📚 TMUA Official Logic and Proof Notes: The Right Order to Use Them | TMUA
Every year thousands of candidates download the official TMUA Notes on Logic and Proof, read them once in September, nod along, and then discover in October that Paper 2 still feels like a foreign language. The problem is almost never the notes themselves; it is the order in which they are used. This article sets out a staged sequence - baseline, logic, proof, interleaving, timed application - and explains why each stage must come before the next.
1. What the TMUA Actually Tests | TMUA
The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is not an A Level recall test. It assumes you already know the content of A Level Mathematics and then asks what you can do with it under pressure. The two skills it isolates are speed of fluent manipulation and precision of logical reasoning, and the second one is the one the official logic and proof notes were written to support.
TMUA(大学入学数学考试)不是 A Level 的知识回忆测试。
Fluent manipulation: algebra, indices, surds, functions, sequences, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, calculus. |
Logical precision: implication, equivalence, quantifiers, counterexamples, necessary and sufficient conditions. |
Reading speed: 20 questions in 75 minutes, with no calculator and no negative marking. |
2. The Two Papers and What Each Demands |
Paper 1 is called Applications of Mathematical Knowledge. The questions are mostly standard school mathematics with a twist: a disguised substitution, a non-obvious range, a graph you must interpret rather than plot. Paper 2 is called Mathematical Reasoning, and it deliberately tests definitions, converses, contrapositives, quantifier order and proof strategy. A candidate who is strong at Paper 1 but has never read the logic notes will typically lose most of Paper 2.
| Paper | Focus | Dominant Skill | Notes That Help Most |
| Paper 1 | Applying known mathematics | Fluent manipulation | Logic notes (partially) |
| Paper 2 | Reasoning and proof | Logical precision | Logic + proof notes (fully) |
3. What Counts as Official Material |
Before you can order your materials, you must know exactly what is on the shelf. The official TMUA ecosystem is small, which is good news, because it means every page can be read twice rather than skimmed once. Anything outside this list, including MAT and STEP papers, is useful but is not TMUA-shaped.
Official Notes on Logic and Proof (a PDF covering implication, quantifiers, proof types).
Test specification, which states the assumed prior knowledge. |
Specimen papers and past papers, with answer keys and worked solutions. |
Score conversion tables, so you can translate raw marks into the 1.0-9.0 scale. |
4. Why the Order Matters |
Logic notes teach you the vocabulary of reasoning; proof notes teach you the sentences built from that vocabulary. Reading them in the reverse order is like memorising chess openings before you know how the pieces move. You will recognise the words 'proof by contradiction' but you will not be able to decide whether contradiction is the right tool for a given statement.
There is a second reason. The logic notes are short and abstract; they are cheap to read early and they immediately change how you read every subsequent question. The proof notes are longer and more example-driven; they only pay off once the abstract layer is in place. Front-loading the cheap, high-leverage material is the single most efficient sequencing decision available to you.
5. Stage 0: Baseline Before Notes |
Do not open the notes first. Sit one full specimen paper under real conditions - 75 minutes per paper, no calculator, no phone, no breaks. Mark it honestly and split your errors into three buckets: careless slips, content gaps, and reasoning gaps. Only the third bucket is what the logic and proof notes are designed to fix.
Careless slips: you knew the method but mis-multiplied or misread. |
Content gaps: a topic you never learned, such as binomial expansion of a fractional power. |
Reasoning gaps: you could not tell a converse from a contrapositive, or you accepted an example as a proof. |
This baseline also gives you a number to beat. Without it, every later improvement feels imaginary and every setback feels terminal.
6. Stage 1: The Logic Notes Come First | 阶段一:先读逻辑笔记
Read the logic section of the official notes in one sitting, then rewrite it from memory on a single sheet. The aim is not comprehension in the passive sense but instant recall of six or seven core equivalences. If you cannot state the contrapositive rule without hesitating, you are not ready to move on.
p ⇒ q ⇔ ¬q ⇒ ¬p
¬(∀x, P(x)) ⇔ ∃x, ¬P(x)
The first line is the contrapositive rule; the second is the negation of a universal statement. Between them they account for a large fraction of Paper 2 questions, because most wrong options in Paper 2 are built from a broken quantifier or a swapped implication.
Day 1-2: read once, rewrite from memory, check against the original. |
Day 3-4: build a one-page glossary of every symbol used in the notes. |
Day 5-7: for each definition, write one true example and one false example. |
7. Stage 2: The Proof Notes Come Second |
Only now do you open the proof section. The reason is that proof notes are a catalogue of techniques, and a catalogue is useless without a way to choose between entries. The choice criterion is almost always structural: what shape is the statement, and what shape must a proof of it have?
Statement of the form 'for all x, P(x)' - try a direct proof, or find one counterexample to falsify.
Statement of the form 'if p then q' - consider the contrapositive when q is a simple negative.
Statement of the form 'there exists x such that P(x)' - construct it explicitly.
Statement of the form 'if and only if' - prove both directions separately. |
Then learn the necessary-and-sufficient vocabulary properly, because TMUA uses it constantly and uses it loosely in the distractors.
A is sufficient for B ⇔ A ⇒ B ⇔ B is necessary for A
With both note sets read, stop reading and start interleaving. Alternate blocks: twenty minutes of Paper 1 questions, then ten minutes of Paper 2 reasoning questions, then back. Interleaving feels harder than blocking, and that difficulty is the point - it forces your brain to select a method rather than rehearse one.
Attach each proof technique to at least two concrete Paper 1 topics.
When you get a Paper 1 question wrong, ask whether the error was algebraic or logical. | Paper 1
Rewrite every error as a one-line rule, not a full solution. |
9. Stage 4: Paper 2 Under the Clock | 阶段四:限时 Paper 2
Only after four to six weeks of staged work do you switch to full timed Paper 2 sets. The arithmetic of the timing is unforgiving: 75 minutes for 20 questions gives 3.75 minutes per question, and some reasoning questions require two independent checks. Learn to flag and move on at the 4-minute mark.
20 questions ÷ 75 minutes = 3.75 minutes per question
First pass: answer everything you can settle in under a minute. |
Second pass: return to flagged reasoning questions with full logic discipline. |
Never leave a blank - there is no penalty for a wrong answer. |
10. A Twelve-Week Order You Can Copy |
The table below assumes roughly six hours per week and an autumn test date. Adjust the lengths, not the order; the sequence is what produces the gains, not the exact number of days.
| Weeks | Material | Output |
| 1 | Specimen paper, untimed study | Baseline score + error buckets |
| 2-3 | Logic notes | One-page symbol and equivalence sheet |
| 4-5 | Proof notes | Technique-to-statement mapping table |
| 6-8 | Interleaved Paper 1 and Paper 2 | Error log with one-line rules |
| 9-10 | Timed Paper 1 sets | Raw score trend above baseline |
| 11-12 | Timed Paper 2 sets | Stable score under full conditions |
11. Ordering Mistakes That Cost Real Marks |
Most candidates do not fail because they lack ability; they fail because they spent their best hours on the wrong stage. The four mistakes below account for the majority of disappointing TMUA results among otherwise strong mathematicians.
Reading the proof notes first, and treating proofs as recipes to memorise. |
Doing past papers before reading the logic notes, then misdiagnosing logic errors as carelessness. |
Using the notes only as a lookup table after a question goes wrong. |
Skipping quantifiers because they look like formal decoration rather than examinable content. |
The fix is always the same: go back one stage, spend three days there, then move forward again.
12. The Error Log and the Revision Loop |
The logic and proof notes are not a one-time read; they are a lens you reapply every week. Keep a single running document with three columns: the question, the logic rule it tested, and the one-line correction. Once a week, re-read the notes' table of contents and try to recall a question from your log that matches each entry.
If you cannot recall an example for an entry, that entry is not yet learned. |
If an entry has more than five logged errors, it needs a dedicated half-day.
Review the whole log in the final week, not new material. |
Sequence plus repetition beats intensity every time. Read the logic notes before the proof notes, apply them before you time them, and keep returning to both until the vocabulary of reasoning becomes the way you read ordinary mathematics.
