Every October, thousands of candidates sit the ESAT, the Engineering and Science Admissions Test used by Cambridge and Imperial College London. Most of the anxiety around this test is about timing and question difficulty. Yet the single most expensive mistake is not academic at all - it is administrative. Once you have confirmed and paid for your ESAT booking, your module selection is locked. There is no edit button, no swap, no "add a fourth module" option. If you choose the wrong three modules, the only official route is to cancel the whole booking and book a brand new one, paying again, subject to availability and deadlines.

1. What ESAT Is and Who Needs It | ESAT 是什么，谁需要考
ESAT stands for the Engineering and Science Admissions Test. It is produced by UAT-UK (University Admissions Tests UK) and delivered on computer at Pearson VUE test centres. It replaced the old NSAA and ENGAA papers at Cambridge, and it is also required by a large number of courses at Imperial College London. Typical users include applicants for Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Natural Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge, plus a wide range of engineering and physics courses at Imperial.

Two features of ESAT shape everything else in this article. First, it is a single-attempt test: you sit it once per admissions cycle, and there is no "retake next month" option. Second, it is modular: you do not sit one big paper, you sit three separate 40-minute modules chosen from a menu of five.

2. The Five Modules and the Three-Module Rule | 五个模块与"三模块"规则
The ESAT menu contains five modules: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every candidate. You then choose two further modules, giving a total of three. You cannot sit four modules, and you cannot sit fewer than three. All three are sat in one session, back to back, on the same day.

That works out at about 89 seconds per question, with no calculator allowed and no negative marking for wrong answers. In other words, the arithmetic is simple but the time is brutal.

3. Which Combination Does Your Course Require? | 你的专业要求哪三个模块？
The two universities that use ESAT publish module requirements per course, and they are not all the same. A science-heavy engineering course will want Mathematics 2 and Physics; a chemical or biological course will want Chemistry or Biology. The table below shows the typical patterns, but treat it as a map rather than a legal document - requirements are reviewed every admissions cycle.
