📚 IELTS Test Day Checklist: A Label-Free Water Bottle and Essential Medication |
Test-day nerves are bad enough without a last-minute argument at the door about what you are allowed to carry inside. The IELTS test room is a controlled environment, and the list of permitted items is deliberately short: your identification document, a clear bottle of water with the label removed, and - with prior approval - any medication you genuinely need for a diagnosed medical condition. Everything else stays outside. This guide walks through the rules item by item so you can pack with confidence the night before and walk in calm on the morning of your test.
1. The Golden Rule: Fewer Items, Fewer Problems |
Every IELTS test centre applies the same core principle: the fewer items you bring into the test room, the fewer opportunities there are for misunderstanding, delay or an accidental misconduct report. Invigilators are not trying to make your morning difficult. They are protecting the integrity of a globally standardised test taken by millions of candidates each year, which means anything that could conceal information, transmit information or distract other candidates has to be excluded by default.
The practical consequence is simple: pack a minimal kit. Your ID document, a correctly prepared water bottle, and your approved medication if you have any. Leave everything else - including your own pens and pencils - at home or in the secure storage area provided by the centre.
2. What You May Take to Your Desk |
The permitted list is short and consistent across paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS. Confirm in advance with your own centre, because small local variations exist.
- Your identification document - the same passport or national ID you used when you registered. It will usually sit on your desk for inspection.
- A clear bottle of water with the label removed - transparent, unlabelled, plain water only.
- Approved medication - declared in advance, in its original pharmacy packaging, kept within reach.
- Medical aids you have cleared with the centre - for example an inhaler, a glucose meter, an insulin pen or an epinephrine auto-injector.
Nothing else belongs on your desk. If an item is not on this list and you have not received written permission for it, assume it is not allowed.
3. Why the Label Must Come Off | 为什么标签必须撕掉
The unlabelled bottle rule is the single most misunderstood instruction in the whole IELTS test-day process. Candidates often assume it is about litter or branding, but the reasoning is purely about test security. A clear bottle lets an invigilator see, at a glance, exactly what is inside it. A paper label, by contrast, is an opaque surface on which small handwriting, a formula or a vocabulary list could theoretically be hidden.
There is a second, more practical reason. The answer sheet is an optical mark sheet, and liquid damage can make it unscannable. Most centres therefore ask you to keep the bottle on the floor beside your chair rather than on the desk, so that a knocked-over bottle cannot destroy an hour of work. Some centres allow it on the desk; follow whatever the invigilator tells you on the day.
4. Preparing Your Bottle Step by Step |
Do this the night before, not in the queue at the test centre door.
- Step 1: Choose a clear plastic bottle, roughly 500 ml. Clear PET bottles are ideal.
- Step 2: Peel off the entire label, including the adhesive residue. Warm water or a little oil removes the glue. No sticky patch, no paper fragment should remain.
- Step 3: Remove or permanently cover any printed text, barcode or QR code on the bottle body. If branding is printed directly onto the plastic, choose a different bottle.
- Step 4: Fill it with plain water only. No juice, no squash, no fizzy drinks, no tea, no electrolyte powders.
- Step 5: Avoid metal flasks, insulated bottles and glass. They are opaque or breakable and may be refused at the door.
- Step 6: Check the cap seals tightly and give the bottle a dry outer wipe so it does not leave a wet ring on your desk or your ID.
A prepared bottle takes two minutes and removes an entire category of avoidable stress on the morning of the test.
5. Essential Medication: What Qualifies |
IELTS does not ban medication. What it regulates is undeclared and unexplained items entering a secure room. If you have a diagnosed condition that requires medication, you are entitled to bring it - provided you tell the centre in advance and can show that it is genuinely yours and genuinely prescribed.
Typical examples that centres routinely approve include:
- Asthma inhalers - a reliever inhaler is the most common approved item in IELTS test rooms.
- Insulin pens, insulin pumps and glucose testing supplies for candidates with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
- Epinephrine auto-injectors for severe allergies, plus antihistamines prescribed for the same condition.
- Regular prescription medication for chronic conditions such as epilepsy, heart conditions, thyroid disorders, anxiety or ADHD.
- Prescription pain relief where a documented condition makes it necessary.
Over-the-counter vitamins, protein supplements, herbal tonics, energy gels and general cold remedies normally do not qualify, because they are not essential to your health during a three-hour test. If you are unsure whether your item counts as essential, ask the centre in writing and keep the reply.
6. Declaring Medication and Access Arrangements |
Declaration is the part candidates skip, and it is the part that matters most. Contact your test centre as early as possible - ideally when you book, and in any case well before test day - and explain four things: your diagnosis, the name of the medication, the dosage and timing, and whether you will need to take it during the test itself.
You will normally be asked for a doctor's letter or a copy of your prescription. Request it in English where possible, and make sure it includes your full name as it appears on your ID, your diagnosis, the medicine, the dose and the reason it must be accessible during the test. A short, factual letter on clinic letterhead is far more useful than a long explanation.
If your condition affects your performance or your need for breaks, ask about IELTS access arrangements. Depending on your circumstances and the medical evidence you provide, a centre may grant extra time, supervised rest breaks, a separate room, or permission to bring food and drink for medical reasons. These arrangements must be agreed before test day; they cannot be arranged at the door.
One warning: never slip medication into your pocket without telling anyone. An undeclared tablet found during a routine check can be treated as a rule breach even when it is completely innocent, and the resulting investigation may cost you your result.
7. Items That Are Not Allowed |
The prohibited list is longer than the permitted one. Leaving these at home is the simplest way to protect your result.
- Mobile phones - must be switched off completely and stored outside the test room. A phone that rings or vibrates during the test can lead to disqualification.
- Smart watches, fitness bands and any watch - most centres now ask you to remove watches of every kind.
- Earphones, earbuds and Bluetooth devices of any kind.
- Your own pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, highlighters, rulers or correction fluid - the centre provides stationery.
- Notes, textbooks, dictionaries, electronic dictionaries and paper of any kind.
- Food, snacks and chewing gum - unless approved in advance for a medical reason such as diabetes.
- Bags, large coats and personal belongings - these go into the storage area, not to your desk.
- Tobacco, e-cigarettes and alcohol - never permitted, and arriving under the influence can result in refusal of entry.
If you are unsure about an item, the safe answer is always: leave it behind.
8. Identification: The One Thing You Cannot Do Without | 身份证件:唯一不可或缺的东西
Your water bottle is optional. Your medication matters only if you need it. Your ID document is non-negotiable. Without the exact document you registered with, you will not be admitted, and you will not receive a refund or a transfer.
The document must be the original, valid and undamaged, with a recognisable photograph and your signature where applicable. Photocopies, screenshots on your phone, expired documents and documents with a different spelling of your name will all be refused. For IELTS for UKVI and certain visa routes, the accepted ID type may be restricted to a passport, so check your booking confirmation carefully.
Arrive early. Most centres ask you to be there at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start, and check-in with photograph and ID verification can take longer at busy centres. Late candidates may be refused entry with no refund, no matter how good the reason.
9. What the Test Centre Provides |
You do not need to bring stationery, and in fact you are not allowed to. Understanding what is supplied stops you from over-packing.
- Pencils, erasers and a sharpener for paper-based IELTS, plus a pen for the Writing component in some centres.
- Answer sheets and question booklets, plus a candidate desk label with your number.
- Headphones for the Listening component, individually checked before the test begins.
- A note sheet and pencil for computer-delivered IELTS.
- A locker or supervised bag area for your belongings.
- Water in the speaking test room at many centres, and a waiting area before your interview.
Note that centres do not take responsibility for lost or stolen valuables. Bring only what you actually need.
10. Storage, Security and Mobile Phones |
The most common way candidates damage their own result is not cheating - it is a phone. The rule is straightforward: your phone must be switched off, not merely silenced, and placed in the designated storage area before you enter the test room. If it rings, vibrates or is found on your person during the test, you may be disqualified and your result withheld.
Plan your storage in advance. Put your keys, wallet, phone and bag into one small bag so that check-in is quick and nothing is left loose in a pocket. Empty your pockets completely before you sit down, including tissues, receipts and coins. Invigilators may conduct checks, including metal-detector wands, and a forgotten item in a pocket looks exactly like a deliberate one.
