📚 UAT-UK Special Arrangements: Extra Time, Separate Rooms and Readers - Application Scope | UAT-UK
UAT-UK admissions tests - ESAT, TMUA and TARA - are high-stakes, computer-delivered tests sat at Pearson VUE test centres or approved school centres. Candidates with a disability, a long-term medical condition, a specific learning difficulty or even a temporary injury can apply for access arrangements such as 25% extra time, a separate room or a reader. This guide explains who can apply, what each arrangement actually covers, what evidence is required and how to avoid the administrative mistakes that cost candidates their adjustments.
1. What UAT-UK Access Arrangements Actually Cover | UAT-UK
Access arrangements are reasonable adjustments that remove a barrier caused by a disability or medical condition, without giving the candidate an unfair advantage over others. They change how the test is delivered, not what is tested. UAT-UK sets the policy; Pearson VUE and the approved centres deliver the arrangements on the day.
The main categories of arrangement you can request are:
Extra time (commonly 25%, exceptionally 50% or more).
A separate room, a small group room or a fully individual room.
A reader (human reader or computer read-aloud / text-to-speech).
A scribe, word processor, or assistive technology such as a screen magnifier or coloured overlay.
Supervised rest breaks, medical access arrangements and physical adjustments.
The single most important principle running through all of these is 'normal way of working'. An arrangement is far more likely to be approved if the candidate already uses it routinely in school tests, mock examinations and internal assessments. Arrangements invented a fortnight before the test are almost always refused.
2. Who Is Eligible to Apply |
Eligibility is based on need, evidence and history - not on a diagnosis label alone. A candidate needs a genuine functional difficulty that affects their performance under timed, formal conditions, plus documentary evidence and a record of the arrangement being used normally.
Typical eligible profiles include:
Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or dyspraxia.
ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, or significant anxiety and mental health conditions that are clinically documented.
Visual or hearing impairments, including candidates who use magnification, screen readers or British Sign Language.
Long-term medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, chronic fatigue or a physical disability.
Temporary conditions - a broken writing arm, a recent concussion, or surgery close to the test date.
English as an additional language, on its own, is generally not a ground for extra time in UAT-UK tests, because the tests are designed to be language-light and reasoning-based. Similarly, ordinary exam nerves or a single poor mock result are not sufficient evidence.
3. Extra Time: 25%, 50% and Beyond |
Extra time is the most commonly requested arrangement and the most commonly misunderstood. In practice the standard approved amount is 25% of the total test time, applied by the delivery software, which simply extends the on-screen timer. 50% is reserved for candidates with substantial, well-documented processing or reading difficulties.
When extra time is granted, candidates should expect:
The timer for each section is extended automatically - no manual calculation is needed on the day.
Extra time does not carry over between separately timed sections.
Extra time is combined with other arrangements, such as a separate room or a reader.
New section time = standard time × 1.25 (for 25% extra time)
A 40-minute section therefore becomes 50 minutes, and a 60-minute section becomes 75 minutes. Candidates should practise under the extended timing at least twice before the real test, because pacing strategies that work at standard speed often need to be rebuilt.
4. Separate Rooms and Individual Testing |
A separate room is not a reward and not a comfort measure - it is granted when the candidate's needs cannot be met in the main hall. There are three broad levels: a small group room shared with a handful of other candidates using arrangements, a separate room with a small number of candidates, and a fully individual room with one invigilator.
Typical reasons a separate room is approved:
The candidate uses a reader, scribe or read-aloud software that would disturb others.
The candidate needs supervised rest breaks and must move around without disrupting the room.
Distractibility, sensory sensitivity or anxiety that is clinically documented and affects performance.
Medical needs such as monitoring blood sugar, taking medication, or frequent toilet access.
The candidate reads aloud, vocalises, or uses a keyboard noisily.
One practical constraint matters enormously: test centres have only a limited number of separate rooms, and they are allocated first-come, first-served once approved. Book the test as early as the booking window allows, and never assume a room will still be free a week before the test date.
5. Reader Arrangements: Human Readers and Read-Aloud |
A reader removes the decoding barrier for candidates whose reading accuracy or speed is substantially below the level required. There are two delivery models. A human reader sits with the candidate and reads the question stems and options aloud. A computer reader, or text-to-speech function built into the delivery platform, reads the text aloud through headphones.
Rules that govern the reader role:
The reader must be independent - normally a trained centre invigilator, never a family member, friend or the candidate's own teacher.
The reader reads exactly what is printed: no paraphrasing, no explaining, no translating, no emphasis that hints at the answer.
The candidate controls the pace and can ask for a repeat of any part of the question.
The reader does not read the candidate's answers back unless this is separately approved as a checking arrangement.
Evidence normally required for a reader is a diagnostic assessment showing a standard score in reading accuracy or reading speed that is significantly below average, plus confirmation that the candidate uses a reader or read-aloud software as their normal way of working. Note that a candidate who needs only occasional help with unfamiliar vocabulary will not normally qualify.
6. Scribes, Word Processors and Assistive Technology |
UAT-UK tests such as ESAT and TMUA are predominantly multiple-choice, so a traditional scribe for free writing is relevant mainly where a test contains a constructed-response or typing component. Even so, a scribe or keyboard arrangement can be approved for candidates who cannot physically operate the mouse, keyboard or touchscreen because of a motor difficulty or injury.
Assistive technology requests that are commonly considered:
Screen magnification software or enlarged on-screen text and cursor size.
Text-to-speech or screen reader software with headphones.
Coloured overlays or a coloured background setting for visual stress.
Speech-to-text software where a written component exists.
An adjustable chair, footrest, wrist support or standing desk.
Any equipment or software must be approved in advance, must be tested at the centre before the test day, and must not be capable of storing, retrieving or transmitting information. Candidates are usually required to provide their own licensed software or hardware if the centre does not hold it.
7. Rest Breaks, Medical and Physical Arrangements |
Supervised rest breaks allow a candidate to pause without losing working time. The clock stops during the break, the candidate remains under supervision, and the break is normally taken in the same room or an adjacent supervised area. Rest breaks are not extra time and cannot be converted into extra working time.
Common medical and physical arrangements include:
Carrying and taking medication, insulin, an inhaler or an EpiPen in the test room.
Access to food and drink for medical reasons, including blood sugar management.
Toilet access without a formal break, escorted by an invigilator.
Seating near a door or exit, away from air conditioning or noise.
A support worker or sign language interpreter where permitted by the policy.
Temporary arrangements are also possible. If a candidate breaks an arm or suffers a concussion shortly before the test, they should contact UAT-UK and the test centre immediately with medical evidence, since short-notice adjustments can sometimes be arranged, including a free test-date change where the condition is severe.
8. Evidence: What You Must Submit |
Applications live or die on documentation. The evidence must show three things: that a genuine condition or difficulty exists, that it creates a functional barrier in timed tests, and that the requested arrangement is the candidate's normal way of working.
| 25% extra time / 25% 额外时间 | Diagnostic assessment with below-average processing or reading speed scores, plus school confirmation of normal use / 显示加工或阅读速度低于平均的诊断评估,加上学校确认平时使用 |
| 50% extra time / 50% 额外时间 | Multiple standardised scores in the very low range, specialist report, and a history of use in formal exams / 多项标准分处于极低区间、专家报告,以及正式考试中的使用历史 |
| Separate room / 单独考场 | Medical letter, clinical report, or evidence of sensory or attention needs / 医生证明、临床报告,或感官、注意力需求证据 |
| Rest breaks / 休息时间 | Medical evidence of a condition requiring regular breaks or monitoring / 需要定时休息或监测的疾病医疗证明 |
Documents must be legible, dated, in English or accompanied by a certified translation, and issued by an appropriately qualified professional. A GP letter, a specialist report, or an assessment by a qualified educational psychologist or specialist teacher-assessor are all acceptable forms of evidence depending on the arrangement requested.
9. Application Workflow and Deadlines |
The process is front-loaded: the request is flagged when the test is booked, and the evidence is submitted by a published deadline. Missing that deadline is the single most common reason candidates sit the test with no adjustments at all.
