📚 Disrupted or Interrupted Exams: How Grades Are Handled and How to Appeal |
An exam is supposed to be a fair measurement of what you can do. When a fire alarm, an illness, a power cut or another candidate's behaviour gets in the way, that measurement becomes unreliable, and every major awarding organisation has a formal mechanism for correcting it. This guide explains what counts as disruption, which grade adjustments exist, how post-results services work, and how a candidate can escalate a case from a clerical re-check all the way to an appeal panel and the regulator.
1. What Counts as Disruption |
Disruption means any event, inside or outside the exam room, that stops a candidate from demonstrating their true attainment, or that makes the assessment itself unfair. It can happen before the exam, during the paper, or weeks earlier through lost teaching time.
Common categories include personal circumstances (illness, bereavement, mental health crisis), environmental events (fire alarms, building works, traffic noise, extreme heat or flooding), technical failures (computer crash in an on-screen test, faulty calculator or data logger), administrative problems (wrong paper issued, missing script, a late start) and third-party misconduct (another candidate cheating or being abusive).
It is useful to separate four different remedies, because students often confuse them: access arrangements (extra time and other support arranged before the exam), special consideration (a mark adjustment after the exam), post-results services (checks and reviews after results are published) and appeals (a challenge to a decision).
2. Who Decides: The Regulatory Framework |
For GCSE, A-level and vocational qualifications in the UK, the key document is the JCQ regulations, which cover AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, WJEC/Eduqas and CCEA. Awarding organisations are regulated in England by Ofqual, in Wales by Qualifications Wales, and in Northern Ireland by CCEA Regulation. International qualifications such as Cambridge International and Oxford AQA, and the IB Diploma, run parallel procedures under their own handbooks.
The single most important structural fact is that a candidate cannot apply directly to an awarding organisation. Every application - special consideration, clerical check, review of marking, appeal - must be submitted by the exam centre, normally through the exams officer. Your first phone call is therefore always to your school or centre, not to the board.
3. Special Consideration: The Main Grade Tool |
Special consideration is a post-examination adjustment to a candidate's mark. It is expressed as a percentage of the total marks available for the qualification, and the standard ceiling is 5%. Smaller adjustments of around 2% to 3% are used for less severe cases.
Adjusted total = raw total + (adjustment % × total marks for the specification)
The percentage reflects two things: how serious the event was, and how much of the assessment was affected. Where several events occurred, the board normally applies the single most appropriate percentage rather than adding them together, so ten minor problems do not equal 50%.
Special consideration is not a guarantee of a grade change. A 5% adjustment on a paper you scored 60% on may still leave you below the next grade boundary. It also requires evidence, and it must normally be submitted by the centre within about seven days of your last examination in that subject.
4. Absence, Missed Papers and Derived Grades |
If you miss an entire component for an acceptable reason - for example a hospital admission on the day - the board may calculate a grade from the components you did sit. This is sometimes called a derived or estimated grade, and it depends on how much of the assessment you completed; a substantial proportion, commonly at least half, is usually required.
Self-certification is generally not accepted. Medical evidence must be specific, dated, and normally signed by a doctor or other registered practitioner, and it must cover the dates of the examinations concerned.
If you walk out of an exam, or arrive too late to be admitted, that is usually treated as absence rather than disruption, unless the reason itself is acceptable. The centre should be told immediately so that the correct form of application can be made.
5. Malpractice and Security Breaches |
Malpractice means breaking the rules: unauthorised notes, a phone in the exam room, collusion, impersonation, plagiarism in coursework, or sharing a paper on social media. Outcomes range from a written warning to loss of marks for one component, disqualification from the whole qualification, and a ban from sitting exams for a fixed period.
Malpractice can also work in your favour. If a paper leaked before the exam, or another candidate's behaviour seriously disrupted the room, the board may remove the affected component, use alternative evidence, or adjust the grades of all affected candidates. These are whole-cohort decisions, not individual ones.
Note the important distinction: if someone else cheated, you are a witness and a possible beneficiary. If you cheated, you are the subject of a malpractice investigation and you have a right to respond in writing before a decision is made.
6. What Must Happen in the Exam Room |
Most successful disruption claims are won or lost in the first ten minutes after the incident, because that is when the official record is created.
Raise your hand immediately and tell the invigilator, even if the disruption seems minor or embarrassing.
Ask for the incident to be written into the examination room report, and check that the time and duration
