📚 IELTS Overall Band Score Rounding Rules: Why Your Average Is Not Your Final Score |

Every IELTS candidate eventually does the same thing: adds up Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, divides by four, and assumes that number is the overall band score. It is not. IELTS takes that average and rounds it to the nearest half band, and the rule it uses at the midpoints is not the rule most people expect. Understanding the exact mechanic changes how you plan your retake, how you read a score report, and whether a 0.5 improvement in one skill is actually worth chasing.

1. The Core Rule |

The overall band score is the arithmetic mean of the four skill scores, rounded to the nearest half band. The published score is always a multiple of 0.5. There is no such thing as an overall band of 6.25 or 6.75 on a Test Report Form.

Overall = (L + R + W + S) ÷ 4 → rounded to the nearest 0.5 band

The key word is "rounded", not "truncated" and not "rounded down". A candidate whose mean is 6.375 receives 6.5, not 6.0. A candidate whose mean is 6.875 receives 7.0, not 6.5.

2. Why the Average Can Only Land on Specific Values |

Each of the four skill scores is itself reported to the nearest half band, so each is a multiple of 0.5. Their sum is therefore also a multiple of 0.5, and dividing a multiple of 0.5 by 4 always produces a multiple of 0.125. This is the single most important structural fact in the whole system.

So the decimal part of your mean can only ever be one of eight values: .000, .125, .250, .375, .500, .625, .750 or .875. You will never see a mean of 6.333 or 6.7. That narrow set of possibilities is exactly why the rounding table is short and completely predictable.

3. The Complete Rounding Table |

The table below covers every possible outcome. Learn it once and you can compute any score combination in your head.

Mean ends in Example mean Overall band Direction
.000 6.000 6.0 No change
.125 6.125 6.0 Rounds down
.250 6.250 6.5 Midpoint, rounds UP
.375 6.375 6.5 Rounds up
.500 6.500 6.5 No change
.625 6.625 6.5 Rounds down
.750 6.750 7.0 Midpoint, rounds UP
.875 6.875 7.0 Rounds up

An alternative way to state the same rule: work out the mean, multiply by 2, round to the nearest whole number using half-up, then divide by 2. Both methods give identical results.

Overall = round(Mean × 2) ÷ 2

4. The Midpoint Rule Nobody Remembers |

At .250 and .750 your mean sits exactly halfway between two publishable bands. Standard mathematical convention would leave the tie unbroken; IELTS resolves it by always rounding upward. This single detail is worth 0.5 of a band, and it is the reason candidates with a mean of 6.25 celebrate while candidates with a mean of 6.125 do not.

Note carefully that .125 and .625 also round "up" in a loose sense, but they do not cross a half-band boundary, so the published score stays where it is. Only .250 and .750 move you into the next band.

5. Worked Example 1: The Frustrating 6.125 |

Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5.

(6.0 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 6.5) ÷ 4 = 24.5 ÷ 4 = 6.125

6.125 is closer to 6.0 than to 6.5 (it is 0.125 away from 6.0 and 0.375 away from 6.5), so the overall band is 6.0. The candidate has already earned one 6.5 but gains nothing from it at the overall level.

This is the most common near-miss in IELTS. To escape it, the candidate needs a mean of at least 6.25, which means the four scores must sum to 25.0 or more. That is a full 0.5 of a band above the current sum of 24.5, and it can come from any single skill.

6. Worked Example 2: When +0.5 Changes Nothing |

Start with Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0.

(6.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0) ÷ 4 = 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.250 → 6.5

Now suppose the candidate works hard and lifts Writing from 6.0 to 6.5.

(6.5 + 6.5 + 6.5 + 6.0) ÷ 4 = 25.5 ÷ 4 = 6.375 → 6.5

The overall band is still 6.5. Months of work produced no visible movement on the Test Report Form. This is not a scoring error; it is the rounding rule doing exactly what it is designed to do. The candidate has quietly banked 0.125 toward the next threshold, which may pay off later if another skill also improves.

The practical lesson: before you decide which skill to push, add up your four scores and check which single-skill improvement would actually move the total.

7. Worked Example 3: The Lucky Quarter |

Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, Speaking 7.0.

(6.0 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.250 → 6.5

Speaking jumped a whole band compared with Example 1, and the overall score jumped only half a band. Compare that with a candidate at 6.0, 6.0, 6.5, 6.5, whose mean is also 6.25 and who also receives 6.5. Two very different profiles, one identical headline score. Admissions officers see the headline figure first, which is why the subscores matter enormously once you are past the initial filter.

Conversely, many universities impose minimum subscores precisely because the overall band hides these differences.

8. Where the Four Numbers Come From: Listening and Reading |

Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 and converted to band scores using a conversion table that is adjusted slightly for each test version. The bands produced are always multiples of 0.5, which is what keeps the whole rounding system coherent.

The table below is indicative only. Treat it as a planning guide, not a guarantee.

Band Listening raw (approx.) Academic Reading raw (approx.)
8.0 35 – 36 35 – 36
7.5 32 – 34 33 – 34
7.0 30 – 31 30 – 32
6.5 26 – 29 27 – 29
6.0 23 – 25 23 – 26
5.5 18 – 22 19 – 22

Notice how wide some raw-score ranges are. Moving from 22 correct to 24 correct in Listening may not change your band at all, while moving from 25 to 26 changes it by half a band. The same "cliff edge" logic that governs overall rounding also governs each individual module.
