The QS World University Rankings publish once a year, and behind the total score sits a weighted sum of five lenses. The 2027 edition was released on 18 June 2026 with 1,504 institutions included, and sustainability accounts for 5% of it. Many applicants scroll past that single percentage figure on the assumption that it has nothing to do with their application. In practice the source, calculation and limits of that 5% are not explained on the main ranking page at all, because the score arrives from a separate ranking project.
The current weighting table cuts the total score into five blocks: research and discovery at 50%, employability and outcomes at 20%, global engagement at 15%, learning experience at 10%, and sustainability at 5%. Research alone takes half the total through academic reputation at 30% and citations per faculty at 20%. Global engagement is split evenly across international faculty ratio, international research network and international student ratio, while learning experience is left with a single indicator, the faculty student ratio. Sustainability is the newest of the five and the only one that scores a university as an employer and a community member, not merely as a teaching and research operation.
Sustainability did not start inside the total score. The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings, published on 27 June 2023, added three new indicators at once: sustainability, employment outcomes and international research network. QS describes that edition as the point where sustainability became a core metric of the flagship ranking. In the same release, the University of California, Berkeley was the only institution to score a perfect 100 on the new sustainability indicator, with the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia close behind at 99.9. QS also states on its own site that it was the first major ranking provider to include sustainability as an indicator in its core rankings.
The sustainability score used in the flagship ranking is not calculated in-house, but lifted from the standalone QS Sustainability Rankings. The indicator page on the QS support site states plainly that an institution's score is drawn from that separate project, and that the world ranking only applies its 5% weighting to the result. The same score feeds the QS Europe Region Rankings, also at 5%. Data comes from three places: material submitted by institutions, the QS academic and employer reputation surveys, and third party sources including the United Nations, UNESCO and the World Bank. A university that wants to move this figure therefore has to change its position across the indicators of a separate ranking project, not simply report a lower energy bill.
The Sustainability Rankings divides its total into three categories, with environmental impact and social impact at 45% each and governance at 10%. Environmental impact is built from three lenses: environmental education, environmental research and environmental sustainability. The heaviest single indicator is academic reputation for earth and environmental science at 10%, which measures how strongly the relevant disciplines are nominated in the academic survey. Research impact against the UN sustainable development goals carries 9%, alumni innovation impact 5%, impact through public and third sector alumni 4%, and climate and sustainability courses 3%. Research related measures together account for 35% of the whole ranking, more than any single indicator.
Social impact is made up of five lenses: employability and opportunities, equality, health and wellbeing, impact of education, and knowledge exchange. Research impact tied to employment related sustainable development goals carries 4% and employer reputation 3%, with the remaining indicators sitting between 1% and 2%. Knowledge exchange looks at what a university produces with industry, government and community partners. Equality looks at the fairness of admissions and staff composition, while health and wellbeing brings medical research and public service into the score. Impact of education measures what graduates contribute to society rather than their starting salaries, and social impact carries exactly the same weight as environmental impact.
Governance carries 10%, the smallest of the three categories and the one added in the 2024 edition. It is judged on institutional arrangements that can be checked publicly: a published ethics and anti-corruption policy, a commitment to open access publishing, and staff dedicated to sustainability work. It also looks at whether the student union is democratically elected and whether governance and financial reporting are public. Staff ratings of their own institution's ethics count as well. The common thread is that sustainability is treated as a management responsibility rather than a communications theme, so planting trees and swapping light bulbs earns nothing here. QS describes governance as the foundation for progress on both the social and environmental sides.
The 2024 edition also added a set of policy citation metrics, one each for environmental, social and governance themes, weighted at 1% apiece. They do not measure how often a paper is cited by other academics, but how often an institution's research is cited in policy documents, including government white papers, parliamentary reports and NGO publications. The weighting is small, yet the signal is direct: it asks whether research leaves the academic literature and reaches public decision making. For a student heading towards politics, economics or environmental policy, this indicator says more than an overall rank does, though three percent in total means it should be read as a bonus rather than a deciding factor. QS states that the metric assesses the citation impact of an institution's research on policy work.
Entry to the Sustainability Rankings comes with a precondition. An institution must first be eligible for the world university rankings, a regional ranking or a subject ranking, and business schools are excluded for now. Two further thresholds follow: a non-zero score for research impact on the environmental sustainable development goals, and non-zero scores in at least two of the four social research indicators covering employment, equality, health and wellbeing, and education. A university that misses that line simply does not appear, so there is no 5% score to convert into the flagship ranking. A common mistake is to infer this figure from an overall position, when some institutions on the list carry an empty sustainability score.
The ranking is neither opt-in nor opt-out. Institutions that do not submit data are assessed on public information and previous years' submissions. Universities send material through the QS platform, QS draws on its own academic and employer reputation surveys, and the results are cross checked against third party sources including the United Nations, UNESCO, the World Bank and bibliographic databases. Several items are collected without carrying weight, among them annual energy consumption, scope three emissions, annual water use, and the number of scholarships covering half or all of tuition fees. Whether sustainability training is compulsory each year, and whether the institution uses tools such as the TASK assessment, are recorded in the same way. QS notes that these items are captured first and weighted later, so what a university submits today may not show up immediately.
The Sustainability Rankings has grown almost threefold since its pilot. The earliest version appeared in October 2022 with 700 institutions taking part, and from 2023 it became a standalone annual ranking. The 2024 edition, published on 5 December 2023, covered 1,397 institutions across 95 countries and territories, with the governance category added in that cycle. The 2025 edition, released on 10 December 2024, covered more than 1,740 universities in 107 locations. The 2026 edition came out in November 2025 as the fourth version, described in English materials as more than 2,000 institutions across 108 locations and in Chinese materials as close to 2,000.
Lund University in Sweden leads the 2026 edition with a perfect 100, topping both environmental impact and governance. The University of Toronto is second at 99.8 and University College London third. The rest of the top ten includes Edinburgh, the University of British Columbia, the London School of Economics, Imperial College London, UNSW Sydney, McGill and Manchester. LSE climbed from joint 39th to sixth, the largest move of the cycle, while ETH Zurich and the University of California, Berkeley dropped to joint 11th, Oxford sits 14th and Bristol 19th. The United Kingdom holds 30 of the top 100 places against 16 for the United States, a split that often surprises applicants who assume the reverse. The United States still has the most institutions overall, with 240 ranked against 163 for mainland China, 109 for the United Kingdom and 103 for India.
Five percent of a total score is a limited lever, and one way to feel the arithmetic is to push this indicator from zero to a perfect hundred: the effect on the overall result is five points on a hundred point scale. That makes it a poor reason to reverse a shortlist, but a useful way to check fit. For environmental science, energy, public health or social policy courses, the lens level scores inside the standalone ranking say far more than an overall position does, and course level data can be checked through the student office's Discover Uni pages. A common mistake is to read this figure as a signal of admission difficulty, when what it measures is institutional behaviour rather than entry requirements. QS itself describes sustainability as an increasingly important issue for students when choosing where to study.
