Every exam season the same question floods student group chats: can I bring a bottle of water into the exam hall? The short answer is yes at most centres, but only if the bottle is clear, completely unlabelled and permitted under the rules of your awarding body. The longer answer involves stationery, calculators, phones, tissues and a dozen small decisions that can quietly make or break your exam day.

Exam regulations are not designed to annoy you. They exist to guarantee three things: fairness, security and the integrity of your final grade. If one candidate has silent access to notes or the internet while another does not, the qualification loses its value for everyone.

Do a full pocket check the night before and again at the door: trouser pockets, blazer pockets, inside linings and the front compartment of your bag. It takes thirty seconds and removes the single biggest malpractice risk of your exam career.

Most centres require bags to be placed at the front or the back of the hall, well away from your desk. Coats may be worn or hung on the back of your chair, but the pockets must be completely empty.

Here is a trap that catches strong students every year. If your phone is switched off inside your bag and the bag is in the exam room, some boards still treat a phone ringing - or simply being present in the room - as malpractice. The safest option is to leave the phone at home or hand it to an invigilator at the door and collect it afterwards.

8. Medical Needs and Personal Items | 医疗需求与个人物品
Tissues are normally allowed, but invigilators may inspect them and you must not write on them. Asthma inhalers, insulin, epinephrine auto-injectors and prescribed medication are permitted, usually with prior notification to the exams officer.
