📚 UAT-UK October vs January: Which Sitting Must You Choose? | UAT-UK
Every autumn, thousands of applicants open the UAT-UK booking portal and hit the same question: should I sit the test in October or in January? For most candidates the two windows are genuinely interchangeable, and the answer depends on nothing more than how much preparation time you need. For anyone applying to Oxford or Cambridge, however, the choice is not a choice at all - one of the two sittings is effectively closed to you. Choosing the wrong one is one of the very few admissions errors that cannot be repaired later in the cycle.
1. What UAT-UK Is, and Why the Sitting Matters | UAT-UK
UAT-UK (University Admissions Tests UK) is the testing consortium that delivers the admissions tests required by Cambridge, Imperial College London and a growing list of UK universities. It runs three main tests: ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test), TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) and TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions), all sat at Pearson VUE test centres rather than in schools.
Every UAT-UK test is offered in two windows within a single admissions cycle: an October sitting and a January sitting. They are alternatives, not resits - you may normally sit a given test only once per cycle. That single rule is what turns the "October or January" question into a genuinely high-stakes decision.
Important: exact dates, deadlines and rules are republished each cycle. Always verify on the official UAT-UK website and on your target university's admissions pages before booking.
