Most candidates prepare for IELTS by drilling question types, memorising vocabulary and writing timed essays at the kitchen table. Very few of them spend even twenty minutes learning how the computer-delivered interface actually behaves: where the settings menu hides, what the live word counter counts, and how the countdown clock warns you before time runs out. Those three small features, used well, are worth more than a dozen extra practice tests.

Two candidates can walk into the same test centre with the same level of English and leave with different scores, simply because one of them lost ninety seconds hunting for a settings button or counting words by hand on the last line of Task 2. In the computer-delivered IELTS test, the screen is not a neutral window onto the exam; it is part of the exam. You will spend roughly two and a half hours looking at a monitor, typing on a keyboard and reacting to on-screen prompts, and every second spent fighting the interface is a second not spent re-reading a heading or checking a plural.

In the computer-delivered IELTS test, display options live in a settings panel that is normally reached through an icon at the top of the screen, usually a gear or a button labelled with a word such as Settings or Options. Once open, the panel offers a small number of choices: how large the text is, and what colour combination the text and background use. Changes take effect immediately on the reading passage, the questions and the instructions, so you can see exactly what you are choosing before you close the panel.

3. Choosing a Font Size: Reading Speed Versus Scrolling | 选择字体大小：阅读速度与滚动的平衡
Bigger text feels comfortable, but on a fixed screen it has a hidden cost. If you enlarge the font to the maximum, fewer words fit on each line and far fewer lines fit on the screen, so a 900-word Reading passage turns into a long scrolling exercise. Every scroll breaks your eye movement and costs you a second or two. For most candidates, one step above the default size is the sweet spot: noticeably easier on the eyes, but still enough text on screen to read in normal saccades.

Bright white backgrounds with small black text are the default on most screens, and in a brightly lit test room that combination can produce glare and after-images. The settings panel normally offers several alternatives, for example dark text on a soft cream background, or light text on a dark background. The purpose is not decoration; it is to reduce visual fatigue so that your accuracy in the final twenty minutes of Reading is the same as in the first twenty.

The safest moment to adjust the interface is before the clock for a section starts running. Computer-delivered IELTS normally includes short pre-section screens where you confirm your details or read instructions; those moments are free. If you forget, do it in the first ten seconds of a section, never in the middle of your second Reading passage when your momentum is highest.

The Listening section uses a headset and an on-screen volume control. Before the recording begins, you normally hear a short test sound; this is your one chance to confirm that the volume is comfortable and that both ears are working. The audio plays once only. There is no pause button and no rewind, so the only pacing tools you have are your own reading speed and the countdown clock.

In the computer-delivered format, the thirty-minute Listening section ends with a short review period, commonly about two minutes, in which you can check your answers on screen. Use it for mechanical checks rather than second-guessing: spelling, capital letters where needed, singular versus plural, and numbers written as digits. Do not use it to change an answer you heard clearly the first time.
