📚 TARA Critical Thinking: Mastering the 22-Question, 40-Minute Module | TARA
TARA - the Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions - is a general academic reasoning test used by a number of UK universities to select students for specific undergraduate courses. Its Critical Thinking module gives you 22 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, which works out at roughly 1 minute 49 seconds per question. This is not a knowledge test: there is no syllabus to memorise and no content to revise. What you can train is the set of reasoning moves that the question writers reward, and the pacing discipline that stops those moves from collapsing under time pressure. This guide breaks the module down question type by question type.
TARA(Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions,学术推理入学测试)是一项通用学术推理测试,被多所英国大学用于部分本科专业的选拔。
1. What the Critical Thinking Module Actually Tests |
TARA is delivered on computer at test centres and, in the published format, consists of two reasoning modules: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. The Critical Thinking module presents short written arguments - usually 60 to 120 words - followed by a single-best-answer question with four or five options. You are being tested on whether you can identify what an argument claims, what it quietly assumes, what would weaken it, and what can legitimately be inferred from it. It is a discipline of evidence, not of opinion.
- Item type: single best answer multiple choice.
- Question count: 22 questions in the module.
- Time limit: 40 minutes, with the timer running automatically.
- Average pace: about 109 seconds per question.
- Marking: one mark per correct answer; the published guidance applies no negative marking, so never leave a blank.
- Equipment: no calculator, no dictionary, no rough paper beyond what the centre provides.
Because admissions tests are periodically revised, always check the current official specification and the confirmed module structure before you build a revision plan around any single number.
2. The Arithmetic of 22 Questions in 40 Minutes | 22
Most students lose marks in this module not because they cannot reason but because they spend three minutes on question 4 and then rush questions 15 to 22 in a panic. Start by internalising the basic division, then plan a three-pass strategy around it.
40 min ÷ 22 questions ≈ 1.82 min ≈ 109 s per question
Three consequences follow from that number. First, you cannot afford to read a stimulus twice slowly; your first read has to be purposeful. Second, you must be willing to abandon a question after roughly 150 seconds and return to it later - sunk time is the enemy. Third, because there is no penalty for a wrong answer in the published format, a flagged educated guess is always better than a blank.
|---|---|---|
| First sweep 第一遍 | 10 minutes | Question 6 completed |
| Halfway 中点 | 20 minutes | Question 11 completed |
| Third sweep 第三段 | 30 minutes | Question 17 completed |
| Guessing pass 猜测轮 | 35 minutes | All 22 answered |
| Review 复查 | 40 minutes | Flags revisited |
3. The Universal Toolkit: Argument Anatomy |
Every stimulus in this module is built from the same five parts, and recognising them is what turns a wall of text into a diagram. The conclusion is the claim the writer wants you to accept. The premises are the reasons offered for it. The assumption is the unstated bridge between premises and conclusion. Background is context that carries no argumentative weight. An intermediate conclusion is a claim that is supported by earlier material and then supports the main conclusion - it is the most common trap in conclusion questions.
Apply the therefore test: insert the word "therefore" in front of a sentence. If the passage still reads logically, you have found a conclusion. If it reads absurdly, you are looking at a premise. Then ask the gap question: what must be true for this conclusion to follow from these premises? That single question generates the answer to roughly half the paper.
4. Type 1: Main Conclusion and Argument Structure |
Typical stems: "Which of the following best expresses the main conclusion of the argument?", "The writer's main point is that...". The technique is mechanical: strip out examples, statistics and concessions, then find the sentence that everything else is trying to establish. Signal words - therefore, so, hence, it follows that, clearly, the point is - usually sit immediately before it.
- Too narrow: an option that restates one premise or a single example.
- Too broad: an option that generalises beyond what the passage claims.
- Intermediate conclusion trap: a mid-argument claim that is itself supported by premises.
- Reversal trap: the opposite of the conclusion, dressed in the same vocabulary.
A reliable check is to ask whether the option still works when you delete every other sentence. A genuine main conclusion survives that deletion; a premise does not.
5. Type 2: Assumption Questions |
Typical stems: "Which of the following is an assumption made in the argument?", "The argument depends on which of the following?". An assumption is an unstated premise that the reasoning needs. There are two species. A necessary assumption must hold for the argument to work at all. A sufficient assumption would, if added, be enough on its own to make the conclusion follow. Most TARA-style items test the necessary kind.
Negation test: negate the option → if the argument collapses, it is a necessary assumption
Run the negation test on every candidate. If denying an option leaves the argument perfectly intact, that option is not required - no matter how true or sensible it sounds. Two further filters matter: reject options that are stronger than the argument needs ("all" when the argument only requires "most"), and reject options that merely repeat a stated premise.
6. Type 3: Strengthen and Weaken |
Typical stems: "Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument?", "Which of the following would best support the writer's conclusion?". These questions are gap-hunting exercises. Find the assumption that the argument leans on, then look for the option that attacks it (weakening) or shores it up (strengthening).
Two rules of thumb decide close calls. First, the strongest answer is the one that engages the central gap, not a side detail - an option that damages a peripheral example will not move the conclusion. Second, watch the quantifiers: "some" and "a few" are weak weapons, "all" and "none" are strong but only help if the argument itself is that general. Options that are true in real life but irrelevant to the stated reasoning are a favourite distractor.
7. Type 4: Flaw and Reasoning-Error Questions |
Typical stems: "The reasoning in the argument is flawed because...", "Which of the following describes the error in the writer's reasoning?". Here you must name the defect. A fixed checklist of recurring errors covers the overwhelming majority of items, so learning to label them by name is genuinely worth the effort.
- Correlation treated as causation: two things occur together, so one is said to cause the other, with no mechanism or control.
- Hasty generalisation: a sweeping conclusion from a small or unrepresentative sample.
- False dilemma: only two options are presented when more exist.
- Circular reasoning: the conclusion is smuggled into the premises.
- Equivocation: one word shifts meaning between premises and conclusion.
- Appeal to authority or popularity: a claim is defended by who believes it rather than by evidence.
- Attacking the person: the arguer's character is criticised instead of the argument.
- Confusing necessary and sufficient conditions: "if" is silently converted into "only if".
- Part-whole error: a property of members is assumed to be a property of the group, or vice versa.
- Post hoc reasoning: an event follows another, so the earlier one is blamed.
Answer options for flaw questions usually describe the error in plain English rather than naming it, so translate as you read: "the writer treats an outcome that happened after an event as if it were caused by it" is simply post hoc reasoning.
