📚 IELTS Speaking Part 2: 1-Minute Preparation and a 2-Minute Talk | 雅思口语第二部分:1分钟准备与最多2分钟陈述
Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test is the only section where you speak alone for up to two minutes. Candidates who prepare well can lift their band score quickly, because the whole task is predictable: you receive a cue card, get exactly one minute to make notes, then talk for up to two minutes, followed by one or two short follow-up questions. This guide breaks the task into a repeatable system - what to write in your minute, how to structure the talk, which language to recycle, and how to practise until the format feels automatic.
雅思口语第二部分是整场考试中唯一需要你独自连续说最多两分钟的环节。准备得法的考生往往能在短期内明显提分,因为这项任务高度可预测:你拿到一张题卡,有整整一分钟做笔记,然后最多陈述两分钟,最后考官会追问一到两个简短问题。本文将这一任务拆解成一套可重复执行的系统:一分钟里写什么、两分钟里怎么搭结构、可以反复使用的语言、以及如何练习到形式自动化。
1. What Actually Happens in Part 2 | 第二部分到底发生了什么
The examiner hands you a cue card, a pencil and some paper, and says: "I'd like you to talk about this for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes if you wish." After exactly one minute you are asked to begin. The examiner will stop you at two minutes. Then one or two brief follow-up questions may follow, for example "Do you often talk about this topic with your friends?" These follow-ups are usually not scored in detail, but answering them calmly leaves a strong final impression.
考官会递给你一张题卡、一支铅笔和纸,然后说:"I'd like you to talk about this for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes if you wish." 整整一分钟后,考官请你开始。到两分钟时考官会打断你。之后可能会有一到两个简短追问,例如 "Do you often talk about this topic with your friends?" 这些追问通常不单独细化评分,但镇定作答能留下很好的收尾印象。
Key timings to remember:
- Preparation: 60 seconds, fixed and not negotiable.
- Speaking: aim for 1 minute 45 seconds to 2 minutes.
- Total Part 2 time including follow-ups: roughly 3 to 4 minutes.
需要记住的关键时间点:
- 准备时间:60 秒,固定不变,无法协商。
- 陈述时间:目标是 1 分 45 秒到 2 分钟。
- 第二部分总时长含追问:约 3 到 4 分钟。
2. Anatomy of a Cue Card | 题卡的结构拆解
A typical cue card has a topic line plus four bullet points. The first bullet usually asks for factual background, the middle bullets ask for description or narrative, and the final bullet asks for explanation or evaluation. Understanding this pattern means you never have to invent a structure from scratch.
典型题卡由一行话题加四个要点组成。第一个要点通常要求背景事实,中间两个要点要求描述或叙述,最后一个要点要求解释或评价。看懂这个规律,你就不必每次从零构思结构。
A sample card:
| Describe a skill you learned that was difficult at first |
| You should say: - what the skill was - when and where you learned it - how you practised it - and explain why it was difficult at first |
示例题卡:
| Describe a skill you learned that was difficult at first |
| You should say: - what the skill was(是什么技能) - when and where you learned it(何时何地学的) - how you practised it(如何练习) - and explain why it was difficult at first(并解释为何起初困难) |
Notice the tense signals: "was difficult at first" demands past tenses plus a contrast with the present, for example "It was frustrating at the start, but now I can do it without thinking." Reading the verb forms in the bullets is the fastest way to choose your grammar before you speak.
注意时态信号:"was difficult at first" 要求使用过去时并与现在形成对比,例如 "It was frustrating at the start, but now I can do it without thinking." 读懂要点中的动词形式,是开口前最快确定语法的办法。
3. The 1-Minute Preparation: What to Write | 一分钟准备:笔记该写什么
Your notes exist to trigger speech, not to be read out. Write single words and short symbols only. Full sentences waste time and tempt you into reading, which damages fluency, intonation and eye contact.
笔记的作用是触发表达,而不是拿来朗读。只写单词和简短符号。写完整句子既浪费时间,又会诱使你照读,从而破坏流利度、语调和眼神交流。
Divide your minute roughly like this:
- 0-10 seconds: read the card twice and identify the tense.
- 10-40 seconds: jot down 8 to 12 key words in four groups matching the four bullets.
- 40-55 seconds: add two or three high-value phrases you want to use (an idiom, a linking phrase, a specific detail).
- 55-60 seconds: silently rehearse only your first sentence.
把这一分钟大致这样分配:
- 0-10 秒:把题卡读两遍,确定时态。
- 10-40 秒:按四个要点分四组,写下 8 到 12 个关键词。
- 40-55 秒:补上两三个你想用的高价值短语(一个习语、一个衔接语、一个具体细节)。
- 55-60 秒:只在心里默念第一句话。
4. A Four-Box Note Framework | 四格笔记框架
Draw a cross on your paper to make four boxes, one per bullet point. This gives you a visual map so that even if you panic, your eyes can find the next idea immediately.
在纸上画一个十字,分成四格,每格对应一个要点。这样就有一张视觉地图,即便紧张,眼睛也能立刻找到下一个思路。
Example notes for the skill card, written as a candidate would actually write them:
| WHAT driving / manual car / 18 | WHEN + WHERE last summer / local driving school / 6 weeks |
| HOW 2 lessons a week / 3-point turn / clutch / instructor patient | WHY HARD coordination / stall the engine / nerve-racking / now automatic |
Notice that one box holds "nerve-racking", a strong adjective, and another holds "stall the engine", a precise collocation. In the minute, spend your energy on words like these rather than on nouns you will never forget.
注意其中一个格子放着 "nerve-racking" 这个有力的形容词,另一个放着 "stall the engine" 这个精准搭配。在这一分钟里,把精力花在这类词上,而不是你根本不会忘的名词上。
5. Structuring the 2-Minute Monologue | 两分钟独白的结构
A clear structure protects your Fluency and Coherence score. Use a simple four-part shape: opening, background, development, closing evaluation. Each part corresponds to one bullet on the card, and each takes roughly 25 to 35 seconds.
清晰的结构能保护你的"流利与连贯"分数。用一个简单的四段式:开场、背景、展开、收尾评价。每段对应题卡的一个要点,各占约 25 到 35 秒。
Opening 25 s → Background 30 s → Development 45 s → Evaluation 25 s ≈ 2 min
Useful signposting language for each stage:
- Opening: "I'd like to talk about...", "The skill I have in mind is...", "I'm going to describe..."
- Background: "This happened when I was...", "It all started when..."
- Development: "What made it tricky was...", "The way I got better was...", "On top of that..."
- Evaluation: "Looking back, I think...", "What I took away from it is...", "These days it has become second nature."
各阶段可用的衔接语言:
- 开场:"I'd like to talk about..."、"The skill I have in mind is..."、"I'm going to describe..."
- 背景:"This happened when I was..."、"It all started when..."
- 展开:"What made it tricky was..."、"The way I got better was..."、"On top of that..."
- 收尾评价:"Looking back, I think..."、"What I took away from it is..."、"These days it has become second nature."
6. Extending an Idea Instead of Listing Facts | 展开思路而不是罗列事实
Most candidates who stop after ninety seconds do so because they list facts: they say what, when and where, and then fall silent. The cure is to add one extra layer to every bullet - a reason, an example, a contrast or a feeling.
多数说满九十秒就停下的考生,原因在于他们只是在罗列事实:说完是什么、何时、何地就没话了。解决办法是给每个要点加一层:一个理由、一个例子、一个对比或一种感受。
A four-step extension formula you can apply to any bullet:
- State it: "I learned to drive at a local driving school."
- Explain it: "I chose it mainly because the instructors there had a reputation for being patient."
- Illustrate it: "For instance, my instructor would make me repeat the same three-point turn ten times in a row."
- Evaluate it: "It felt tedious at the time, though I can see now why it worked."
适用于任何要点的四步展开公式:
- 陈述:"I learned to drive at a local driving school."
- 解释:"I chose it mainly because the instructors there had a reputation for being patient."
- 举例:"For instance, my instructor would make me repeat the same three-point turn ten times in a row."
- 评价:"It felt tedious at the time, though I can see now why it worked."
Applying this formula to just two bullets will comfortably add forty seconds. It also raises your Grammatical Range score, because explaining and evaluating naturally push you into complex sentences with "because", "although" and "which".
只要对其中两个要点使用这套公式,就能轻松多出四十秒。它还会提升你的"语法多样性与准确性"分数,因为解释和评价会自然把你推向带 "because"、"although"、"which" 的复杂句。
7. Buying Time and Self-Correcting | 争取时间与自我纠正
Real speech contains pauses and repairs, and examiners expect them. What matters is that your pauses are filled with English rather than silence, and that your corrections move forward rather than loop backwards.
真实口语本就包含停顿和修正,考官也预期如此。关键是:停顿要用英语填充而不是沉默,修正要向前推进而不是反复倒退。
Time-buying phrases worth memorising:
- "That's an interesting one - let me think for a second."
- "Off the top of my head, I'd say..."
- "How shall I put this..."
- "What I'm trying to say is..."
值得背下来的拖延表达:
- "That's an interesting one - let me think for a second."
- "Off the top of my head, I'd say..."
- "How shall I put this..."
- "What I'm trying to say is..."
For self-correction, use a forward repair: "I went there with my brother - actually, with my cousin, because my brother was away." This kind of correction actually demonstrates control of grammar and vocabulary, so do not fear it. Avoid, however, restarting whole sentences three or four times, which signals a lack of coherence.
自我纠正要用"向前修正":"I went there with my brother - actually, with my cousin, because my brother was away." 这种修正恰恰展示了你对语法和词汇的掌控,不必害怕。但要避免把整句话重起三四次,那会暴露连贯性不足。
8. Vocabulary: Topic-Specific Collocations | 词汇:话题专属搭配
Examiners reward precise, natural word combinations rather than rare words used wrongly. In your preparation minute, force yourself to write at least three collocations linked to the specific topic on the card.
考官奖励的是精准自然的词语组合,而不是用错的生僻词。在准备的一分钟里,强迫自己写下至少三个与题卡话题直接相关的搭配。
| Topic | High-value collocations |
| A skill | pick up a skill, trial and error, muscle memory, get the hang of it |
| A person | have a lot of time for somebody, a shoulder to cry on, down to earth |
| A place | off the beaten track, hustle and bustle, a hidden gem, within walking distance |
| An object | sentimental value, built to last, hold on to something, come in handy |
| An event | last-minute hitch, in full swing, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, turn out well |
话题对照表(中文要点):技能类用 pick up a skill / trial and error / muscle memory / get the hang of it;人物类用 have a lot of time for somebody / a shoulder to cry on / down to earth;地点类用 off the beaten track / hustle and bustle / a hidden gem;物品类用 sentimental value / built to last / come in handy;事件类用 last-minute hitch / in full swing / turn out well。
One caution: do not force idioms into every sentence. Two or three well-placed ones sound natural; eight sound rehearsed and often slightly wrong in register.
一点提醒:不要把习语硬塞进每一句。恰到好处地放两三个显得自然;塞八个则像在背诵,而且语域常常不正确。
9. Grammar Range: Choosing Tenses Before You Speak | 语法范围:开口前先定时态
Part 2 topics are overwhelmingly about past experiences with present reflections. Decide in your preparation minute which tense dominates, then deliberately switch once or twice to show range.
第二部分话题绝大多数是"过去经历加现在反思"。在准备的一分钟里确定主导时态,然后有意识地切换一两次以展示语法范围。
- Past simple and past continuous for the narrative: "I was practising in an empty car park when I finally managed to park properly."
- Present perfect for experience: "I've been driving for about a year now."
- Present simple for habits and current state: "These days I drive to work every morning."
- Conditionals for evaluation: "If I hadn't kept at it, I would probably still be relying on buses."
中文要点:过去进行时与一般过去时用于叙述("I was practising in an empty car park when I finally managed to park properly.");现在完成时用于经历("I've been driving for about a year now.");一般现在时用于习惯与现状;条件句用于评价("If I hadn't kept at it, I would probably still be relying on buses.")。
Even one third conditional in a two-minute talk is enough to show the examiner that your range extends beyond basic structures. Plan it during the preparation minute so that it appears naturally rather than awkwardly.
在两分钟陈述里哪怕只出现一个第三条件句,也足以让考官看到你的语法范围超出基础结构。在准备阶段就计划好,让它自然出现而不是生硬插入。
10. Fluency Traps: Memorised Answers and Drifting Off Topic | 流利度陷阱:背诵答案与跑题
The most common score-killer in Part 2 is a memorised answer. Examiners are trained to spot delivered text: the pace becomes unnaturally smooth, the intonation flattens, the vocabulary suddenly changes register, and the script collapses the moment the examiner asks a follow-up question that was not in the script.
第二部分最常见的扣分杀手是背诵答案。考官受过训练,能识别"念稿":语速异常流畅、语调变平、词汇语域突然跳变,而一旦考官问出一个稿子里没有的追问,整段就崩掉。
Four other traps to police:
- Off-topic drift: you describe a similar experience instead of the one on the card. Stick to the four bullets.
- Reading your notes: your voice drops and your eyes leave the examiner. Notes should be words, not sentences.
- One-word answers in follow-ups: answer the follow-up in two or three sentences.
- Running silent: long silences read as breakdown. Use a filler phrase and continue.
另外四个要警惕的陷阱:
- 跑题:你描述了一段相似却不相关的经历。紧扣四个要点。
- 照读笔记:声音变小、视线离开考官。笔记应是词而非句。
- 追问只答一词:追问也用两三句话回答。
- 长时间沉默:沉默会被判为表达中断。用填充语接上继续说。
11. Finishing Early or Running Over | 说太短或超时怎么办
Stopping at ninety seconds is not a disaster, but you leave marks on the table, because Fluency and Coherence rewards sustained speech. Always keep one spare idea in reserve so that you can extend if you sense you are running short.
在九十秒处停下并非灾难,但你会白丢分数,因为"流利与连贯"奖励的是持续表达。永远留一个备用想法,感觉时间不够时用来延长。
Spare-idea strategies:
- Add a comparison: "Compared with learning to cook, this was far more mechanical."
- Add a counterpoint: "It's not something I'd want to relearn, mind you."
- Return to the final bullet and deepen it: "The real difficulty, I suppose, was psychological rather than physical."
备用想法策略:
- 增加对比:"Compared with learning to cook, this was far more mechanical."
- 增加转折:"It's not something I'd want to relearn, mind you."
- 回到最后一个要点深入:"The real difficulty, I suppose, was psychological rather than physical."
If the examiner stops you at two minutes, that is normal and not a penalty - it often means you were still developing ideas, which is a good sign. Never stop mid-word out of embarrassment; finish your clause and stop cleanly.
如果考官在两分钟时打断你,这很正常,不是惩罚--通常说明你还有想法在展开,是好事。不要因为不好意思而在词中戛然而止;把当前分句说完,干净收尾。
12. A Seven-Day Practice Plan | 七天练习计划
Part 2 improves fastest with timed, recorded repetition. Reading model answers helps you notice language, but it does not build the automatic fluency that the examiner is measuring.
第二部分的提升最快来自"限时加录音"的重复练习。阅读范文能帮你注意语言,但无法建立考官真正测量的自动化流利度。
| Day | Task | Focus |
| 1 | Three cue cards, notes only, no speaking | Note-taking speed |
| 2 | Three cue cards, full two minutes, recorded | Timing awareness |
| 3 | Listen back, transcribe 60 seconds, mark errors | Grammar accuracy |
| 4 | Re-record the same three cards using new collocations | Lexical resource |
| 5 | Five cards, one minute notes only, speak 1 min 45 s | Compression under pressure |
| 6 | Practise with a partner who asks follow-ups | Interaction and flexibility |
| 7 | Full mock: Parts 1, 2 and 3 back to back | Stamina and pacing |
中文版计划:第1天:3张题卡只做笔记不开口,练笔记速度。第2天:3张题卡完整说两分钟并录音,练时间感。第3天:回听并听写60秒,标出错误,练语法准确。第4天:用新搭配重录同一批题卡,练词汇资源。第5天:5张题卡只给一分钟笔记、说1分45秒,练压力下的压缩表达。第6天:与搭档练习,让对方提问追问,练互动与应变。第7天:完整模考第一、二、三部分连做,练体力与节奏。
When you listen back, score yourself against three simple questions: Did I speak for at least one minute forty? Did I use at least three topic collocations? Did I include one complex structure deliberately? Three "yes" answers usually correspond to a Band 7 performance in this part of the test.
回听时用三个简单问题给自己打分:是否至少说满1分40秒?是否用了至少三个话题搭配?是否刻意用了一个复杂结构?三个"是"通常对应这一部分 7 分的表现。
13. Examiner's Eye View | 考官视角
The examiner is not counting your mistakes. They are comparing your two minutes against four band descriptors: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. In Part 2 these are most visible through structure, collocation, tense control and clear stress and intonation.
考官不是在数你的错误,而是在把你的两分钟与四项评分标准对照:流利与连贯、词汇资源、语法多样性与准确性、发音。在第二部分,这四项最直观地体现在结构、搭配、时态控制和清晰的重音与语调上。
A concise summary of what lifts a candidate from Band 6 to Band 7 in Part 2:
- Speaking the full two minutes without prompting.
- Using connectives that show logic rather than filling silence: "the reason being", "which is why", "having said that".
- Choosing less common but accurate vocabulary instead of general words like "good" and "nice".
- Producing a mix of simple and complex sentences with few errors.
- Maintaining clear pronunciation and natural intonation even when excited or nervous.
从 6 分提升到 7 分的关键要点简明总结:
- 无需提示就说满两分钟。
- 使用体现逻辑而非填充沉默的连接语:"the reason being"、"which is why"、"having said that"。
- 选用不常见但准确的词汇,而非 "good"、"nice" 这类泛词。
- 简单句与复杂句交替出现,错误很少。
- 即使兴奋或紧张,仍保持清晰发音与自然语调。
Finally, remember that Part 2 is a performance of structured thinking, not a knowledge test. You are never asked whether your story is true or impressive - only whether you can develop it fluently, precisely and with control. Prepare the system, rehearse the timing, and the one-minute preparation becomes a genuine advantage rather than a source of panic.
最后请记住,第二部分考的是"结构化思考的表达",不是知识测验。考官从不追问你的故事是否真实或惊人,只关心你能否流利、精准、有掌控地把它展开。把这套系统准备好,把时间节奏练熟,那一分钟准备时间就会成为你真正的优势,而不是紧张的来源。
