Phones and watches are the two items most likely to stop an IELTS candidate at the door. The test is run jointly by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press and Assessment, and their candidate terms say the same thing: electronic devices must be switched off and left with your belongings outside the test room, and watches are not allowed inside at all. Candidates also agree to be scanned for devices at any point during the day, not only on arrival. What follows is drawn from the official test day guidance and the candidate terms themselves, so it can be checked against the source before test day.
The candidate terms allow exactly two items into the test room: the identity document used when booking, and a bottle of water that is transparent and carries no label. Stationery is excluded, because the centre provides black ink pens for Writing on Paper, so pencils, erasers and pencil cases stay outside. British Council test day advice adds two practical rules: no food in the room, and phones and other electronics switched off and left in the care of staff. The definition of an electronic device is wider than most candidates assume. Fitness trackers, wireless earbuds and recorders sit in the same category as a phone whenever they can connect, store or exchange information, and all of them belong in the belongings area. The identity check is the part treated as a formality, yet IELTS states plainly that a candidate who brings the wrong document, or forgets it, cannot sit the test that day.
Watches are named in the rules because of smartwatches. A watch with a screen and storage cannot be inspected at a glance, so rather than judging devices model by model, the IELTS partners keep them out of the room and put a clock on the wall of every test room; IELTS Online shows a timer on screen. UK school exams follow the same logic. JCQ's Instructions for Conducting Examinations for 2024-25 bar candidates from having a watch, naming analogue, digital and smart models, which removes the argument about whether a particular watch counts as a device. Candidates who turn up wearing one pay a price beyond a walk back to the belongings area: the Listening section is already running while they queue. The wall clock is also easier to work with, since Reading and Writing each get about 60 minutes and two glances are enough to tell whether you are on schedule.
One line in the candidate terms is easy to skim past: a candidate may be electronically scanned for devices at any time on the test day; the scan is a routine part of the day rather than a response to suspicion, and invigilators may carry a handheld detector when they walk the rows. Registration checks the ID used at booking and photographs each candidate for the Test Report Form; some centres add a fingerprint scan, as the British Council's test day advice notes. Candidates booking IELTS for UKVI should allow more time, because visa and immigration tests have to be taken in person at an authorised centre (UKVI requires an extra security layer for its Secure English Language Tests, as set out in the gov.uk guidance on SELT providers), and with IELTS Online verification happens before the test begins, when a remote proctor uses a room scan to check the desk and screen area; the IELTS Online terms state that a candidate who refuses consent for audio or video recording has the test cancelled without a refund.
A phone or a watch in the test room is not treated as a marking issue. Under the candidate terms, anyone who takes unauthorised items into the room does not receive a result and is not eligible for a refund or a transfer. If malpractice is suspected, or a candidate does something that could damage the integrity and security of IELTS, results can be cancelled or withheld, the fee is not returned, and a ban of up to five years is possible. The consequences also travel beyond the test centre: details of proven or suspected malpractice may be shared with organisations that recognise IELTS, including governments and visa authorities, and serious cases can lead to prosecution. A result can also be held back while a review is under way. UK school exams show how quickly this escalates. In a case published by JCQ, a candidate took a phone out of a pocket during an exam; the awarding body found a breach for possession of an unauthorised item, awarded 0 marks for the paper, and the candidate failed the qualification. Ofqual's figures for the summer 2025 series record 2,225 malpractice cases involving mobile phones and smart devices, 44.3% of all student malpractice, the largest category in every summer series since 2018.
The three test modes differ in how tightly they are supervised, and the device rules follow. The paper-based test is taken at a centre that supplies black ink pens, so no personal stationery goes in with you, and a replacement pen is available by raising a hand. The computer-delivered test is also taken at a centre, with a timer on screen, the same identity checks, and answers typed directly into the system. IELTS Online adds a step at home: a phone or tablet camera is used for a room scan so the remote proctor can see your desk, monitor and keyboard area, and afterwards the device must be switched off and placed out of reach. Only one screen is allowed during the test, headphones are not permitted, and there is a single five-minute break between sections, as the IELTS Online pages and terms describe. Candidates taking a test for a UK visa still have to attend an authorised centre, so the at-home option is closed to them.
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one session of 2 hours 40 minutes with no breaks, and Speaking may be scheduled on the same day or up to a week either side. A short pre-flight routine covers most problems: bring the ID that matches your booking and has not expired, leave early enough to absorb the photograph, verification and security checks, use the toilet before going in, and check that your water bottle is transparent with the label removed. The recurring mistake is a phone set to silent and left in a pocket. Silent is not switched off, a scanner will still pick it up, and the belongings area is the only reliable place for it. In the room, raise your hand if the Listening recording is unclear instead of adjusting equipment or changing seats, read the word limits before you start writing, and stay in your seat at the end until an invigilator signals that you may leave, since leaving early or walking out mid-test can be recorded as an incident.
Turning the rules into preparation habits saves energy on the day: when you practise Listening, Reading and Writing at home, time yourself with a wall clock or the computer clock rather than a watch, so reading a clock in the test room is already familiar. Run at least one mock test with the real procedure, with the phone in another room and nothing on the desk except a pen and some rough paper, and write the word limits next to the questions while you practise, because IELTS Writing Task 1 requires at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250, and a short answer loses marks directly. Check your identity document before booking ends, including its expiry date and the spelling of your name against your registration; five minutes there is cheaper than being turned away at the door.
