ESAT module choices are locked in at the moment of booking, and UAT-UK states in its own words that they cannot be changed without cancelling and re-booking; the test centre cannot swap modules on the day of the test. This article walks through the whole cancellation and re-booking process, the 48-hour threshold, the difference between a refund and a retained fee, and what happens if you cancel after the booking deadline. Many students assume the module list can be adjusted right up to the last minute, which is the most expensive misunderstanding in this part of the application.
ESAT has five modules: Maths 1 is compulsory, plus two chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths 2; a three-module combination gives most candidates 27 multiple-choice questions and 40 minutes per module, 120 minutes in total. Every module is timed on its own and unused time does not carry forward to the next one. Candidates who end up sitting four modules face 160 minutes instead of 120.
The first step of registration is adding a test card inside your UAT-UK account, and that is where you choose the test and its modules; only then does the dashboard show a card that leads to the Pearson screens for picking a centre and paying. Module selection therefore happens inside UAT-UK, before payment, in a separate step from choosing a test centre. Anyone expecting a module editor inside the Pearson screens will search for it in vain.
UAT-UK states that modules cannot be changed without cancelling and re-booking, and the course list says the same thing in different words: module selection cannot be changed or added after booking. Swapping a module means cancelling the appointment and going through the test card and booking steps again. Rescheduling is a different operation and never alters the module combination.
Each cycle offers only five test days, namely 12 to 16 October 2026 and 4 to 8 January 2027 for 2027 entry. After a cancellation there is no guarantee of rebooking the same time or the same centre, because a new appointment depends on centre availability. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau have narrower windows still, with ESAT offered only on 12 and 13 October and on 6 January.
Candidates may register only once in an application cycle, and the October and January sittings are not a retake pair. October booking closed at 18:00 UK time on 28 September 2026, so cancelling now means giving up ESAT for this cycle. Cambridge and Oxford applicants normally must sit in October, with exceptions only for the Cambridge mature colleges that have a January deadline and the Oxford Astrophoria Foundation Year.
Cancelling or rescheduling more than 48 hours before the test carries no financial penalty, but the two outcomes differ: a cancellation refunds the fee in full, while a reschedule moves you to another seat with the fee retained. Inside the final 48 hours rescheduling closes, and a missed test means the fee is forfeited. Fees follow the location of the test centre, at 78 pounds in the UK and Ireland and 133 pounds elsewhere.
Manage Appointment
Once you are logged in, the test card carries a Manage Appointment link where cancellations and reschedules begin, and Pearson customer services can also handle this by phone. UAT-UK states that it cannot itself change or cancel an appointment, and it advises against raising reschedules through secure message because that only slows the process down. Multiple accounts count as a breach, so password problems should be solved with the recovery links rather than a fresh registration.
UAT-UK says plainly that different courses require different module combinations and that this cannot be changed at the test centre. Test centre staff check identity, issue the erasable booklet and supervise timing; they do not edit registration data. Arrive 30 minutes early with original photo identification whose name matches your account exactly, because arriving more than 15 minutes late means no entry and no refund.
Conflicts come from the compulsory lists attached to different courses, for example aeronautical engineering wanting Maths 1, Maths 2 and Physics while chemical engineering at the same university wants Maths 1, Maths 2 and Chemistry. Applying to both leaves the union of four modules as the only viable choice, with Maths 1 and Maths 2 sat once. UAT-UK answers this directly in its FAQ: you might need to sit four modules instead of three.
Where both courses carry three compulsory modules that do not align, the FAQ says you must request permission from UAT-UK to sit four; selecting all four modules on the dashboard triggers that review automatically. The ESAT page advises contacting UAT-UK through the account before booking rather than after paying. A booking submitted without that permission may be returned, which costs more time than raising the question first.
Cambridge natural sciences, veterinary medicine and chemical engineering with biotechnology allow a free choice of two modules alongside Maths 1, but where your other course carries compulsory modules the official line is that those compulsory modules dictate your selection. The free-choice course does not get a vote. Imperial design engineering is unusual in requiring only two modules, Maths 1 and Maths 2.
The course list warns that failing to register for compulsory modules may invalidate your application to that course. That is a question of eligibility rather than score, and nothing in the system stops you booking an incomplete set. The practical check is to write down the module list for every course you are applying to and compare it line by line with the selection in your account.
Three checks come before any cancellation, and they are worth doing in order. Be sure you need a different module rather than a different time, because a plain reschedule avoids the whole process; then confirm the new combination covers the compulsory lists of every course you are applying to, including any four-module case. Finally, confirm that re-booking is still possible, given that October booking has closed and January booking runs to 18:00 UK time on 21 December 2026.
