band 5 describes a modest user with partial command; band 1 describes a non-user. Band 0 means the candidate did not attempt the test.
雅思的总分与听说读写四个单项,全部使用同一套九分制。分数范围是 0 到 9 分,单项和总分都可以出现半分(例如 6.5 或 7.5)。9 分代表运用自如、准确流畅的专家级使用者;5 分代表部分掌握、能力有限的考生;1 分代表几乎无法使用英语。0 分表示考生缺考或未作答。
| Band 分数 | Descriptor 官方描述 | Practical meaning 实际含义 |
| 9 | Expert user | Near-native, fully accurate 接近母语,几乎无错 |
| 8 | Very good user | Occasional slips only 偶有小错 |
| 7 | Good user | Handles complex language well 能处理复杂语言 |
| 6 | Competent user | Generally effective despite errors 总体有效但有错 |
| 5 | Modest user | Partial command, frequent errors 部分掌握,错误较多 |
| 4 | Limited user | Frequent breakdowns 常见理解与表达障碍 |
| 3 / 2 / 1 | Extremely limited / intermittent / non-user | Isolated words or no real communication 仅零散词汇或无实际交流 |
2. How the Overall Band Is Calculated | 总分是如何计算出来的
The overall band is the arithmetic mean of the four skill bands, that is, the four scores added together and divided by four. All four skills carry exactly the same weight: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking each contribute one quarter of the total. There is no official weighting that favours Writing over Speaking, or Reading over Listening, no matter how many candidates suspect otherwise.
总分就是四项分数的算术平均值,即四项相加再除以四。四个单项权重完全相同:听力、阅读、写作、口语各占四分之一。官方既不会因为写作更难而降低其权重,也不会因为阅读更容易而提高其权重,四个部分一视同仁。
Overall Band = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4
This formula is applied to the band scores, not to raw marks. Writing and Speaking do not have raw marks at all, since they are assessed against band descriptors by trained examiners. Listening and Reading raw marks out of 40 are first converted into a band via an official conversion table, and only then does the averaging take place.
注意:这个公式作用于"分数段",而不是原始分。写作和口语没有原始分,由受过培训的考官依据评分标准直接给出级分。听力和阅读先要把 40 题中的答对数按官方换算表转成等级分,之后才能参与平均计算。
3. The Rounding Rule: Why .25 and .75 Round Up | 进位规则:为什么 .25 和 .75 都向上取整
Because each skill band is a multiple of 0.5, the sum of the four skills is also a multiple of 0.5, and dividing by four produces only eight possible decimal endings: .0, .125, .25, .375, .5, .625, .75 and .875. The overall band must be reported as a whole or half band, so a rounding decision is unavoidable.
由于每个单项都是 0.5 的整数倍,四项总和也必然是 0.5 的整数倍,除以 4 之后只可能出现八种小数结尾:.0、.125、.25、.375、.5、.625、.75、.875。而总分只能报告为整数或半分,因此必须做取舍。
The official convention is to round to the nearest half band, with exact midpoints rounding up. In practice this means an average ending in .25 is rounded up to .5, and an average ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band. Averages ending in .125 or .625 are closer to the lower half band and therefore round down.
官方规则是"四舍五入到最近的半分",恰好位于正中点时向上取整。实践中即:平均分以 .25 结尾时进位到 .5,以 .75 结尾时进位到下一个整数分;而以 .125 或 .625 结尾时,距离下方半分更近,因此向下取整。
| Average 平均分 | Overall Band 总分 | Reason 原因 |
| 6.000 | 6.0 | Exact 正好是整数 |
| 6.125 | 6.0 | Closer to 6.0 更接近 6.0 |
| 6.250 | 6.5 | Midpoint rounds up 中点向上 |
| 6.375 | 6.5 | Closer to 6.5 更接近 6.5 |
| 6.500 | 6.5 | Exact 正好是半分 |
| 6.625 | 6.5 | Closer to 6.5 更接近 6.5 |
| 6.750 | 7.0 | Midpoint rounds up 中点向上 |
| 6.875 | 7.0 | Closer to 7.0 更接近 7.0 |
4. Worked Examples: From Four Skills to One Score | 计算实例:从四个单项到总分
ll band of 6.0. Notice that the Writing score of 5.5 did not lift or break the total on its own; the average simply landed below the midpoint.
假设某考生听力 6.5、阅读 6.5、写作 5.5、口语 6.0。总分和为 24.5,24.5 ÷ 4 = 6.125,向下取整为总分 6.0。可以看到,写作的 5.5 并不会单独决定一切,只是把平均分压到了中点以下。
exactly on the midpoint and therefore rounds up to an overall 7.0. Many universities set 7.0 as the entry requirement, and this candidate clears it even though no single skill reached 7.5.
再看听力 7.0、阅读 7.0、写作 6.5、口语 6.5 的情况。总和 27.0,27.0 ÷ 4 = 6.75,恰好落在中点,因此向上进位为总分 7.0。许多大学把 7.0 作为录取线,该考生虽然没有任何单项达到 7.5,依然达标。
A third candidate: Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5 gives a sum of 28.5 and an average of 7.125, which rounds down to 7.0. This is the classic "strong receptive, weaker productive" profile, and it shows clearly that an 8.0 in Listening does not automatically pull the overall score up to 7.5.
第三位考生:听力 8.0、阅读 7.5、写作 6.5、口语 6.5,总和 28.5,平均 7.125,向下取整为总分 7.0。这正是典型的"输入型强、输出型弱"组合,说明听力 8.0 并不能自动把总分拉到 7.5。
24.5 ÷ 4 = 6.125 → 6.0 | 27.0 ÷ 4 = 6.75 → 7.0 | 28.5 ÷ 4 = 7.125 → 7.0
5. What Each Skill Really Contributes | 每个单项的真实贡献
Because the divisor is four, a change of 0.5 in a single skill moves the average by only 0.125, which is often not enough to shift the reported overall band. To move the overall band by a full half band, you normally need a combined improvement of 2.0 band points across the four skills, for example four separate improvements of 0.5 each.
由于除以 4,单一单项提高 0.5 只让平均分上升 0.125,往往不足以改变总分。要让总分整体上升半分,通常需要在四项上合计提升 2.0 分,例如四项各提高 0.5。
- EN: A single 0.5 gain in one skill = +0.125 on the average. 中文:单一单项 +0.5 分 = 平均分 +0.125 分。
- EN: Four skills each +0.5 = +2.0 total = +0.5 on the overall band. 中文:四项各 +0.5 分 = 合计 +2.0 = 总分 +0.5。
- EN: loss in one skill = -0.25 on the average, often enough to drop the overall by half a band. 中文:单一单项下降 1.0 分 = 平均分 -0.25,往往足以让总分掉半分。
The asymmetry matters: losing ground is faster than gaining it. A candidate sitting on a 6.75 average (overall 7.0) who drops 1.0 in Writing falls to a 6.5 average, and the overall band falls to 6.5. The same candidate would need to lift two other skills by 0.5 each just to return to 7.0.
这种不对称很关键:掉分比涨分快。一个平均 6.75(总分 7.0)的考生,如果写作掉 1.0 分,平均分就降到 6.5,总分随之变成 6.5。要想回到 7.0,他必须在另外两项上各提高 0.5 才能补回来。
6. Listening and Reading: Raw Marks to Band Scores | 听力与阅读:原始分到等级分
Listening and Reading each contain 40 questions. The number of correct answers is converted into a band score through an official conversion table that varies slightly between test versions and differs between Academic and General Training Reading. The tables below show typical conversions and are accurate enough for planning purposes.
听力与阅读各 40 题,答对题数会通过官方换算表转为等级分。换算表在不同试卷版本间略有浮动,学术类与培训类阅读的对照表也不相同。下表为常见换算区间,用于备考规划已足够准确。
| Band 等级分 | Listening (out of 40) | Academic Reading (out of 40) |
| 9.0 | 39 - 40 | 39 - 40 |
| 8.5 | 37 - 38 | 37 - 38 |
| 8.0 | 35 - 36 | 35 - 36 |
| 7.5 | 32 - 34 | 33 - 34 |
| 7.0 | 30 - 31 | 30 - 32 |
| 6.5 | 26 - 29 | 27 - 29 |
| 6.0 | 23 - 25 | 23 - 26 |
| 5.5 | 18 - 22 | 19 - 22 |
| 5.0 | 16 - 17 | 15 - 18 |
Two observations follow. First, the jump from 6.5 to 7.0 in Reading requires roughly 3 or 4 extra correct answers, while the jump from 5.0 to 5.5 may require only 2 or 3. Second, above band 7.5, each additional half band costs two or three correct answers, which is why the upper bands feel so expensive.
由此可得两点。第一,阅读从 6.5 提到 7.0 大约需要多对 3 到 4 题,而从 5.0 提到 5.5 可能只需多对 2 到 3 题。第二,7.5 分以上,每提高半分大约要再多对 2 到 3 题,这就是高分段"性价比"极低的原因。
7. Writing and Speaking: Four Criteria Behind Each Score | 写作与口语:每个单项背后的四项标准
Writing and Speaking do not use raw marks. Instead, examiners award a band score against four separate criteria, and the four criterion scores are averaged (using the same rounding convention) to produce the single Writing band or Speaking band that appears on your report form. This means a weak criterion is hidden inside a single skill score and is invisible on the Test Report Form.
For example, a Writing performance scored 7 / 7 / 6 / 6 across the four criteria sums to 26
