📚 October Session Bursary Applications Close on 21 September 2026 |
Monday 21 September 2026 is the final day on which an application for exam-entry bursary support for the October examination series will be accepted. That date sits after the standard entry deadline at most centres, after the first round of fee quotes has been issued, and only a fortnight before the earliest October papers. Missing it rarely means simply paying more; in many cases it means not sitting the papers at all.
1. What the 21 September Deadline Actually Means | 9
It is a funding deadline, not an entry deadline. Entries for the October series are normally confirmed by the centre in August, and the fee invoice is generated at that point. The bursary panel therefore works with a fixed, already-quoted sum of money and decides how much of it a family should be asked to carry.
Because the invoice already exists, there is nothing vague about the application. You are not asking for an estimate; you are asking a panel to reduce a specific number. That is why documentary evidence matters more than persuasive writing.
Countdown: 21 September 2026 (Monday) → first October paper ≈ 14 days later
2. Who Qualifies for October Series Support |
Schemes differ between schools, colleges, private centres and charitable trusts, but almost every one of them funds applicants who fall into one of three broad groups. Read your centre's written policy before you write a single word of your statement, because eligibility wording differs sharply from centre to centre.
- Means-tested hardship: households receiving means-tested benefits, or with an income below the threshold set by the centre.
- Circumstantial hardship: care-experienced students, young carers, refugees and asylum seekers, students in temporary accommodation, or families hit by redundancy, bereavement or medical costs.
- Private and home-educated candidates: candidates entering as private candidates who pay fees directly and have no school fund to fall back on.
A common misunderstanding is that a bursary is only for the June series. Many centres hold a small contingency fund specifically for the October resit window, precisely because October entries are the ones students pay for themselves.
3. What a Bursary Usually Covers |
Support is normally paid directly to the centre against your entry invoice, not handed to you as cash. Understanding which lines on that invoice are fundable, and which are not, tells you how much you still have to find.
- Entry fees per paper, including resit papers. |
- Late-entry surcharges, if the delay was outside your control. |
- Practical endorsement, coursework moderation and oral examination fees. |
- Assessment costs for access arrangements, such as a standardised reading or processing assessment. |
- Travel to the exam centre, where the nearest centre is not local. |
Typically excluded are private tutoring, textbooks, laptops, revision courses and any fee already refunded or waived by the centre.
Approved support ≤ Total entry cost − Minimum family contribution
4. Building the Document Pack |
Panels reject applications far more often for incomplete evidence than for genuine ineligibility. Assemble the pack as a single indexed PDF, in the order the policy lists, and keep a duplicate.
- Completed application form, signed and dated. |
- Written fee quote or invoice from the exams officer, on centre letterhead. |
- Income evidence: benefit award letters, tax assessments or payslips covering the last three months. |
- Candidate statement of entry or provisional entry list showing paper codes. |
- A personal statement of 300–500 words explaining the specific financial barrier. | 300–500
- One supporting reference from a teacher, tutor or pastoral lead. |
- Evidence of circumstance where relevant: medical letters, care leaver documentation, asylum registration. |
5. A Week-by-Week Application Timeline |
The deadline is a single point, but the work is spread over ten weeks. If you begin in the second week of September you will almost certainly miss something, because income evidence and references both take time to obtain.
Work from the outside in: secure the invoice first, because every other document refers back to it. Then collect the financial evidence, then write the statement, then obtain the reference, then submit with a week to spare.
6. The Real Cost of Running Late |
Late entry is not a small administrative inconvenience. Surcharges are commonly calculated as a multiple of the standard fee, and some boards will only accept a late entry with the written approval of the head of centre, which a private candidate may not be able to obtain in time.
Total payable = (Paper A + Paper B + Paper C + …) × Late multiplier + Admin charge
A multiplier of 1.5 to 3.0 on four papers can double the cost of a whole October series. For a family already at the edge of affordability, that arithmetic can end the plan entirely.
7. Access Arrangements Run on a Separate Clock |
Funding and access arrangements are two different applications with two different deadlines, and students routinely confuse them. Extra time, a separate room, rest breaks, a reader, a scribe or a word processor must be applied for by the centre, usually months before the series.
If you are applying for a bursary to cover the cost of an assessment that supports an access arrangement, that assessment must be completed and written up before the board's submission window shuts. In practice this means starting in the spring, not in September.
8. Choosing October Papers Strategically |
Not every subject is available in every October series. Some boards run a narrow October window covering mainly international A Level and a limited set of IGCSE subjects, while others offer a broader list. Check the syllabus availability list before you promise anyone anything.
A defensible rule is to enter papers where you are one or two grades short of a target, and to avoid entering five papers to "see what happens". Each added paper multiplies both the fee and the revision load, and the bursary panel will read your paper list as evidence of planning.
9. Working Backwards from 21 September |
Treat 21 September as a milestone inside your revision plan, not as its starting gun. From that Monday you have roughly two weeks to the first paper, which is enough time to consolidate and almost no time to learn anything new.
Build the timetable from the first exam date backwards in weekly blocks, and protect one full mock sitting per subject before the end of September. Marking the mock honestly is worth more than a further chapter of notes.
Weekly study hours = Total syllabus hours ÷ Weeks available (≈ 8–10)
10. Seven Mistakes That Sink Applications |
Most refusals are procedural rather than moral. The panel is not judging whether you deserve help; it is checking whether the file in front of it meets a written standard.
- Assuming the school has applied on your behalf. |
- Applying without an invoice, using a verbal estimate instead. |
- Sending photocopies with no explanation of missing originals. |
- Writing a statement about hard work rather than about the financial barrier. |
- Submitting by post on Friday 18 September and relying on Monday delivery. | 9
- Applying to the board directly when the scheme is administered by the centre. |
- Failing to confirm in writing that funding was approved before the entry lock. |
11. Checklist and Key Dates |
Use the table below as a single tracking sheet. The bursary deadline of 21 September 2026 is fixed; everything before it can be moved forward, and moving it forward is the whole strategy.
| Late July – mid August | Standard entry deadline at many centres; entry confirmed | 多数考点的标准报名截止;报名确认 | Exams officer | 考务负责人 |
| Mid August | Request the written fee quote or invoice | 索取书面费用报价单或账单 | Student | 学生 |
| 7–14 Sept | Submit the pack; request the supporting reference | 提交材料包;索取支持性推荐信 | Student + referee | 学生与推荐人 |
| Early October | First October papers sat | 参加第一场十月考试 | Candidate | 考生 |
12. If the Answer Is No | 如果申请被拒绝
A refusal is usually a refusal of one particular scheme, not of all support. Ask the panel in writing which criterion was not met, then approach the next route: the centre's own hardship fund, a subject-specific charitable trust, a payment plan spread across the term, or a reduced paper list.
