UAT-UK stands for University Admissions Tests UK. It is a testing operation run jointly by Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Pearson VUE, created after Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing closed its doors. Rather than each university building its own test centre network, UAT-UK delivers computer-based tests at Pearson VUE centres in the UK and internationally, and sends results directly to the universities that have registered the candidate.

The practical consequences for candidates are significant. Everything is sat at a keyboard, not on paper. Results are released quickly, so universities can use them in shortlisting before interviews. And because one provider runs several tests, a candidate applying to Cambridge and Warwick can sit the TMUA once and have the score sent to both.

UAT-UK currently delivers three tests. Each targets a different kind of applicant, and confusing them is one of the most common errors in Year 12 planning.

- ESAT - Engineering and Science Admissions Test, replacing the old ENGAA and NSAA. Candidates sit Mathematics 1 plus two further modules chosen from Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- TMUA - Test of Mathematics for University Admission. Two papers: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge and Mathematical Reasoning.
- TARA - Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions, the newest addition, designed to measure general reasoning rather than subject knowledge.

Note that ESAT and TMUA scores are reported on the same 1.0 - 9.0 scale. Around 5.0 typically sits near the middle of the candidature, so a score of 7.0 or above is generally strong, while 3.0 or below signals that the underlying content needs rebuilding rather than more practice papers.

UAT-UK tests run in two main windows: an October session and a January session. The October session is the one that matters for Cambridge applicants, because Cambridge needs scores before it issues interview invitations. Oxford's own tests are also sat in October, which means a student applying to both Oxford and Cambridge in different subjects can end up with two tests in the same fortnight.
