Every cycle, a number of strong applicants discover in September that the two courses they care about most ask for different ESAT modules. A conflict arises when the two courses you intend to apply for require different module sets, and the union of those sets contains more than three modules. Fill this in before you talk to anyone. Nine out of ten "conflicts" turn out to be a misreading of the requirements, often because a course that looks fixed actually offers a choice in one slot.

Naming the type matters, because it determines which of the following steps you actually need to take. A Type A applicant can stop reading after Section 4; a Type C applicant should treat Sections 5 to 8 as urgent.

4. Step 3 - Hunt for the Flexible Slot | 第三步：寻找"弹性位置"
Many science courses are written as "Mathematics 1 plus two from Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry, Biology". Broad natural-sciences and some engineering-adjacent courses often work this way, precisely because applicants come from different specialisms.

If Course B has a free slot and Course A is fixed, there is no real conflict: you simply choose the module that Course A demands, as long as Course B accepts it. Read the official wording line by line and look for phrases such as "any two of", "one of the following" or "normally".

Watch the footnotes as well. Some departments state that a particular module is "strongly recommended" for a given specialism without making it compulsory, which leaves you room. Where a recommendation exists, weigh it seriously: sitting a module that the department expects, but not requiring, can still strengthen your profile.

If the conflict survives Step 3, email both admissions offices before you commit. Ask specific questions, give the exact course codes, and request a written reply you can keep. Informal phone answers are not reliable enough to plan a test registration around.
