Every autumn, a number of otherwise well-prepared candidates lose an entire exam session to a single missed hour. For the October 2026 series, the standard entry window closes at 18:00 UK time on 28 September 2026. This guide explains what that cut-off actually covers, how it translates into local time across the world, what happens if you cross it, and how to use the remaining weeks between entry and the first paper.
1. Why the October Series Exists |
Most A Level and IGCSE candidates sit their main papers in May and June. The October series serves a much narrower group: candidates who want to raise a grade, candidates whose summer result missed a university condition, and candidates who could not sit the summer papers at all.
Because the session is small, the subject list is restricted, the paper choice is narrower, and the administrative window is short. Missing the entry deadline therefore does not simply cost you a fee - it usually pushes you to the next summer session, which in a university application context can mean a full year of delay.
Treat 18:00 UK time on 28 September 2026 as a hard wall rather than a suggestion. Boards do not move it for individual candidates, and your centre needs working hours before it to process and upload your details.
2. What the Deadline Actually Covers |
"Entry deadline" is not the same thing as "exam date" or "results day". It is the last moment at which your centre can submit your candidate details, subject and syllabus codes, paper or unit codes, and any access arrangement requests to the board for the October series.
After that moment, the standard entry route closes. Anything submitted afterwards falls into late or very late entry, which is not guaranteed to be accepted for any given paper and always carries a higher charge.
A useful way to think about it: your entry has four parts, and all four must be correct before 18:00 - who you are, what subject you are entering, which papers you are sitting, and what access arrangements you need.
3. Which Boards and Qualifications Run in October |
October is not a universal session. It is offered mainly by the international boards, plus a small UK November resit route for core GCSE subjects. Because each board publishes its own key dates, the deadline that applies to one qualification may not apply to another.
|---|---|---|
| Pearson Edexcel International | Selected International AS/A Level and International GCSE subjects / 部分 International AS/A Level 与国际 GCSE 科目 | Through your registered centre / 通过注册考点 |
| Cambridge International | October/November series across many syllabuses / 众多大纲的 10-11 月考季 | Through your registered centre / 通过注册考点 |
| Oxford AQA International | Selected International AS/A Level and IGCSE subjects / 部分 International AS/A Level 与 IGCSE 科目 | Through your registered centre / 通过注册考点 |
| UK GCSE November resits | GCSE English Language and Mathematics for eligible candidates / 符合条件考生的 GCSE 英语与数学 | Through your school or centre / 通过学校或考点 |
Always open the board's own timetable document and find your exact syllabus code and paper code. Never rely on a friend's entry, a forum post or last year's PDF, because syllabus versions and paper codes change.
4. What Must Be Submitted Before 18:00 | 18 点前必须提交什么
-
Candidate identity: legal name exactly as it appears on your ID or passport, date of birth, candidate number, unique candidate identifier.
-
Subject and syllabus code: for example the current syllabus version of A Level Mathematics or A Level Chemistry, not the retired version.
-
Paper and unit codes: which units you are resitting, which tier you are sitting at, and whether the entry is cash-in for a full qualification or unit-only.
-
Access arrangements: extra time, separate room, reader, scribe, word processor, rest breaks, with supporting evidence attached.
-
Payment or confirmation of payment: entries are usually only transmitted once the centre has received the fee.
If any one of these five items is missing, the entry is not "nearly done" - it is not done at all, and the clock keeps running.
5. Time Zones: 18:00 UK Time Around the World | 时区换算：英国时间 18 点在世界各地是几点
On 28 September 2026 the United Kingdom is on British Summer Time, which is UTC+1. So the deadline moment in absolute terms is 17:00 UTC. Everything below follows from that single fact.
UTC (28 Sep) = 09:00 PDT = 12:00 EDT = 21:00 GST = 01:00 CST (29 Sep) = 02:00 JST (29 Sep)
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | PDT (UTC−7) | 10:00, 28 September |
| New York | EDT (UTC−4) | 13:00, 28 September |
| London | BST (UTC+1) | 18:00, 28 September |
| Dubai | GST (UTC+4) | 21:00, 28 September |
| New Delhi | IST (UTC+5:30) | 22:30, 28 September |
| Beijing / Hong Kong / Singapore | UTC+8 | 01:00, 29 September |
| Tokyo / Seoul | UTC+9 | 02:00, 29 September |
| Sydney | AEST (UTC+10) | 03:00, 29 September |
| Auckland | NZDT (UTC+13) | 06:00, 29 September |
Candidates in East Asia and Australasia are the most exposed, because the board deadline falls after midnight on 29 September. Points to note: North America is comfortably earlier, Europe and the Middle East are in the same evening, and East Asia has already rolled into the next calendar day.
The trap is deeper than the time zone. Most centres set an internal deadline five to ten working days before the board deadline, so a school in Shanghai may in practice require your paperwork on 18 or 21 September, not 29 September.
6. Late Entry, Waiting Lists and Higher Fees |
Late entry is a concession, not a right. Boards may accept it for some papers and refuse others, particularly where a paper requires a practical set-up, a speaking examiner, or a listening room with specific equipment.
A waiting list is not a place. If a paper has no spare seat, no examiner or no lab slot in your time zone, being on a list changes nothing, and you may only find out after the late entry window has also closed.
